Mets Offseason In Review Chat

Welcome, everyone. There's already some questions in the queue so let's dive in and talk about those Mets.

I’m sure I won’t be the first or last person to ask this, but it looks like Baty is gonna get the starting 3B job. That means the bench is a bit overflowed with Nido taking a spot, Escobar, Guillorme, Pham, Ruf and Vientos all in spots to make the roster. No Met fan wants to see Ruf there, but Vientos has options. What’s the right call?
Darragh McDonald
11:01
I wouldn't be surprised if they kept Baty and Vientos in the minors to start the season if everyone's healthy. Injuries are sure to pop up at some point.
11:02
That being said, the commitment to Ruf is modest. 3MM this year and a 3.5MM club option for 2024. They already showed with McCann they're willing to just punt a guy they don't want anymore.

Do you think Ruf has anything left? I'm thinking he's been hurting ever since he came over from SF.
Darragh McDonald
11:03
Speaking of Ruf...
11:04
I don't see why he can't get back on track. His BABIP went from .272 with the Giants to .208 with the Mets.
LFGM!

With Senga hurting his finger and Quintana out til July (or more!) do the Mets sit back and hope the reserves step up or is there a move to be made (albeit it would probably be a panic response to early injuries!)
Darragh McDonald
11:06
I'm not sure there's a move to be made that really moves the needle much.
11:07
At this point, is someone like Chris Archer or Dylan Bundy more attractive than Peterson or Megill? I don't think so.
They could always try to swing a trade, but there aren't many teams looking to give up their own pitching depth right now. The Brewers once looked like a team that had a surplus but they have their own injury concerns now.
69 mets forever

What is the mets best roster/non-roster option in cf if Nimmo goes down for an extended period?  I dont think stressing Marte for 30 plus games is the answer and Canha and Pham dont fit.  Thanks
Darragh McDonald
11:09
Yeah, that's a good question. Marte or Canha could maybe hack it for a few games but if Nimmo is out for a while, you might be looking at Tim Locastro coming up.

Who do you think will be taking on Quintana's spot in the rotation?
Darragh McDonald
11:10
I would guess Peterson. He was pretty good last year.

Mets fans are drooling with the possibility of acquiring Ohtani, but wouldn’t they be better off going after Max Fried and weakening the Braves with an eye on Soto in 2 years?
Darragh McDonald
11:11
Fried is also two years from free agency, just like Soto.
Jeff in Jersey
11:12
The Mets are tied with the Braves at the trading deadline this coming July. Using your crystal ball, the Mets are trying to acquire.....
Darragh McDonald
11:12
Starting pitching.
11:13
An obvious candidate would be someone like Matthew Boyd or Jordan Lyles, but a wilder scenario would be a Lucas Giolito or a Chris Sale.
Depends who's selling.

Been at camp for 2 weeks, there’s ALIT of “side work” goin on with Senga. Concerned???
Darragh McDonald
11:13
Well, he has a finger injury, but Showalter said he would have pitched through it during the season. They're just taking it easy because it's early.
And the Season's Over
11:14
How do you honestly see the division panning out this year? Everyone but the Nationals made decent moves to stay competitive.
Darragh McDonald
11:15
I think the Marlins are clearly the fourth-best team. As for the top three, I would guess they are neck-and-neck all year.

Should the Mets look to sign a Dylan Bundy or similar type to a minors deal?Peterson is ok but beyond that their sp depth is sketchy
Darragh McDonald
11:15
Sure, but I would guess that all 30 teams would probably like to have Bundy on a minor league deal.
11:16
It depends if he is willing to do it and, if so, does he want to do it with the Mets? Or would he rather go to a team like the Nats where his chances of making the club are higher?

Who will win the final 3 bullpen spots?  Meaning, after Diaz, Robertson, Ottaviano, Raley, and Smith.
Darragh McDonald
11:17
John Curtiss probably has one. Nogosek is out of options.
Elieser could be a long man but he also has an option.
11:18
McFarland would make sense as a second lefty.
Barbarino
11:19
I'm certainly not discounting how good the Mets can be, but the bottom part of their lineup has potential for some trouble...Canha, Vogelbach, Escobar, Navarez. That group is just as likely to be bad as good. Of course Baty and Alvarez could dramatically change that situation.
Darragh McDonald
11:19
I think they'll be fine. As you mentioned, they have depth options there and could pivot if it's really bad.
The Guy Next Door
11:20
Call me crazy, but I believe this to be a 3rd place team. They're too old and fragile. They'll fall apart down the streth in August or September. Any thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
11:21
I don't think I'd call them a third-place team. The roster is fairly similar to the one that won 101 games last year.
11:22
There's certainly some concern with the rotation but they depth they have there is decent.
Herman
11:22
Likelihood that Escobar is a trade chip at the deadline?
Darragh McDonald
11:23
If Baty is doing well, sure, I can see that. Do a mix of buying and selling.
