what's up everyone !!!  thanks to Tim and the MLB Trade Rumors people for the invite, I'm looking forward to talking some baseball!!!!

Congratulations on the career! If you could go back and alter 1 decision as GM, what would you change & why?
Jim Duquette
2:56
always the Kazmir trade !!! is the one deal I'd do over but I think if I could "manage" the ownership part of the GM job, I would have had more success in the long run
Dave
2:56
Do you see L. Giolito returning to his 2019-2021 levels or was 2022 the beginning of his downward spiral?
Jim Duquette
2:57
I think Lucas is going to have a huge year, I spoke with him in ST and he is in great shape first off, he's been re-working his mechanics and lastly, he just seemed in a good place mentally !
Dave

Can Brady Singer take the next step and be a dependable innings eater with a sub-3.25 ERA?
Jim Duquette
2:58
I think Singer is a quality starter that can repeat what he did last year, which would be plenty good enough !!
Dave
2:58
What kind of upside does A. Gimenez possess and what kind of power to you project him developing into?  Did we see his ceiling last year, or is there another gear for him?
Jim Duquette
2:59
Gimenez showed more power last year than I thought he would... he's a classic example of not putting limitations on a good hitter... so, I believe he'll end up being a plus second baseman and I wouldn't be surprised if they make him their SS next year after Rosario becomes a free agent!

Jim, thanks for doing this.  With the Spring that NY’s Volpe has had, won’t the Yankees be making a mistake by insisting on keeping Donaldson rather than give the kid some reps at third and just eat the remaining (huge) dollars on Donaldson contract? If Volpe fails in his initial exposure to MLB pitching, they can just play LeMahieu and/or O. Cabrera at 3B. What do you think?
Jim Duquette
3:01
interesting on JD, I think they let him hopefully figure it out with the bat earlier in the season and if he cannot, then DJL becomes his replacement.... I'd wait on Volpe to see what happens at SS by June, and be the protection for Peraza if he struggles.  eventually he'll end up at 2b IMO

Thanks for taking questions! I have a car app (don't know if I can say the name...) that has a station you are a frequent contributor on. Nowhere near as good as my MLBTradeRumors app but enough with shameless sucking up. I am a St Louis Cardinals fan and think MO is a top 4 or 5 GM in baseball. He and the owner speak often about not wanting to pay megabucks for players in their late 30s/40s. Will see a trend for massive deals for shorter time frame? If you value  WAR @ 9-10M, it makes sense to pay an expected 5 WAR player $40M. Tell me that could be a way for my Cards to get in on Shotani.  Thank you for the chat.
Jim Duquette
3:03
I love the job MO does every year , they are so consistently good and he does not get enough credit IMO.  on the longer term deals, I think teams would love to have shorter term even if the yearly salary goes up, but I don't see that happening any time soon... which is tough for the Cards in the Ohtani pursuit

Do you still ponder getting back into the executive side of the game or do you prefer sleep and not working 20 hour days?
Jim Duquette
3:04
haha, I prefer my sleep and current lifestyle over the crazy hours of an executive but I've always thought about being a Special Assistant somewhere and almost was recently !

Why was there zero investment in the international market for the Orioles during your time?
Jim Duquette
3:05
the owner didn't trust the information and reports on the players in the DR and VZ markets, he had been burned in the past.  So, we were never able to convince him otherwise.... that's the short answer of many many conversations !
Prospects
3:05
Who would you rank as the best three farm systems in developing players?
Jim Duquette
3:07
good question, Dodgers for sure ... the Rays are doing things well , Guardians rank up there for sure... its a more detailed and nuanced answer than I have time for... I could probably write a long paper on it.. but its also related to the scouting departments as well
Mets GM
3:07
Hey Jim, 8 years, $240 million enough for a Pete Alonso Mets extension?
Jim Duquette
3:08
well, if you saw my on SNY recently, that is exactly what I proposed... personally I think it would get it done because it would be the highest paid at the position by a long shot over Freeman and Olson... and that is ultimately why it will be hard for him to get more

3:08
how do trades come to be? And why are some more difficult than others?
Jim Duquette
3:10
there are so many convos that take place over the months and years. and one of those can spark an idea or trade.. when they don't get done, it tends to be because one team valued their player higher than the one they were speaking to

Do you feel like it’s important to develop relationships with the players as a GM or is it easier to do the job by viewing them through an assets lens?
Jim Duquette
3:11
I always felt that the front office should be developing a relationship with their own players and helping with the culture of the clubhouse instead of leaving that solely to the coaches and managers.  and as long as you are truthful about your intentions, the players generally understand its a business and things happen or change.

What will it take to keep Aaron Nola in Philadelphia?
Jim Duquette
3:12
I love Nola and hope he stays in Philly and its hard to think that it won't cost around $180-$200M to keep him there over about 6 or 7 years

If you were given a new MLB franchise, where would you put it and what would its name be?
Jim Duquette
3:14
I'm terrible at names for teams, I can tell you the ones I don't like. haha, but I think I would want a franchise in Nashville and another in maybe Austin, TX

Can you see Gunnar Henderson winning ROY?
Jim Duquette
3:14
Gunnar is my front runner pick for ROY, he's a beast and is going to have a big year !
Metsin7
3:14
Do you agree that Billy Eppler has done a poor job these past 2 years in constructing a solid bullpen? It seems that Eppler ignores the bullpen problems that this team has been suffering from for over a decade.
Jim Duquette
3:17
I didn't think the Mets Pen was that bad last year, it was top 10 in MLB in a lot of categories and of course Diaz was incredible.  I did feel it was one reliever short from ranking higher, and they need Smith to step up this year for it to be similar to last..... and Eppler has only been here for 1 season so far. we'll see what it looks like this year
Kevin
3:17
How would you handle the Mets 3b situation to start the year? Go with Baty out of the gates and see if you can get a 1st rnd pick if he wins ROY. Or stash him in AAA to give Escobar a chance to prove he's better than he was last year?
Jim Duquette
3:18
I'd start with EE first, he made those hitting changes last year at the end and it made a huge difference.. and then let Baty learn an outfield position to see if he can get back to NY playing LF.... eventually he'll end up at 3b unless they go f/a shopping
Southpaw
3:19
What are the most important qualities of a field manager?  How important is in-game decision making?
Jim Duquette
3:20
managing the pitching is the most important for me, and then communication with your players.... I'd rather have a good X's and O's manager on the field and let my coaches handle the communication if I could have only one
Greg
3:20
Is the postseason a crapshoot?
Jim Duquette
3:22
I don't know about a crapshoot, but there is some luck involved with certain moments of a game or series hinging on a bad call or play.... but if you're there in the post season often enough, you should win a World Series .... Houston has been an incredible story but the Giants were maybe the best team not named the Yankees in my front office/broadcasting career
Nick
3:22
do you think Kyle Tucker will live up to his lofty expectations this year?
