Hey, basketball season is over. Spring sports are here. Let's get right to it.

Mike - just for fun, who wins if Peters Township girls basketball plays Chartiers Valley girls basketball ?
Mike White
11:02
It would be a great one, wouldn't it? Someone mentioned to me last week that the teams should do it. But it's not allowed. Not allowed under PIAA rules. Not allowed to play games outside of the season. But Char Valley coach Tim McConnell said they did scrimmage. Scrimmages are much different than games. But I think he said both teams won two quarters.

Any front runners for the CCHS basketball coaching position?
Mike White
11:02
Buddy Valinsky and Dan Marino.

Mike, perhaps petition the WPIAL basketball committee, one more game for all the western Pa. marbles, Peters vs. Chartiers Valley.  LOL.  Who wins?
Mike White
11:04
As said before, it's not allowed. That's a great question as to who wins. If you tie me up, hold me down and make me choose, I'll go with .... Man, that's a tough one. OK, I'll pick Peters by one.

The theme of the boys 6-A title game was "Big Blocks."  Oscar had three great blocks to permit Kennedy to win.  But how about that block by 6'1" Pennridge guard Sean Yoder on Oscar near the end of the game.  Kid has hops.  Have you ever seen a better little man big man block in HS?
Mike White
11:05
It was impressive and eye-opening. I don't think many have blocked Oscar. I think he was maybe trying to dunk. Yoder kid really impressive. Going to Navy.

How is 6A baseball looking this year?
Mike White
11:06
Our rankings come out in Friday Varsity Xtra section. Will be on line Wednesday or Thursday. Without giving away rankings, top 5 in no order are Hempfield, Bethel Park, Canon-Mac, Pine-RIchland and NA.

Why does it appear the PG is ignoring Kennedy Catholic’s most recent basketball title? I saw stories in every other Western PA champ, but in KC’s case just a box score. What gives?
Mike White
11:09
C'mon, man. Easy explanation. Kennedy Catholic is not in the WPIAL. We have to cut off coverage somewhere. There are over 120 schools in WPIAL. We cut it off there. We covered Kennedy when they played WPIAL schools in playoffs - and I had a few graphs in paper in Monday story. We don't even send papers to Kennedy area. On top of that, I have done a few Kennedy and Oscar stories. So please stop with the we have ignored them. A lot of people against them wish we would ignore them totally.

How about that second half by Moon's Connor Ryan, Johnson got the offer from Arizona, but hopefully the Ryan twins will be playing at D2 school too.
Mike White
11:10
Looking like D III for Ryans. But I love them as high school players. Johnson way far away from a decision.

What was your favorite game of the weekend and why?
Mike White
11:11
Moon vs. Archbishop Wood. It was close. Both teams played well. Both well coached. Good drama. But overall, I thought games were pretty good this year.

Fab 5 boys looks like two locks, from Butler and Moon.  How many others do you think have a shot at the other 3 spots?
Mike White
11:12
About 10. I think hardest year ever for Fab 5 after an obvious choice. It will come out Sunday, April 7. Working on wonderful picture theme ideas now.

Mike will there be a move to hold a separate state tournament for private schools? Should there be?
Mike White
11:14
Yes, there is a call for action from many schools. A state legislator also is calling for it. But this subject has been written about 10,000 times in the past year or two. 5 of 6 boys champs were either Catholic or charter this year. That stokes the fire. But as I said before and will say again after talking briefly to PIAA bosses this week. I don't care what schools want or principals want or fans want. PIAA has no interest in separate tournaments unless state legislature forces them.

Connor Ryan's performance for Moon was incredible! He was so determined!  Does it rank as one of the best performances by a Western PA player in a state championship game?
Mike White
11:15
Yes, it was impressive. But easy, now. Ever in a state championship game by a player???? That's pretty strong. He did score 24 in one half. That is pretty impressive.

11:16
Which potential mergers would you most want to see for athletics?  Char Val-S Fayette-Carlynton,  N Hills-Avonworth,  Aliquippa-Hopewell, Calirton-TJ?
Mike White
11:16
No interest in discussing this. Mergers aren't supposed to be for athletics, anyway.
Tony
11:16
When can we expect boys volleyball preview?  Thoughts on the season?
Mike White
11:18
My thoughts? Well, can you dig it? I'll go out on a limb and predict North Allegheny will probably be pretty good. ... Preview in Friday's Varsity Xtra.

Any word on the story from a few months back about going back to 4 classifications in football/basketball?
Mike White
11:19
PIAA boss Bob Lombardi said PIAA didn't even discuss at last week's meeting. If WPIAL wanted to do it, they would have to come up with a system on their own.

Will Connor Ryan's performance against Archbishop Wood open any doors for him at the college level?
Mike White
11:19
Like I said before, Ryans are being looked at by D-3 schools.

Hey Mike,  I was under the impression that one of the stipulations with the new transfer formula that was passed last summer was a transfer database that was to be made public to everyone.  Was I imagining that?  We are almost a year removed and I have not heard or seen any mention of this since the summer.
Mike White
11:19
There is supposed to be a database but it is not public. I have not seen it, either.
Tony
11:20
Where will Johnson from Moon transfer to next season?  Him and his bro change teams like I change socks.
Mike White
11:21
Have no idea. Moon loses four starters. I would never rule out First Love as a possibility.
Jimmy Chitwood
11:21
I think Senior leadership really shined for Moon on Friday, but what can you say about those Sophmores from Arch Wood?  Those kids are going to be phenomenal.
Mike White
11:22
Yes, you will probably hear plenty from Wood in next two years. Three sophomore starters.
slagpile66
11:22
In view of the furor (which is dumb I believe) over Tom Izzo, do you think there will be more scrutiny of HS coaches behavior.  Coach Tim M. can really bring it for example.
Mike White
11:23
There is enough scrutiny now. As for Tim McConnell, he's not the same as he was with boys. He's not a coach for everyone. But the guy is one of the best coaches in the history of Western Pa. in any sport. And after being around the girls team and in the locker room before, at half and after the game, those girls really seem to like him.

Any chance New Castle moves up or down in classification in the next cycle?
