Welcome, chatters, to another great Monday -- tons of questions in the queue, will do my best to get to 'em all. If you're adding ones now, remember that Context is King (lg size; non-traditional cats; keeper or 1 yr lgs, etc). Onward!

Hi Brent, thank you for all the help each week.  In a weekly points league (HR and RBI key) would you bench Cron (7 at Coors vs studs) for Vogelbach (7 w/ 6 vs RH) Choi (7) or Cesar H (7) this week? And is Haase a  -- better/much better/worse /equal -- start versus Jeffers at ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:09
Cesar or Vogey over Cron, yes, according to our strength of week #s. And yes, I'd play Haase's hot hand now -- give him a "better" rating. GL!

I'm 2d in a deep NL-only 5x5, but my SPs have deserted me, with Flaherty, S. Gray, Carrasco and Mikolas on the IL. Only active SPs are Burnes and Wood. Don't want to fall behind too much in Ks and Ws, but don't want to blow up my Ratios either. Who would you pick, in order, to fill a slot while I wait for my walking wounded to return? Victor Gonzalez, W. Suero, Lauer, Velasquez, Br. Garrett and Lucchesi are available. Yes, pickings are slim.
Brent Hershey
12:10
...as they are in only leagues. My order would be Lauer, VV, Gonzalez, Suero, Garrett, then Lucchesi. Tough sledding for sure ...

Any promising news on the following: Alec Burleson, Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar, Ethan Elliott, Maximo Acosta?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Sorry, have not heard any updates on any of these; will continue to ask around.

12:18
Thanks for doing these! 1. Will G Hampson get regular PT - or will Col keep jerking their guys around? 2. W Flores? What can we expect ROS? 3. Will SD trade for Gallo? They already have lots of guys! 4. Will Seattle trade K Seager?
Brent Hershey
12:18
  1. Hampson's slump last week is ill-timed w/ Rodgers back.COL history doesn't help.
  2. A better ROS, but aware that lots of timesharing going on in SF. Longo injury is positive for Flores, tho
  3. /4: No idea either one; I don't get too far into projecting trades at this point. Just let em happen and then react.

Hi Brent - We talk a lot about sample sizes and also about “when a player demonstrates a skill, he owns it”. Please combine those two to assess Danny Santana. Is he unable to make contact?  Is he just done?  Or should we exercise patience in hopes of that 20/20 season he had a couple years back?
Brent Hershey
12:20
Pessimistic here for a big rebound given BOS needing production, have a lot of movable parts, and the fact that Santana's 2019 looking more and more like the outlier. As was that first weekend. I'm moving on.

Good morning, folks!

Brent, Adam Frazier's having a heck of a year thus far. Do you think he's got a shot to win the batting title? Top 5, at least?

Thanks,
Joey
Brent Hershey

Frazier has had some good fortune so far, but also has improved skills. Yes, think it's somewhat sustainable this year and Top5 BA could well be in play.

Morning Brent, how do you feel about these three in 12 tm h2h league 6x6 OBP+K/BB - Taillon, Corbin and Carlson. Taillon looks replaceable really, I held him for so long because he's a K/BB asset and had good underlying numbers early the season. This week or the first start against Pit feels like his last chance for me. Carlson has been ok but more or less seems like empty average. Maybe in a year or two he'll unlock that power but statcast numbers are so boring and looks very droppable too. I ended up with a very good team but with a few big players going on DL I don't feel comfortable waiting around for these guys to turn it on now.
Brent Hershey
12:28
Taillon: Think you're right; his numbers rougher than I realized. Likely have better 12-tm options.
Carlson: Think you're underselling his ability to be a quick learner/adjuster as he showed in 2020. Sure, less steals than we thought (NO attempts so far!) and only middling power for now, but age, experience says he could turn it on quickly. And OBP is helpful, right?
Corbin: I def was wrong here; thought a bounce back was coming. Think you can move on in 12-tmrs.
Go Mets!

Brent, thanks for spending some of your time doing this. This chat is always a must-read for me.

Today, I have a question. I'm a bit of a "middle-of-the-pack" team in my dynasty league. I'm trying to identify the right foundation to build with.

Regarding the C position, who would you rather have for the next 5 years. Typical 5 categories + OBP as a 6th. Joey Bart, Carson Kelly, Daulton Varsho, or Bo Naylor?

Thanks again!!
Brent Hershey
12:30
Probably Kelly, as he's shown the most at the MLB level and this double-digit walk rate in 2021 also was there in 2019. Especially if your window is sooner rather than later, like him the best of those listed. Bart #2.

Hey Brent, how concerned should fantasy managers be with MLB's apparent crackdown of the use of sticky stuff by pitchers?
Brent Hershey
12:38
My opinion is "not much," until someone can make a good argument that some pitchers will be affected more or less than others. My working assumption (again, could be wrong) is that most pitchers are using the stuff; and if the spin rate changes we've seen across the game in the past two weeks since this broke ARE attributed to the "crackdown", then more or less everyone is going to be affected in the same way. IE, I still want a "clean" Cole or Bauer over a clean 2nd-tier starter. And trying to "guess" which pitchers will be more or less valuable relative to their peers is ... well, good luck. Sure, tons of other issues for the game to resolve around this issue ... but strictly for fantasy, can't say that it's something I'm worrying about too much.

12:39
Is it time to cut ties with CJ Cron in 10 teamers? He hasn't been as brutal since it's an OBP league but I have Moustakas and Conforto due back soon.
Brent Hershey
12:39
Prob yes in a 10-teamer. Definitely disappointing.
Pete
12:41
Please rank the following pitchers for saves+holds formats (5x5 roto, 10 teamer): Yusmeiro Petit, Garrett Crochet, Peter Fairbanks, Adam Ottavino and Chris Martin. Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:41
Fairbanks, Martin, Ottavino, Petit, Crochet? All have holds value, ranking then for me then is a mix of a) likelihood of saves IN ADDITION TO holds; b) likelihood for wins (team strength).

Brent!! Canada loves you!

How good do you think Jordan Groshans and Austin Martin are going to be? And do the Blue Jays fit them in as early as next season?

I just acquired them together in my keeper league to a contender for Nelson Cruz and Charlie Morton. Now the waiting begins.

Go Jays!
Brent Hershey
12:46
Thanks, International Friend! Seeing Martin for a couple double-A games several weeks ago, I echo others' questions about how much power might develop, as well as where he fits on the diamond -- though his defensive versatility is a good thing. In that same series, only saw Groshans DH for one game, but I wonder if he doesn't slide over to 3d when he gets to TOR. Hope to see more of them both later this year, but tend to believe in Groshans' bat for fantasy a bit more. For additional details, Chris Blessing and I talked about Martin in particular in our The Eyes Have It podcast, available in iTunes at at the site.

Thoughts on Vidal Brujan as a stash target if you need steals in shallow 5x5 leagues?
Brent Hershey

Do it.

It has been said, if you are patient enough eventually you will reach the end of your patience.  That is where I am with Clint Frazier.  Can I cut him?
Brent Hershey
12:47
Nice line. Yes, there are prob better alternatives out there.

12:48
Yermin Mercedes - you've got him 39-16-59-.261 ros but since April it's been downhill on the surface tho some underlying hope. Is there promise or is this statistical anomaly? If real he beats Carson Kelly ros and that's my crossroads. Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:48
Tough comparison b/c of the value Kelly brings at CA. But everything even, I'd want Kelly ROS, yes.

12:52
Hi Brent. Thanks for chatting. What should I do about Alex Cobb in a 12-team mixed H2H league?  His underlying skills (154 BPV) are much better than his surface stats, but LAA’s terrible defense may well continue to inflate his ERA and WHIP.   OTOH, he’s a free agent after this season and likely to be traded to a better defensive team (only the Tigers are worse).  Is Lucas Sims a good return for Cobb?  And if that offer is rejected, do I hold Cobb in hopes of regression and/or a trade, or move on?  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:52
In that context, yeah, might prefer the Sims risk over the Cobb risk. Otherwise, sort of agree that Cobb is pretty fringy in a 12-teamer, though at full strength (Trout / Rendon / Igelias especially), I wonder if LAA defense doesn't improve. But still might not be enough.
DrDave-BBHQ
12:54
In a keeper league where I have Trevor Bauer in his last year, I have trades offered (my choice of any 1).  K.Hayes, Avisail Garcia, Jesus Sanchez, Chisholm or Hunter Greene, all with 2-3 more years.  Whom would you choose?
Brent Hershey
12:54
Greene, Hayes or Jazz. And probably in that order, though I usually lean hitter (esp ones who've had some success at MLB level). But Greene's improved command with that velocity has been a big story. Expect the Reds to continue to move him quickly.
Brent Hershey
12:55
OK, lightning round to try to finish up here ..
That’s Priceless

11 team NL only 5 x 5 league:  In terms of counting stats and ABs alone, ROS who has greater value: Tim Locastro, Shogo Akiyama, or Luke Williams.
