Hello, folks.
4:12
I have a headache and I'm seeing weird colors in my peripheral vision. Perhaps the perfect mindset to chat about the Mets.

will Soto be A met
Darragh McDonald
4:12
In 2025? Sure, I can see it.
4:13
I don't think the Padres move him now and I wouldn't peg the Mets as the favorite even if they did. But as a free agent, it's possible.

With a bunch of holes in the OF, do you think the Mets will make any deals with any of their IF depth to acquire help in the corners, or will it be more of them trying their IF prospects in the OF, which never seems to work.
Darragh McDonald
4:13
I can definitely see them adding to the outfield, but I would assume they just spend money on FAs instead of trades.

Why don’t we use Joey Lucchesi more?  He’s been effective in spot appearances
Darragh McDonald
4:15
He had a 2.89 ERA but only struck out 16.4% of hitters. FIP was 4.22 and SIERA was 5.15. He might not have been able to sustain it. His Triple-A ERA was 4.74.

Both the Japanese two way superstar Otani and Juan Soto have been linked to the Mets, but it would cost around a billion dollars to sign those two players, is it possible or is such spending so obscene that it can easily be ruled out !
Darragh McDonald
4:16
It's hard to rule out anything with Cohen. He went to unprecedented levels this year. Would have been even higher if the Correa deal went through.
But I wouldn't peg them as the favorite for Ohtani.
LETS GO METS

Thanks for taking my question.  Who do you thing Steve Cohen should spend his money on in free agency.  Should he key into hitting or pitching and then who would he fill in the team from the trade market.  Thank you
Darragh McDonald

It's hard to know exactly what the plan is, but if this is a sort of transition year, it makes sense to go for short-term deals.
If the team plays well, cool. If not, you can trade them.
4:18
Ryu, Maeda, Montas, Severino are some of many options for the rotation.
Grabbing an outfielder or two makes sense, depending on Starling's groin.

No chance Mets trade for Soto right? Makes no sense with the sustained success through farm system mantra
Darragh McDonald
4:19
Yeah, I don't see it. They've put such a focus on adding to the farm. It would be weird to suddenly give up top talent for one year of Soto.

Jose Quintana on the trade block?
Darragh McDonald
4:20
It makes some sense since he's an impending free agent but they need someone to eat innings. I would guess they hang on and maybe put him on the block at the deadline.

I think the Mets need to trade Alonso this offseason. He seems to be trending into the Ryan Howard territory of being a power bat and not much else, and Alonso is R/R so he won’t even have the platoon advantage, making him even riskier. Agree?
Darragh McDonald
4:22
From a cold-hearted asset management point of view, I think trading Alonso makes sense. He'd bring back a good haul and extending a first base-only guy doesn't usually work out in the long term. But he seems to be a popular clubhouse guy and likes New York, so there might be intangible stuff there I can't really measure.

Will the injured list investigation lead to an end akin to the Braves/Copalella fiasco?
Darragh McDonald
4:23
I would be shocked if it's that serious. I'm surprised it's even got this far. Every team has phantom IL stints. Unless some bombshell revelations come out, I would guess nothing really comes of it.

Is this really a 1 season turn-around? How much pressure is there on Stearns to do as such?
Darragh McDonald
4:23
I feel he'll have some leeway. Doesn't seem like the club is coming into 2024 with the same expectations as 2023.

Who’s in this rotation next year? How is the Yamamoto sweepstakes / contract shaping up?
Darragh McDonald
4:25
Mentioned this in the outlook but I think Yamamoto could be a target even if 2024 is a sort of reset year. He's way younger than most FAs and it would make sense to sign him when you have the chance. But other clubs will feel the same.

With the Mets attempt to go forward with two aging Hall of Fame pitchers a failure, what do you think about the possibility of the Mets trying to put together a super bullpen this offseason - bringing back David Robertson and pursuing Josh Hader to pair with a returning Edwin Diaz?
Darragh McDonald
4:26
I don't see Hader but Robertson would be fine. Given his age, it would just be a one-year deal.

Who is DHing next year?

DJ Stewart?

What do you think is the Mets offseason plan?
Darragh McDonald
4:27
This is the big unanswered question right now. It sort of seems like they're taking a step back relative to 2023. But what does a step back look like under Cohen? Dipping under the luxury tax and selling off key pieces? Or just adding $20MM salaries instead of $43MM salaries?
4:28
My guess is that they want to see how their young talent develops, so they will leave room for Baty, Mauricio, Vientos, Acuna, etc. Then they'll go for it more in 2025.

Would it make sense to lock Alvarez up long term, and if so what would a contract look like? The practice of locking up young organizational pieces seems to be working well for the Braves
Darragh McDonald
4:30
I liked Alvarez a lot this year so I could see an extension, sure. But he's so young that he's on track for free agency after his age-26 season. His reps should be setting a high asking price.

I believe so, yes.
