Hey everyone, hope you're having a good evening!
I suspect Red Sox fans are, at least
Let's discuss
jp

now that devers is finally extended, where do the Red Sox go from here?
Anthony Franco
6:00
That's obviously their biggest long-term move but it doesn't change the equation for 2023 at all. The roster still has the same holes it had two hours ago
6:01
Need to add an up-the-middle player of some kind. Catching help would be nice but that ship might've sailed for the offseason. Could use another starter if they can swing that via trade
Al Swearengen
6:01
Please tell me Bloom won't be trading Casas for two years of Pablo Lopez. Luzardo or Cabrera I can definitely get behind, but not a mid rotation starter with bad home/away splits.
Anthony Franco
6:03
I'd be very surprised if they traded Casas. There was a lot of attention paid to that report, which was only saying that Miami liked Casas and had tried to target him in those discussions. There was nothing to suggest the Sox were especially interested in giving him up

Today is the 14th day of my 7-day designation for assignment by the Yankees, and my mom is asking me where I shall be pitching in 2023. She suspects that I cleared waivers, and with a wink and a nod I was released and re-signed by the Yankees to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training and an early opt-out provision.  She notes that the Yankees sometimes wait until late January or early February to announce some of their minor league contracts.  Can MLBTR help ease her concerns?  I would ask some of the Yankees beat writers, but "Arson" is a bad name to apply to a guy who makes his living coming in from the bullpen.  Thanks for your help.  Sincerely, Junior.

Ha this is a funny way of framing the question, but it does get at an interesting point. A lot of guys had been in DFA limbo for longer than seven days; Mark Contreras was in limbo for a couple weeks before the Twins outrighted him yesterday
Not entirely clear on this yet but my guess is they implemented some kind of waiver freeze in the latest CBA (the full text of which still isn't publicly available) that went into effect for a week between Christmas and the New Year
6:05
So on Fernández more specifically, I don't think anything has necessarily happened yet. He'll probably hit waivers soon
Mike Trout
6:05
Do you think that Kim from the Padres would be an upgrade at SS
Anthony Franco
6:07
Definitely but I also find it hard to see San Diego actually giving him up. The Halos do have the kind of controllable starting pitching that'd probably get the Padres to think about it, but dealing someone like Sandoval or Detmers just thins out a rotation that finally looks like a strength for them
I don't think SD would find it all that persuasive if the Angels offered José Suarez
Rickey

Who's closing for Oakland this year (when and if they put a pitcher in the position to get saves)?
Anthony Franco
6:09
I lean towards Zach Jackson eventually taking it, but I'd guess they probably start with Trevor May until Jackson shows a little more consistency throwing strikes
Whitey Ford
6:09
What kind of start will Bailey Ober be this year—a #4 or #5 or something better?
Anthony Franco
6:10
He's a fourth starter for me. Probably going to be a little too homer-prone to be more than that, but a league average starter is still pretty valuable
fascinating
6:11
how does it work when a player has two contracts? Hosmer signs with the Cubs for, let's say 1 year/$5 million, while still getting his 3/39 from the Padres? I'm presuming a new contract doesn't supersede the old one, as Hos would be walking away from a ton of money. So he's just out there playing with multiple contracts from multiple teams?
Anthony Franco
6:11
When a player is released from a guaranteed deal, the previous team is just on the hook for all the money except for the league minimum salary
6:12
So the Padres are paying virtually all of it and the Cubs will pay the minimum for as long as Hosmer's on the roster. They're prevented from signing for anything more than that with the new team to prevent the kind of double-dip you suggest where a player makes out better financially because they played poorly enough to get released in the first place

Are we really holding out for othani. I keep reading rumors about it
Anthony Franco
6:13
(Dodgers)
I feel pretty confident in saying the Dodgers will make a serious run at Ohtani in free agency next year. Will they get him? I have no idea; they'll be one of the favorites but there's going to be a ton of competition
Cards fan

The Cubs are Making a LOT of medium size and small moves to address their issues. Have they made enough progress to be serious contenders for the NL Central? Or is this still St Louis's to win?
Anthony Franco
6:15
Yeah the Cubs haven't really done enough for me to consider them legitimate contenders in the NLC. They've kind of solidified their hold on third place but are still behind St. Louis and Milwaukee in my view
6:16
It's not like Bellinger's a lock to upgrade center field. They made a huge pickup at second base (by kicking Hoerner over after signing Dansby) but negate that somewhat with the downgrade at catcher. Corner infield is still pretty weak, back of the rotation is improved but behind St. Louis's and Milwaukee's
6:17
They're better than last year for sure, and I expect them to win more than 74 games. But it still feels like a roughly .500 team than a real division contender
Jason
6:17
Who is the Braves 5th starter?
Anthony Franco
6:17
I like Bryce Elder the most of the group they've got at the back end
Rally Monkey
6:18
Could you see the Angels and Rox lining up for a Marquez trade? What would entice the Rockies enough to deal him?
Anthony Franco
6:19
Don't think Colorado's dealing him, no. They're already light in the rotation as is, and it would be a weird time to sell low
Mike
6:19
What free agents or players in trades do you see the giants going after?
Anthony Franco
6:22
Heavy lifting seems mostly done, although there should probably still be room for a Will Smith type to deepen the bullpen. Another left-handed infielder with some defensive flexibility would probably be nice, although that could just be a Harold Castro type on a minor league deal
Fred dog
6:22
Who and what price came in third behind SF and NYM in the Correa bidding? Do you think the gap was big or small?
Anthony Franco
6:22
Seems like it was Minnesota at 10/285
Mike
6:22
I’m a huge Yankee fan, but live in KC and do root for the Royals. In saying that, why wouldn’t the Royals attempt to bring back Hosmer and Grienke again in the hopes to assist with their youth movement and sell tickets
Anthony Franco
6:23
Hosmer wouldn't have fit with the roster even if he hadn't already signed with the Cubs. Pasquantino and Pratto should be getting the bulk of the first base/DH reps
6:24
They could bring back Greinke, sure. Lyles and Yarbrough add some depth to the rotation but the only internal player who really solidified a spot there was Singer. Can still kick someone like Brad Keller back to the bullpen to accommodate Greinke
