Hey, folks. Just an FYI that I probably won't be able to start until after 3pm Central, or 1 pm Pacific. There has been more news than expected this afternoon. Sorry for the delay.
4:05
Okay, let's get going. Sorry for the delay.
Trader Jerry

What free agent hitters outside of Ohtani make sense for the Mariners this offseason?
Darragh McDonald
4:05
A corner outfielder is probably the most logical, with Teoscar departing. Bringing him back would be fine. There's also Bellinger, Soler, Conforto, Pham, etc.
Teddy
4:06
Paul Goldschmidt for Ty France, Miller OR Woo, and two prospects in the 10-20 farm system ranking. Who says no? Becasuse of his age and contract, my gut is saying this might be a little much to offer for Goldy but what do you think?
Darragh McDonald
4:07
Goldy has a no-trade clause. I doubt he's going anywhere this winter.

The Orioles and Mariners seem like ideal trade partners. Baltimore has bats at multiple positions, and Seattle has young controllable arms in Woo/Miller. Is this a type of move either GM would pursue?
Darragh McDonald
4:08
Yeah, it makes sense on paper. But the M's also had a starting pitching surplus a year ago and didn't use it. So, we'll see, but the fit is logical.

My dream winter scenario: Signing hometown boy Blake Snell (who reportedly wants badly to be in Seattle) and then dealing from the super-surplus of strong starting arms as the headliner in a package for a premium bat. Can that work, and if so, who should Seattle target to replace Teo?
Darragh McDonald
4:11
I suppose it's possible but seems like a long shot to me.

One thing the Mariners have done recently is target players under contract/control through trade that might not require a ton of prospect capital because they don’t carry much surplus value given existing financial commitments (Suarez, Hernandez, Wong, to name a few). Who do you see as options that might fit into that group?  Perhaps a Cronenworth or McNeil? Gleyber’s situation might be similar to Hernandez as well
Darragh McDonald
4:13
Yeah, Gleyber makes sense there. Maybe Max Kepler, Alex Verdugo, Mike Yastrzemski.

Does a deal centered around Nimmo for Suarez make sense?  Seems like the Mets need the base help and the mariners need at least one more of.
Darragh McDonald
4:14
Nimmo fits best in center, where the M's already have some guy.

In 2023, under Stanton's ownership, the Mariners were ranked 29th out of 30 teams in off-season spending after leading the league in operating income the previous year.

Will ownership move from being 29th/30 teams in off-season spending to somewhere closer to middle of the pack?
Darragh McDonald
4:15
I don't know if that's a good metric to use. The Dodgers also spent very little last winter but already had a bunch of money on the books.

4:15
What would you put the % odds at of Ty France being on the 2024 opening day roster?
Darragh McDonald
4:16
I mentioned this in the outlook but I think he'll be back. Him and Suarez both had similar exit velocities and hard hit rates to 2022 but fewer home runs. I would expect them to bounce back.

they just added ort. what do u think about that

2024 World Series confirmed.

If Pete Alonso is available, what would the package look like to aquire him?
Darragh McDonald
4:17
Probably similar to the Teoscar package. It's a similar situation, one year of control left and a pretty high salary.
Anthony
4:17
Does an Anthony Santander trade make sense for the M's and Orioles? He's in his last year of arbitration, a bit less strike out prone than Teo, and the Mariners are always seemingly willing to trade from their bp depth. Does a trade similar to last year's Swanson/Teo trade make sense?
Darragh McDonald
4:17
I can see it, sure.
Sodo Mojo
4:18
Who do you see the Mariners trying to lock up to long term extensions in the off season?  Gilbert, Kirby, and Cal seem like the logical choices am I missing anyone?
Darragh McDonald
4:19
Yeah, those all make sense. Maybe the younger starters as well.
CoBro
4:19
Please crush my hope that the M's find a way to trade for Juan Soto this winter
Darragh McDonald
4:19
I don't think he'll be available. Padres wanna try again while their stars are still young-ish.
Joe
4:19
Jung-Hoo Lee seems like he’d be a good fit. What kind of contract do you see him getting?
Darragh McDonald
4:20
It's tough to say because the guys coming over from Asia tend to have wide gaps in terms of how they're viewed by the different clubs. We saw this with Yoshida, where Boston went way higher than anyone predicted.
4:22
I would guess he gets something similar to Ha-Seong Kim, four years in the 20-30 range. But that's kind of a stab in the dark.
Taylor
4:22
What do you think the best way for the M's to resolve their 2B issue is? I'd like to see a competent, everyday 2B who wouldn't require so many years that Cole Young or Colt Emerson are blocked when their time comes. Maybe Merrifield is a fit?
Darragh McDonald
4:23
Merrifield is probably the best free agent option. Given his age, he probably won't get more than two years or so. Gleyber could be available on the trade market, with just one year of control in his case.

Who are the clear sellers this winter? What are their best pieces? And which one of them is the most ideal trade partner for M’s?
Darragh McDonald
4:24
This is a key thing with the upcoming offseason. Most of the clear sellers have already sold a lot of their most enticing pieces, such as the A's.

Lot of people mentioning the cards as our likely trade partner.  Who do u see us finally ending trading with? Cards, padres, reds, orioles?
Darragh McDonald
4:25
Those are all pretty logical clubs to line up with. They all have some bats and could use pitching.
Roger
4:25
Do you expect the Mariners to sign any free agents or sit on their ass and miss out like usual?
Darragh McDonald
4:26
I expect them to go after Ohtani. No idea if they can get him or not though.

I pride myself on asking the worst dumb hypothetical "who hangs up" so...Logan Gilbert for Ozzie Albies?
