Congrats on a great career! How hard was it for you in 2021 seeing the great numbers you put up in AAA but not getting called up to the majors?
Jason Kipnis
10:30
It was tough cause I knew I was more than capable of helping any team at that point. Problem was the entire Braves infield was healthy and raking, so there was no spot open. Then you add the fact that getting called up would’ve gotten me a ring too and it stings a little more

I know you have multiple business ventures going, but do your retirement plans include broadcasting? Really enjoyed your appearance on Cleveland's broadcast last season.
Jason Kipnis

I think you’ll start to see more of that. Not sure it’s the full time route I want to go, but I’m testing the waters and enjoying it so far!

Which was more fun: playing for Cleveland or the Cubs?
Jason Kipnis
10:35
Cleveland, lot more memories. Also playing in empty stadiums for the cubs that year didn’t seem like I got the full experience.

Hi Jason, time really flies, seems like you just came up! I’m curious what prompted you into retirement at age 33?
Jason Kipnis
10:39
I’m 35 now. Didn’t get any good offers last year to play at 34, so it was kind of hard to get one at 35 with a year off from playing. Add that to my body not working the way I wanted it to and the game going younger, and I had my answer.

I loved you as a player, Jason, you were tough and clutch, but no secret you lost a bit vs LHP later in your career.  Did you ever wonder why Tito didn't sub you out more from 2017-19?  I think you had 450 plus PA vs LHP dragging down your OPS.  Often Yandy Diaz was ignored.  I found it curious.  Thank you, have a wonderful retirement.
Jason Kipnis
10:42
I still had confidence in myself to hit against anyone so no, I never wondered why I wasn’t being subbed out.  Backups can always look like better options after the fact because they get to use the “what if”

When you play at such a high level and had such a long career, how hard is it to adjust mentally to retiring?  Are you relieved to finally have a break or is it hard to fill time?  Thank you and I enjoyed watching you play.
Jason Kipnis
10:43
It hasn’t been fun. I think that’s another reason I wrote the letter and announced it, to help with closure. I’ll never not miss playing but I’ll find ways to enjoy my next chapter so much that it’ll become easier.

Is your bromance with Vinnie Pestano still alive and well? Congrats on your retirement!

Is it ever! Going on a little bourbon trail/golf trip with him in may!

Hey Jason, question from Canada. Was wondering if you could shed some light on the locker room reaction to Jose Bautista's comments about Ryan Merritt "shaking in his boots" before game 5 in 2016.
Jason Kipnis
10:46
On paper, the matchup didn’t look ideal… but that’s why you play the game between the lines and not on paper!

What did it feel like in June 2013 when you hit over .400 with a bunch of doubles? Were you able to just enjoy the hot streak, or was there pressure to keep it up?
Jason Kipnis
10:48
If you can’t enjoy that kind of hot streak as a player, you’re in the wrong business then. “Work” is already amazing but to be having that success too made everyday a lot of fun to show up for.

What sort of impact did veterans like Jim Thome, Jason Giambi, and Mike Napoli have on your career?
Jason Kipnis
10:49
Some of the best guys I could ask for to have to learn from. All genuinely great people in and off the field with some of the best stories to go with em.

Explain the process of being drafted by the Padres and not signing? Was that more on your end - wanting to go back for your senior year, or was the money the Padres offering not enough or is there another reason you can share?
Jason Kipnis
10:51
Didn’t know enough about the draft at that time to be honest. Still had two years of eligibility left and although I didn’t really set an asking price, SD didn’t come close either.

What's your favorite thing to do during the off-season?

Golf + Travel.

When rehabbing an injury, is being in the right place mentally just as important as the physical rehabilitation?
Jason Kipnis
10:54
Very much so. There’s a lot of chances to make things worse because you’re not in the right head space. You start to want to cut corners and negotiate your own health because you’re in such a rush to get back.  On top of that, you also feel in the way of the team.

How did you choose your advisor/agent? What factors influenced your choice?
Jason Kipnis
10:56
I actually had a few before ending with the ones I’m still with today. Find someone that you trust, enjoy being around and hopefully they have experience.

Game 7 loss was a heartbreaker for me as a fan. But I imagine it was worse as a player. How long did it take to get over that gut punching feeling?
Jason Kipnis
10:57
I’ll let ya know when it happens.

Do you think Tito stuck with you too long when your numbers dipped in your last years in Cleveland? I think he can be loyal to a fault.
Jason Kipnis
10:58
Even as my numbers dipped, I would’ve still taken myself over any of the other options. That’s more of a question for Tito I guess.
