What's going on? Greetings and let's go. Fire away with any questions or comments. Best hour of your week, isn't it?
10:59
Two weeks of WPIAL season are complete. Don't blink. Season will be over. Only five weeks left.
‘T’ from Green Tree

The receiver from Keystone Oaks led  all receivers with 11 catches. Do you think he can play at a small college?
Mike White
11:01
You're talking about Mark Hutchin. We actually had him with 12 catches. He led the team in receptions last season, so obviously has some talent. That KO offense is good for receivers. Honestly, I don't know much about him. Have never seen him. But I would imagine he could play small college. Many WPIAL players do.

I saw that the West Greene-California was postponed on Friday. Do you know why?
Mike White
11:01
West Greene COVID case. Not sure if it involved football team or not. But team was shut down.

Mike, Gateway-Pine feels like one of the best regular season matchups in a long time. With so much talent at skill positions and offensive systems designed to maximize it, do you look for a Big 12 40 something to 30 something game?  What do you think perhaps might be overlooked key to the game for one team or the other?
Mike White
11:05
I agree with you. Shapes up as a terrific matchup. One of three 1 vs. 2 matchups Friday. I don't remember that happening very often. I saw Pine last week. They are very good. I know Gateway is very good. Truthfully, I think game will be won up front. I'm very impressed with Pine-Richland linemen, especially defensively. And their linebackers. DE Miguel Jackson is very good. I think he's better than Liberty level, which is where he's going. Another key is whether Derrick Davis can get a few big plays. But I'll take Pine - and I think Pine will score good amount of points on just about anybody.

I forgot to add I enjoy listening to the weekly podcast you guys do. Half hour of high school football talk always takes me back to those times when I was young or my kids were playing. Good for the soul in these times.
Mike White
11:07
Well thanks Zman. It's something different. It has gotten a pretty good response so far. Don't know yet if we will bring back This Week In High School Sports video this year. That's up in the air. But hey, podcast is sponsored, so we have to like that, right? We're not quite Ernie, Chuck, Kenny and Shaq on Inside the NBA, but maybe we can give insight - and entertain. That Brad Everett character is tough to control, though.

How about those Big Macs?!?!  Are we that good?  Or is Lebo that bad?  I know it was their first game but we came off a whopping from Central and being down 17-0 in the third, those boys could have easily thrown in the towel.  But they played hard and won it at the end.  Best win by Canon Mac football since...
Mike White
11:09
Great win for Canon-Mac. I think Mike Evans has done a very good job there. Good guy. I don't think they're ready to win a WPIAL championship but they have gotten better and better under him. First win over Lebo in 12 years. I don't know all of Canon-Mac history off top of my head, but maybe best win since that 2004 team that went 8-3 and finished second to Thomas Jefferson in conference.

Mike- KO seems to have a pretty good tough QB, have you had a chance to see him play?
Mike White
11:10
Nope. Just highlights. But wrote a story on Logan Shrubb for later this week. About to become only 5th QB to have 5,000 yards passing and 2,000 rushing. By end of season, he could become only second to have 5,000 and 3,000. Just a really good high school QB. Not a Div. 1 college kid. But so what. Another good QB developed by coach Perry.

Your best guess--will we have more than 25 people in a gym during hoop season? Will cooler political heads prevail?
Mike White
11:14
Yes, without a doubt.
11:15
I think you'll see more than 25 at girls volleyball games now. Schools are starting to do what they want -- and do what they think if safe. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope we do have hoops, though. Hope cases don't spike.

Favorite month of the year to cover HS sports?
Mike White
11:16
February and March high school basketball playoffs.
Ryan
11:16
hey Mike what do you think about the Kiski team lead by Kenneth Blake and Logan Johnson and Calvin Heinle last night they won by one point
Mike White
11:17
Kiski might be pretty decent. They're in a conference where they can have some success. Win last night was 36-35 over Connellsville. But  let's take it easy, Ryan. It was Connellsville, remember?

Big TJ BV game this week.  Who ya got?
Mike White
11:19
Until TJ loses, I'm not betting against them. No way TJ is as good as last year but they are obviously good again. I saw Belle Vernon Week 1. Defense very impressive. Whitlock is a problem for defenses with his running. But can BV throw with consistent success? I see they have another QB they also use.

Why no love in the rankings for CV ? Knocking off two legit teams. Is this finally, finally the year ?
Mike White
11:21
C'mon, man. I just did a story on them in Monday's paper - also on our web site. Guess that's not enough. No, they're not ranked. But no one ranked in 4A lost last week. We didn't have South Fayette ranked in 5A, either.
Who are we ? USC
11:21
Is David Pantelis ok ? I know he didn't play 2nd half
Mike White
11:22
Not sure. Haven't heard update. Heard it was an ankle injury. USC also played Pine game without their second leading receiver. But think of it. Pantelis was hurt right at the end of first half. USC had only one TD with him in game. Pine was definitely the better team.

What's up with high schoolers transferring like college players.  Sounds like Central gained a WT basketball player and lost one (to PR) since last season. Is this a Central thing or a WPIAL issue?
Mike White
11:25
Where have you been, living in a cave? It's been well documented for a long time about the increase in the number of transfers. Central got two transfers eligible this year - one from Winchester Thurston and one from Freeport. And WPIAL made them eligible for playoffs. You know Central has had transfers before, but more in football. But it's a Catholic private school. You're going to have transfers. Central did have a basketball player transfer out, though. Jameson O'Toole to Pine-Richland.

After two weeks, do you think Butler is regretting leaving the WPIAL for football.  It looks like they have not faired much better with their "plan B."
Mike White
11:26
No. The COVID-19 thing messed with Butler a lot. They had a schedule ready with a number of teams and they thought they could be more competitive. But because of COVID, District 10 changed all of their schedules. So Butler has to play Erie Prep, McDowell and Erie High twice each. Not good for Butler. But it wasn't planned this way.

North Hills was shut out.  I obviously couldn't go to the game but I heard they had a hard time moving the ball.  Is the run heavy offense outdated or do they just lack the talent on that side of the ball?
Mike White
11:28
There are teams that still rely heavily on the run. North Hills is one. Keep in mind that Moon defense was very good last year, too, and Moon shut out North Hills. I haven't seen much of North Hills past few years. What I have seen, though, is that Indians really haven't had a good thrower at QB.
Who are we ? USC
11:29
Was the USC/ Latrobe game always on the schedule ? They said in the broadcast last week they were playing Penn Hills. Is it a Covid thing ?
Mike White
11:30
I have no idea what was said on broadcast. Yes, USC was going to play Penn Hills. But Penn Hills is now playing Kiski. Remember, Kiski had to move schedule around because they were shut down some because of COVID. With these postponements and rescheduled games, it's like domino effect. Rescheduling one causes another one to be changed.
11:33
Anyone see the Freedom football situation last week? Supposedly, players had a vote whether to keep or get rid of coach. All I can say is wow!
Jerri Lippert
11:34
i hear the best way to condition new footballs is with barbasol a hair dryer and some mud. We’ve cornered the market on it in the wpial!
Mike White
11:35
Sure. Thanks for the contribution. Really appreciate it.

11:36
Have you heard anything about rescheduled coVid football games this season in the WPIAL?  The Big Macs lost their game this Friday to contract tracing of a Baldwin coach....whatever that means.  Rumors are 4 teams will make the 6A playoffs and C Mac and Baldwin may need to play to see who gets the 4th spot.  If you haven't heard anything on this...What would Mike White do if he were commish of the WPIAL?
Mike White
11:39
Nothing has been decided yet on what will happen to postponed games. 6A could be a mess. There aren't rumors that four teams will make the playoffs in 6A. That's a definite. WPIAL has two playoff plans ready. One is if there are PIAA playoffs. One is if there are no PIAA playoffs. Either way, 6A has four teams that will qualify. WPIAL football committee will meet early October and decide what to do. This could be a real problem. Baldwin now has three conference games to make up. No way they want to play four games in 14 day period. What will WPIAL do? Not sure. What would I do? I think you might have to call some forfeits. Some have said decide playoff spot by winning percentage. That's not fair because teams didn't play same opponents. WPIAL could have a real mess on its hands.
