Marlins offseason chat

Hi there everyone, let's start things off!
J-ROD SHOW

Marlins a potential surprise Wild Card contender if the offense isn’t awful and pitching avoids injuries? I can see a NL East 3rd place type finish of mid 80’s win if you squint enough.
Mark P
9:03
A lot of things would have to go right for Miami to reach the playoffs, but stranger things have happened.  Both the Marlins would have to improve and at least one of the other NL contenders on paper would have to fall off.

I see Arraez as a plus for the Fish but I know some are not that impressed because of his defensive woes and lack of foot speed. I love his contact ability tho. What says Marky Mark?
Mark P
9:04
The issue with Arraez at second base isn't just his defense, it's whether or not playing a tougher position will lead to injuries.  I like what Arraez brings to the Marlins overall, but I'd be more entirely sold on the move if he was playing first base.

If either or both of Soler and Garcia underperform to last year’s level (or worse), what are the odds the Marlins release them before the year’s end? It’d be considerable dead money, but I can’t think of a worse situation for a small-market, .500 club (at best) to have 2/3 of their outfield covered by aging, expensive veterans.
Mark P
9:06
Soler's contract runs through 2024 and Garcia's through 2025.  So Soler is the better bet to be cut loose in the event of a poor season, since Garcia at least brings some defensive utility.

That said, if Miami is paying them anyway, it can't be ruled out that if both struggle in 2023, they'd run it back with both players again in 2024, just in more limited playing time

Pablo was always going to get moved, but the return being Arraez couldn't have been plan A. What other names were the Marlins sniffing around on?
Mark P
9:08
Triston Casas, Brett Baty, and Brendan Rodgers were a few of the specific names linked to Miami in trade talks, so it was clear that the Marlins were prioritizing controllable young bats if they were going to move one of their controllable arms.

Better Cuban Marlin prospect Victor Mesa or Victor Victor Mesa?
Mark P
9:10
Victor Victor's stock has fallen off tremendously, so Lone Victor looks like the better bet to reach the majors

How do you see Bryan De La Cruz faring this season. He ended last season pretty hot. But is there room for him?
Mark P
9:12
If anything, BDLC seems like he might end up getting the bulk of left field playing time, even though Jesus Sanchez has the left-handed side of the platoon.  De La Cruz seems to have more promise, and I can see him being at least a decent everyday player

John Berti led the majors  in steals last year with 41. With the new rules and the manager saying he will pinch run often how many steals do you think he can get this season?
Mark P
9:14
Cracking the 50-steal barrier definitely seems possible, even with playing time maybe still a bit limited for Berti

Trivia time: who holds the Marlins record for steals in a season?
WPB
9:14
The Marlins always seem to have a good number of pitchers in the pipeline. Are they doing something very different from other teams?
Mark P
9:15
This is the frustration for the Marlins and their fans....as good as the team has been at developing pitching, they've been on the opposite end when it comes to developing hitters.

Who do you think will be picking up the most saves this season?

Will Floro be the closer until the trade deadline?
Mark P
9:17
My guess is that Puk will ultimately end up leading the team in saves, since Floro might not be a lock for the ninth inning even prior to the deadline.

Assuming a good season for Floro, he'll definitely be a trade chip if Miami isn't in contention.  As a Toronto fan, I half expect Floro to be a Blue Jay given how many Marlins/Jays reliever trades there have been over the last couple of years

9:17
Juan Pierre? That feels to obvious
Mark P
9:18
Sometimes the obvious guess is obvious for a reason.  Pierre is indeed the answer, with 65 stolen bases in 2003
Kim Ng
9:18
Is there any path for my club to get above 4th place in the next 5 years with 3 deep pocket clubs ahead of me?
Mark P
9:19
Sure there is.  Five years is a very long time in baseball.
Santos Bonacci
9:19
Do you think Miami might lineup with Oakland on a Pache trade? CF insurance for Jazz?
Mark P
9:20
A pure defense-first player might be useful, but then who do you squeeze off the active roster to make room for Pache?
Trades
9:21
Fish have young pitching but no young bats. Cards have young bats but no young pitching. What trade should they make?
Mark P
9:23
I paused there for a moment for any STL fans to stop gritting their teeth remembering the Marcell Ozuna trade.

Anyway, it does seem like the Cards have a surplus in young position players, to the point that a trade might be necessary to open up more playing time for everyone. However, I kind of think the Marlins might be done moving pitching for the time being, since unloading Lopez was no small move.
9:24
Maybe a low-level arm in a smaller trade, but not the kind of higher-tier prospect or pitcher from the big league staff

How soon until EuryPerez is called up to help the rotation? His talent specisl and I could see him up by June.
Mark P
9:26
June seems optimistic since Perez has yet to even make his Triple-A debut.  Some point in August seems more plausible for Perez's MLB arrival date
Hoskins
9:26
Way too early to predict the 2024 free agent class, but Hoskins would be a nice fit at 1B.
Mark P
9:27
Assuming his knee is ok, sure

Miami seems to be in a continuous rebuild. Is it bad strategy or bad luck or incompetence or lack of support from owners.
Mark P
9:29
As noted, the lack of hitter development is a setback for a team in "continuous rebuild," which isn't a bad way of describing the Marlins' plight.

The new ownership was supposed to start turning things around, and that just hasn't really happened over five years, the 2020 playoff appearance notwithstanding.  Jeter's departure was basically another reset button, as well.
9:31
I think I made this point in an earlier chat or earlier post on MLBTR, in a sense, 2022 was Ng's first year in total charge of the front office, without Jeter overhead.  And in a way, 2023 might even be her real "first year" since Jeter left so abruptly prior to the start of the 2022 campaign when most of the team's plans were already in place
This isn't to say that Ng is blameless, but rather it's just that it's hard to gauge her GM work when we don't know how much she has really been hamstrung by payroll, or how many of the shots she's really called
J-ROD SHOW
9:32
From a defensive perspective, how would you best optimize the team? IF of Segua/Wendle/Arraz/Cooper seems below average at best. OF with De La Cruz/Jazz/García also around below average to maybe average at best.   Would better long term play be for Marlins to go heavy on defense, contact hitters, and strong starting pitching?
Mark P
9:33
This is easier said than done of course, but it would behoove the Marlins to remake their team in the image of the Guardians or Rays......two clubs that adopt that defense/pitching/contact hitting triple threat.
Putting together such a shaky defensive team on paper threatens to undermine both the gains on offense, and the effectiveness of the pitching staff
