Hey yo
It's the bad guy
I have a toothpick loaded so it must be time to chat
About baseball mostly
11:00
But I am also well versed in other subjects including but not limited to:
the care and psychological handling of small children
11:01
Pokemon that I was forced to learn about because of said children
the collected works of Brandon Sanderson
how to keep hermit crabs alive for up to three months
And that's about it

I need to grab a returning arm... should it be Tylor Megill or Jose Urquidy?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:02
Easy Megill for me - the whiffery upside is too much to pass up. Granted, he’ll inevitably get hurt again but hopefully, it’s party time until then

16 team H2H Points league. Have a very solid lead for a WC spot and probably don't need to trade for that purpose. To advance I may have to address a SP problem. We start 5 SPs each week. My top 5 at the moment are Darvish, Bradish, Gill, Buehler and Scott. Civale, Clevinger and Ashcraft can be slotted. Bobby Miller, Gavin Williams, Ed. Cabrera and Maeda are on the IL but should/could return in a month or so.

Trade Option #1: Luzardo (on 5yr contract) will probably cost Evan Carter,

Trade option #2: Bibee and Pasquantino for Carter, Mayo and Mason Black.

At the moment Hoskins is DL'd and backfilled with Santana (not so great).

Leaning towards #1 since I don't need a 1B desperately. I could counter with Carter for Bibee.

Thoughts?

11:03
yeah, I agree that you could use an SP upgradde
spelled with two D’s for a double dose of my pimping
Luzardo for Carter isn’t awful on paper but I really worry that his arm is a ticking time bomb. I’d much rather target Bibee (who I really like) whether for Carter straight up or something like #2. He’s a really strong asset.

Is it time to cut bait on Vinnie P? If so, who would be a similar underperforming bat with rebound potential to target?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:04
I’d say no unless there happens to be someone dramatically better on the wire. But I also don’t believe he’s had a disastrous season. Still a $6 player on the FG auction calculator, which isn’t great but also not awful for someone taken where he was in drafts. More than Vlad Jr lol
11:06
I'd target guys like Y. Alvarez, Olson, Riley, Arozarena
Chip
11:07
Mitchell Parker obviously had a great start to the season. Is there any fantasy juice there?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:07
Ehh, some but I wouldn't get too crazy. Decent stuff but doesn't get enough whiffs right now
Young OF

I've been clutching Chourio and Carter since draft day, but now have a ton of IL guys overflowing my allowed spots. Should I be looking to offload the youth since it's a non-keeper league? Will either one produce even a slightly under average year? (thanking every god known to mankind I didn't also draft Corbin Carroll this year....)
Nicklaus Gaut
11:08
You can only hold youth for so long in redraft - I'd rather hold Carter than Chourio.
And congrats on not drafting Carroll!

AL-only league, we do Quality Starts + 0.5 Wins instead of just Wins.  I have Gilbert, Ober, Bibee, Woo, Gil, Marsh, Lorenzen, and Irvin.  Is there anyone here worth dropping or should I be looking to trade one?  Are we sure the Orioles are going to a six man rotation, since Irvin pitched in relief yesterday.
Nicklaus Gaut
11:10
I like that staff - Irvin and Lorenzen would be my targets if you can use them to fill other hole via trade though

I think we will have a bunch of kids coming up later this year/early next year. What pieces do you see that are already on the team are keepers for our next run? Abrams looks like a lock, Ruiz signed an extension but is struggling. Do Jacob Young/Lane Thomas/Luis Garcia/Mac Gore/Josh Gray make it and are there any others? Should we be concerned with Ruiz's struggles? What free agent pitchers should we be looking at next year when the Corbin contract is finally done?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:12
I think all those guys make it except for Josiah - that fastball has always been flat and I don't think it's gonna change
11:13
Ruiz's struggles have been ugly but I personally give a pretty wide berth to young catchers as their development curves can be so long
Can't believe he's still just 25
feels like he's 30

Good morning Nick.  Thanks for doing these chats.  First question: Luis Gil (SP - Yankees), on Saturday pitched 6 innings, striking out 14 … looks studly.  Yet, prognosticators including Ariel Cohen (Beat the Shift podcast, Rotoballer, etc.) argue that he is a regression candidate and should be traded away, if possible.  What's your perspective?
Nicklaus Gaut
11:13
You're welcome!
11:15
I get (and often agree with) the sentiment of selling high on young pitchers with hot starts but there also isn't anything too scary lurking in Gils peripherals that are screaming "sell! sell now!".
11:16
It really kind of depends on your team context. If he's a big part of your rotation I can see holding but if you have a big hole on offense that Gil could fill, a sell-high is reasonable.

Second question: Esteury Ruiz (OF - Oakland) … why do you think that his SB numbers are down? He's 11-for-55 (after the bizarre relegation to Las Vegas), but has only 4 SB for the season.  He had 60 and 67 in '22 and '23 (and he was out for a month in '23 with a shoulder injury).  What is the most realistic way to assess his performance, now and rest of season?  Again, thanks.

I hate to play armchair psychologist BUT...I think he's as annoyed with his situation as we are and it's translating to on the field...Which I totally get lol
11:18
I have a feeling that he's going to start burning bags up the second he's  an everyday player
11:19
I mean, he's not stupid - he knows what his meal ticket is and isn't going to just not do it anymore
Now you got me all riled up thinking about how much I hate all things Oakland shenanigans
