It's election day, so tell me: Who would you vote for, right now, as Player of the Year in WPIAL-City League. Not projected. Just right now. I'll hang up and wait for your answers.
Mr Ed

I think Matt Sieg is missing his calling playing DB in college. He should be quarterback for Army or Air Force. Great runner and hasn’t thrown a pass all season! That’s nuts. Do you think at this point it’s strategic by their coaches, not wanting to put anything on tape, possibly for Clairton? I say that because at least when I watched their game against Canevin a few weeks ago he was playing defense. How bad could a shoulder/arm/ hand be if he’s doing that? Guess we’ll find out in a couple weeks. Not beating Clairton if he can’t.

One problem with being a quarterback at Army or Air Force. Does the player want to be in the Army or Air Force. I agree that Matt might be worth a look at QB at some smaller FBS schools. He is certainly a talented QB, but I don't think that's his best position at schools like Penn State, Notre Dame and wherever else he might visit. As far as his throwing, coach Tanner Garry said Sieg's arm is doing better. He's thrown one pass in I think five games. But they haven't needed throwing. I'm sure there is something that why put throwing on film if they don't have to. Might not have to until the finals.

Has Scott Heinauer received any interest from schools since being fired at Mars?
Mike White
10:59
Not that I know of. But what if he went from Mars to Moon? Who on earth would make that move? It would be out of this world.

4A great games…McKeesport vs TJ, and New Castle vs Quips….Lindy Lauro smiling down on this one!
Mike White
11:05
Excellent games. I'll take McKeesport and New Castle. It would set up a rematch of the 1949 championship game when New Castle beat McKeesport 8-7. Two legendary coaches. Duke Weigle and Phil Bridenbaugh. Crowd at Pitt Stadium on Saturday was 17,731. Difference in game was safety by New Castle in second quarter.

Listened to your podcast and you picked USC - they lost two games and struggled in one (McKeesport) - common theme for all those games was athletes on the other side---How do they deal with Woodland Hills athletes because they have more than just Scoop Smith (and he is great)?
Mike White
11:07
Yes, Scoop is great. I certainly don't feel USC is a strong favorite. Woodland Hills winning would not surprise anyone. Just a hunch. But yes, stopping Scoop big plays will be key. So will USC's line play. Junior lineman Ryan Robbins has been out with a foot injury.

Hey Mike, happy “win or play” basketball season! With that said, who do you think are the top teams in 4A this year, and which teams do you think will be slept on in the classification?
Mike White
11:09
Well, official start of basketball practice is a week from Friday. Let's go!!!!! For 4A, I don't think it's real deep with top teams. I probably would put North Catholic No. 1. Excellent one-two punch in Rottmann and Fredericks. They'll score a lot D-3 players in college. Plus, they added a talented freshman guard in Pickett. A couple football players will also help. Quaker Valley will definitely be in the mix. I guess Deer Lakes is still worth watching. Maybe Central Valley also?

Mike- Some good matchups this weekend.  Before I complete my weekly pickem, do you have any upset predictions?
Mike White
11:09
Ahhhhh, not really.

Bye week really helped some teams get healthy I think. How about that kid from norwin who had a blood clot. Pretty crazy. What game will you be covering this week?
Mike White
11:09
I'll be at Norwin and North Allegheny.

What are your thoughts on Aliquippa-New Castle being played at Ellwood City? Not a huge stadium for the expected crowd, and the parking situation is terrible there.
Mike White
11:11
Yeah, that is a little bit of a head scratcher. But I guess there aren't a lot of stadiums in between. I wondered about Seneca Valley? Of course, what people don't realize with a lot of these things is you don't know what stadiums are available or want to host the game.

My projected vote for WPIAL Player of the Year will be Montour’s 7 foot basketball player.
Mike White
11:12
You're hilarious. He is eligible, though.
Why bother ?
11:12
USC shouldn't even bother showing up Friday. They will lose 96-0. They aren't that good. Hellmens or whatever his name is isn't very good. They are a bunch of soft rich kids who can't play sports.
Mike White
11:12
You're hilarious.

11:12
Chartiers Valley proved they didn't belong in the postseason. WPIALs made a mistake picking them for the wild card.
Mike White
11:13
Totally disagree. I'm not saying they're good, but name me one team you would put in ahead of them? West Allegheny? Sorry. Char Valley beat West A in head to head.

Had a lot of time on my hands last weekend. Any suggestions on what my teammates and I should do this weekend ?

If PCC wins the state title, are they up there with Pine Richland and Mt. Lebanon, or is the Lasalle loss a legacy changer?
Mike White
11:15
Not going there yet. Winning state title won't be easy. Do you know Harrisburg is really, really good. And there is still La Salle. They just beat St. Joe's for second time this season.
Mr Ed
11:15
One thing about being a high school coach, unlike pro or college, who can bring in a lot of new personnel each year, you can see what’s in the talent pipeline going back to junior high level, and know”uh oh, we’re in trouble these next few years”. Seems just coincidental I’m sure that quite often a coach who leaves job for “personal reasons” at a successful program only to see it go 2-8, 1-9 next couple years, no?
Mike White
11:16
I think some coaches who leave for personal or family reasons, it is sometimes legit. But you are also right. You see a coach leave for "personal reasons." And you know it's, "personally, I think we're going to stink."
11:21
Oh, getting back to the top 4A teams in boys basketball. There is still Knoch. If everyone would've come back, they might have been the No. 1 team. But Bauman brothers transferred to Moon and 7-footer Zane Pacek is not playing this year. Concentrating on baseball. He's committed to Central Michigan for baseball. Teegan Finucan is back and Derek Lang is back to give some size. But Lang was out this fall with a knee injury.

Mr. Ed is right. Except for non boundary schools, like central and pine richland
Mike White
11:22
Mr. Ed and Kenny The Horse are cousins. I ran into them the other day and asked them, "Hey, why the long faces?"
Rules Matter
11:22
Then some coaches in the WPIAL will never retire - they just get their agents to bring in transfer from 7v7 teams.
Mike White
11:22
Hey, that doesn't happen with 7 on 7, does it?
11:24
No answers on who the player of the year should be right now?????

11:26
Saw your playoff prediction/recap video yesterday and your talk about the turnarounds this year.  It's good to see a team from Fayette County being represented in the playoffs in Frazier.  They might be one of the only teams in the area that aren't operating independently.
Mike White
11:31
Yes, Frazier was 2-8 last year, 1-9, 1-9, 0-9. Hadn't been to playoffs since 2017. If they could beat Canevin, they'd be in semis for only the fourth time. Last time was 2013. Before that, 1983. But hey, a question. Frazier is the Commodores. Shouldn't Lionel Richie be their GM? These Commodores go "All Night Long." Sorry, showing my age.

Player of the Year: James Armstrong at Hopewell. Great numbers and revived a program.
Mike White
11:32
No. Not that he's not very good. And if he would get Hopewell to the finals, maybe. But he didn't do enough against the really good teams.
