Hello, Fish heads. Let's get roly poly in here.

Your thoughts on Edwin Cabrera next year, and his ceiling. Thank you
Darragh McDonald
4:12
Well, his ceiling is tremendous. Throws gas, gets strikeouts and grounders like crazy.
The problem is he has no idea where the ball is going.
He's out of options next year so it might be time to trade him or move him to the bullpen. Unless their confident he can have better control next year.

Think we see another Marlins Twins trade with a SP for Brooks Lee, Marlins need a SS and don't see Royce being available
Darragh McDonald
4:13
I don't really see Lee being available either.
4:14
Some theoretical shortstop trade candidates are Ha-Seong Kim, Willy Adames, Vaughn Grissom, Geraldo Perdomo, Noelvi Marte, Tommy Edman.

4:14
Think they target Kim from Padres, or who else could you see them trading for?
Darragh McDonald
4:14
Yeah, Kim is an option. The tricky thing is that Machado is having elbow surgery and the Padres plan on having Kim cover third until Machado is ready.

What options do you see for the Marlins to upgrade the Catcher position?
Darragh McDonald
4:15
Signing Gary Sanchez would be one option. Mitch Garver or Tom Murphy are also available, though it would be tough to rely on them to be a primary catcher since they are both injured a lot. They would be more like DHs that catch on occasion.
4:16
On the trade market, Ivan Herrera, Joey Bart, Kyle Higashioka.

If Bell and Soler both opt out as expected, who could the Fish target as replacements?
Darragh McDonald
4:17
First base free agency isn't great. There's a couple of guys but they are probably better fits to split time between first and DH.
Rhys Hoskins is coming off missing all of 2023.
Brandon Belt, Carlos Santana and Justin Turner are older guys who shouldn't be in the field every day.
Rowdy Tellez and Dominic Smith could be non-tendered.

What offensive pieces do you see the Marlins acquiring even if Bell opts in? SS, C, OF/DH seem like their biggest needs…
Darragh McDonald
4:18
Yeah, I agree. It's weird to be saying this about a team that just made the playoffs, but there's quite a few holes.
4:19
Catcher, shortstop, first base. Though if Bell stays, first is fine.
Another bat-first corner outfielder who plays DH most of the time, like Soler, would fit.

4:19
Do you think we can get Salvador Perez from the Royals as our catcher?
Darragh McDonald
4:20
Well, it seems the Royals are open to moving him a little. But he has 10-and-5 rights, meaning he has full no-trade protection.
4:21
So, he would have to want to be a Marlin. Maybe he does. I don't know. But it's a potential roadblock.
He's also about to turn 34 and is coming off a rough year. Not sure the Marlins should target him anyway.
Chris
4:23
Do you think the Marlins could preempt Josh Bell’s opt-out by giving him something in say the 3/30ish range? Seems like it would be a win-win, since the Marlins would lower their payroll commitment for this year, and Bell would lock in more guaranteed money, even if he earns less this year.
Darragh McDonald
4:23
I could see this, sure.

What, in your opinion, makes it tough for the Florida MLB teams to attract fans?  I know the Marlins haven't had the greatest track record but their Florida counterparts the Rays have...and when both teams are winning they aren't filling out stadiums.  Both teams have been around long enough to have locally born fans but they aren't showing up even as the teams are performing well.
Darragh McDonald
4:23
Well, with Tampa, it seems like the stadium location is an issue.
4:24
It's in St. Pete's and hard to get to.
The Marlins, I would guess it's more that they haven't been good very often, but I don't know for sure.

I asked in the Cubs chat but my question was passed over (maybe it wasn't strong enough or wasn't good enough)...the Marlins have good young arms but need bats...Cubs have MiLB bats but can always use a couple extra arms...is there a match?
Darragh McDonald
4:25
We get a great deal of questions in these things so please don't take it personally if yours doesn't get chosen!
4:26
The Marlins' pitching surplus isn't what it once was. They traded Lopez and Eder. Now Alcantara is having Tommy John.
They could still move someone but it might be more a flawed-but-intriguing pitcher like Cabrera, as opposed to a slam-dunk upgrade like Lopez.

With Bell possibly leaving, do you think the Marlins might consider moving Chisholm back to 2nd, and move Arraez to 1st?  Would that open a hole in CF that no one on the current roster would fill adequately?
Darragh McDonald
4:27
I can see it on paper but you probably don't want to tinker with Chisholm too much. Hard for him to get in a good groove is he's changing spots every couple of years.

Would the Cards trade  Herrea and Edman to the Fish for Garrett and a prospect?
Darragh McDonald
4:30
I can see that framework, sure. Depends on the other pieces but it fits the needs of both clubs.
