Hello! I am here to baseball chat with you. Home after seeing the top 2019 MLB Draft prep types at PG National, also saw a Dunedin/Port Charlotte game and the FSL All Star Game while I was over there. Going to see college Team USA next week with what is the most loaded roster they've had in a long time, may be a dozen day one guys on the team.

Is there a direct link to THE BOARD on the homepage or under a menu that I'm missing?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:11
Yes there is, mouse over the LEADERS header and its near the top of that menu

Going into the season, India was pegged as a guy with average tools across the board. How has this season changed how you view his upside? Also, is it possible that he could stick at short? Thanks
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:13
He lost some weight and as sometimes happens, the tools got better when he did that. Power went from 50 to 55, speed went from 40-45 to 50, defense went from fringy to above at 3B and his offensive approach improved, then the stats jumped with the new power which he mostly tapped into
12:14
The upside is still no 60 tools, but there's plenty of 3 win players in the bigs with no 60 tools that are just above average at everything and play everyday at a useful position, so he could turn into that. Seems likely to fall into the 2.0 to 3.0 WAR band for me, though.
that's a 50 or 55 FV, for the record. 2.5 to 3.0 is a 55.

Kolby Allard is still dealing in AAA.  I think the generally accepted floor is 5th starter.  What does his... 75th percentile look like? Not the "HOLY CRAP HOW HE DO THIS", but, "Yeah, I can believe it"?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:15
Like a 3rd starter/3 WAR/60 FV. It's not common for 50-55 stuff to turn into a 3rd starter but those guys exist if there's elite feel.

What are the EV's scouts look for in HS level hitters? Is there a threshold for scouts that says X mph = 55+ Raw?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:16
Scouts still largely don't know what to do with EV since there's a lot of office people that don't know exactly what to do with them, either. As an example, we knew Trevor Larnach (MIN, 1st round Oregon State) had somewhere from 60 to 70 raw power, but he didn't lift the ball a ton in BP and doesn't take full effort swings often. He hit some balls in game 112-115 mph which, to me and Eric, confirms it's 65 or 70 raw and he's getting to it in games.
12:17
It's nice to see like a 108 or 110, but there's guys with 40 raw power that do that a couple times a season. It's more useful to get EV in games on balls that are flyballs (not liners or popups) and see the highest repeatable number they can produce in a game. Takes a big sample, which we often don't get with amateurs

When a team sends a player to extended spring training (as the Braves have done with Acuņa), who else is there?  If not playing GCL games, what do players do there?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:19
It's at the spring training complexes, so there's lots of space and multiple fields and usually better medical resources than at an affiliate. There's lots of things like sim games on backfields during GCL games to get reps for everyone and rehabbing pitchers get to face hitters without being in a game or a pitcher throws 30 pitches over 4 innings and it's time for the next guy but he needs to throw 20 more pitches on a back field to get his work in.

Have you had any eyes or reports on CJ Alexander? Cheap internet scouting tells me he has real power, but I'd hear from someone who might actually know.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:20
Didn't see him but talked to guys that have. It's likely 1B but it plus lefty raw and some feel to hit.

Is Logan Gilbert the top prospect in the Mariners system now?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:21
haven't drilled down on that system's update yet, but it's him or Kyle Lewis. Evan White is the only other 45.

Boone mentioned after Lasagna's debut that of course he's gonna walk more guys in the majors, major leaguers won't swing at as much junk out of the zone. Is this something to be aware of with all/most pitching call ups? Sort of like an immediate adjustment. Makes sense and feels similar to the kinds of tears hitters go on when they get called up and start seeing more strikes each ab. Is the heart of this issue more of a command/control thing? (sorry so long winded!)
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:23
That's common. Some guys just skip right past that for some reason, but it's hard to predict who it will be. There's not a ton of flailing at sliders just off the plate in the bigs if it's a 50 SL, but that's pretty common in the minors.

As a soft complaint I must say that it feels like the content of these chats have become so much more niche and they lack diversity, either its a prospect chat which has a limited audience or it's chats dominated by Pirates/Mariners or O's. I've heard the argument that the chat interaction is free and we shouldn't complain but the interaction with the writers is a large part of what drives my traffic to the site so I do feel like it isn't out of place to say something. I can't possibly be the only one that feels this way.
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:24
This will likely be the first and last time I'm ever accused to talking about the Pirates, Mariners and Orioles too much.

Josh Stowers with a homerun in his professional debut. Doesn't seem to be much of scouting report out on this guy. Any word on what his tools are?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:25
Outfield tweener that likely fits in LF, hit over power but a little of both and was really hot to end the year

Sorry for the spam! I always miss these chats and have so many questions! You said last week you hesitate to say Juan Soto is Acuña. Well after another week of holding his own at the ML level can we say Soto is Acuña yet?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:26
Acuna is a 70 runner that can play a good CF and Soto is a RF that bats from the other side of the plate. Can't he just be Soto?

Kiley - general scouting/projection question: are scouts generally hesitant to project prospects with strong plate discipline but limited power as being above-average major leaguers just since MLB pitchers will pound the zone against them? Eric seemed to allude to that in his write up of a guy in the Herrera trade
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:28
Especially in this current MLB, if the guy can't hit the ball out of the yard to multiple parts of the park, then what's the pitcher afraid of? Particularly a rookie hitting near the bottom of the lineup.

Do you have a theory on any correlation between splitters and straight fastballs? It seems like many guys who throw a splitter have "straight fastball" as a criticism. (Mize, Ohtani, Eovaldi, Tanaka, Bailey)
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:29
A sinker and splitter move very similarly and thus there isn't much separation in velo or movement

12:29
With super teams being such a hot issue in the NBA, if Bryce harper, Manny Machado and Clayton Kershaw all decided to sign on the same team would it send shockwaves through the sport?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:29
Well, yeah
12:31
But three studs don't change the fortunes of a franchise in MLB like they do in NBA. One gets hurt, one has a weaker year than expected and you're almost in for $100M for like 8-10 WAR when you need almost 50 WAR to make the playoffs.
You'd need to have a big payroll and already have a really good core that isn't that expensive for that to even make sense. And that's a very small group of teams

I need to hear more about this AXE body spray accident.  Did you injure yourself while running from a mob of gorgeous women who were intoxicated by your scent?

I'm chatting from the couch and she's sitting right next to me being very sleepy, propped up on pillows and blankets like the couch is made of concrete or something. This and her fear of water is why she gets called Princess.

Nathaniel Lowe's stats are crazy. Thoughts?
AvatarKiley McDaniel
12:35
Will need to keep hitting since it's a big 1B-only type that's a platoon guy if it's a 45 bat and/or the strike zone discipline/game power backs up. But he's hitting like he may turn into a 50 FV Matt Adams type.
