Hey, how goes it everyone. Back at it after Labor Day. Let's get started.

What is the status of Malik Shepherd?   Is he back at Beaver Falls since he was ruled ineligible to play at Aliquippa?
Mike White
11:00
I'm not sure where he is. He was ruled ineligible to play at Aliquippa. He can go back to Beaver Falls if he likes, but he won't be eligible to play there.

explain the logic (if any)  behind the 3A limit on play off teams;  which Beaver Valley conference school with a winning record will stay home this year?
Mike White
11:04
It's the WPIAL's playoff system.  They want four championship games at Heinz. To do that, they have to put 3A final there. Thus, they can only have eight playoff teams in a field, with three weeks of playoffs. 3A coaches would rather have 16 teams and play an extra week of playoffs. But WPIAL is going with this system for this year again. I agree, not the best, but WPIAL decided on it for last year and they say they won't change after only one year. Go figure.

My Hurricanes let me down last Friday against Montour, that QB and running back were too much for them Montour has some talent on that team
Mike White
11:05
Montour could definitely be good. We had them top 5 at beginning of season. They should challenge for Northwest Nine championship. New Castle 0-2. Better be careful of won't make playoffs.

Is Kenny White out?  and what did the other transfer from WA do?
Mike White
11:07
Judging from  stats Friday, Kenny White did not play for Pine. Coach Kasper said last week that it was only a knee sprain and he was day to day. Then again, as saying goes, aren't we all. The other transfer from West A plays at Montour.

Love your columns and the chat ... This isnt a question more of a request , how about from now on when we talk about West Allegheny football we talk about the kids that are there busting her behinds every day to get them back in the title game , enough about the two that left , let the other towns talk about them ?    Thanks
Mike White
11:10
Well Paul, when writing about West A in previews and beginning of season how do you expect anyone to ignore that two of their best players left, including a 1,000-yard rusher? You can't just forget that and not mention it. As season goes on, you might hear about those transfers less. West A off to a nice start and I'm sure their kids are working hard. But every team's kids work hard.

Any thoughts on Clairton's performance Saturday...was it a slow start?  Is Canevin defense pretty good?  Or could Clairton be down a little this year?
Mike White
11:12
First game. I don't think Clairton might be as good as last year but they still have to be team to beat in 1A. Maybe not quite as many playmakers as past. We'll see. As for Canevin, it won't be easy, especially when four starters leave right before start of season, including probably your best player, Maleik Hemingway.

Mike, if you have not had a chance to check out TJ's sophomore QB, Shane Stump, don't miss the opp to see him play.  Stud athlete.
Mike White
11:13
Yes, BIll Cherpak touted him when he was a freshman. FIrst year starter. Coach says probably has best arm of anyone he has had.

1. I read where its first time that 2 QBs have thrown for over 400 in WPIAL. What about state? 2. P-R also had 3 WR's over 100 yards. How common is that. (If that continues for P-R, they will be even tougher to defend.)
Mike White
11:15
Hey old Quad North,  Yes it is the first time two QBs in WPIAL have thrown for over 400. Ahhhh, I wrote that. I keep records. Have no idea about state and have no idea if any team has ever had three WRs over 100 yards. But unlikely.
That No. 15 at QB is pretty good for Pine, though.

Last week I asked about NA's defense. Clearly something is up. Or, has Coach Metheny been sandbagging at BP. They won in a dominating fashion on both side of the ball. NA will recover, but are they closer to the pack than they have been in a while?
Mike White
11:16
I don't think this is one of NA's best teams. But they will still not be a slouch. Had reports from people that they lack playmakers on offense. I think Bethel Park's lines are strong. Good game this week is Central at NA. Two teams trying to find themselves a little.
11:18
Little bit of hoops talk. Rivals came out with sophomore rankings last week. Butler's Ethan Morton No. 50 in country in sophomore class. Pretty impressive. He already has some D-1 offers. Some other big time programs are interested also - and rightly so. He's 6-5 to 6-6 and is a point guard - with skill.

Is SV down this year or is Peters Twp better?
Mike White
11:19
Good question. Wondering the same thing after Peters beat Seneca. Seneca did lose a lot. Peters plays Bethel this week. We'll know a little more about Peters after this one. Seneca plays Pine. Ouch!!!
11:21
Hey big nine, don't forget about South Fayette. They would have to be considered the other favorite to make it to Heinz. But Montour is intriguing. I still wonder if West Mifflin will be good? Is Howie Reid totally healthy?
Old Quad North
11:21
With BP beating NA, Peters beating SV, and Lebo giving P-R a run for their money for a while, maybe conferences aren't as lopsided this year. Key game this week to test that idea - Penn Hills vs. Canon-Mac. Usually that's a blowout game, but maybe not this year.
Mike White
11:22
Yes, you are correct, sir. Penn Hills plays Pine next week. We'll know exactly how good Penn Hills is then.

Any idea on what's up with Neshannock? Beat Farrell (supposed to be pretty good) in week zero but lose to C.W. North Catholic in week one...or is Quaker Valley (beat North in week zero) a dark horse in Beaver Valley...
Mike White
11:26
Hey GD. Neshannock lost a lot from last year, most notably Frank The Tank. I agree that loss to CWNC was surprising. Made it hard to figure out what to do with Neshannock in rankings. Quaker Valley is 2-0 and RIcky Guss is one of the breakout players this year in WPIAL at QB. He's been terrific. But it's been North Catholic and McGuffey. Beaver, Aliquippa, Central Valley still to come. Need I say more?

On the South Fayette topic...last game of the season @ Montour.  That would be really neat to have a conf champ on the line in the last game.  South Fayette offenses seems down but their defense has been stellar (only points  so far were on a fluke 70+ yard pass play where the DB fell down).
Mike White
11:28
Agree to a certain extent. But South Fayette has all new receivers this year. And Drew Saxton did throw for 269 yards last week. So I'm not ready to say SF offense is down. Defense has been impressive, though. That conference is very good then. Not a lot of breathing room.

11:28
At this point in the season lots of teams certainly have high hopes, and many classifications seem up for grabs so to speak, but is any class as wide open as 5A?  Seems like you could argue that 6+ teams stand a chance at winning 5A right now!
Mike White
11:30
Hey WikeMwhite, love the handle. Totally agree about 5A. I think that might have been the best last year top to bottom. Again this year. For example, what to make of Armstrong, now that Zane Train has left town. But Armstrong is 2-0. Can they stay with McKeesport this week? McKeesport went from No. 1 to out of the top five.

Is Allderdice legit for challenging in the  City League this season. nice win vs Breashear last week
Mike White
11:31
Nice win for Dice. I admit I was a little surprised. Looks like JHaslett might bounce back after a down year.

Any worry on Seton Lasalle? Surprised by the score with SSA from Friday and rushing yards allowed?
Mike White
11:32
Shady Side QB hurt them apparently. Maybe best name in WPIAL?? Skyy Moore. As for Seton, offense is really good. Deanes, Banbury ... they will be fine. Question is KO pretty good again? Freshman at QB.
WikeMhite
11:34
To answer the question on 3 receivers with 100 yards receiving (and it probably has been done by others)...South Fayette vs. Seton LaSalle in Sept 2012 did it.  Brett Brumbaugh threw for 374 that night.  Zach Challingsworth (who went to Pitt) 130yds receiving, Conner Beck 100 yds receiving, and Justin Watson 125 yds receiving.  Comment on Watson - kid is a beast in the Ivy League at Penn and seems to be on a lot of NFL watch lists.
Mike White
11:35
Well there you have it. You answered the guy. You don't need me. Yes, Justin Watson has had a great career in Ivy. Probably one of the South Fayette kids who has done the best in college.
Old Quad North
11:35
Coach Rossi definitely fudged the stats with the kid with exactly 100! :-)
Mike White
11:36
Hey, careful. Joe doesn't do the stats.
