Jason Mackey

Hello, everyone. Greetings from Cranberry. Finishing up a Pens column. We'll get started very shortly.
12:07
And away we go ...
J Mayer
12:07
Jason, exactly how sacrilegious and/or outstanding is it to suggest that I am on approaching the musicianship of one Jerry G and that I have given the Dead new life?
Jason Mackey
12:08
Ha. Not sacrilegious at all. I'm listening to Dead & Company from Fenway 6/24/23. Another example of all you've done. Incredible.

Jason, is my nice average enough to keep the wolves (e.g., Yorke, TJ) at bay, considering my power output and defense? Also, am I not the same dude who hit one dead center 404 in my first week in the bigs? If so, what happened?
Jason Mackey
12:10
I'm personally of the opinion that nobody with an OPS under .700 on an offensively deficient team should have a guaranteed spot. That said, it's not like there's a great replacement. I don't think Nick Yorke is the answer. I don't know who TJ is in this context, sorry.

I have followed Pitt football and basketball since 1963(first memory is listening on radio to 9-1 team lose to Roger Staubach and Navy) and I feel confident in making the declarative statement that since Jackie Sherrill left, the administrations and big donors simply have not had the commitment, financially, to maintain Pitt as a top 25 program. And now in this NIL and transfer era, that lack of commitment is amplified and puts Pitt in perennial mediocrity. Would you agree with that or do you think I am overstating it?
Jason Mackey
12:13
I feel like trying to sum up over 60 years of athletic success in a couple sentences might be hard. I mean, Pitt has not maintained its place as a top-25 program. So, on premise along you're probably right. But how many programs across the country have been a perennial top-25 outfit for over 60 years? I would also agree that Pitt hasn't done a good enough job leveraging its donors and prominent alums and funneling that money back into the athletic department. I think that's a fair critique.

Tomlin and his boys talk a big game, then play the game little.  Do other teams do this or is it a problem that Tomlin is enabling?
Jason Mackey
12:14
I think it's something that's fairly unique to the Steelers & Tomlin. He loves to say nothing. Until those times where he actually says something really big. And that hasn't always worked out great.
Coach T
12:14
Jason, please rank my following blunders in terms of odoriferousness and/or pure misguided arrogance: (1) failing to unleash proverbial hell in December, (2) making an ass out of myself with Tony D, or (3), the whole historic defense thing.
Jason Mackey
12:15
Ha. Good premise. I'll go the Dungy thing #1. Just no need. Pretty good team that year. December was ugly, too. I just think the stakes were higher with Dungy. Third has to be TBD. It's been two games. Let's try to relax.

12:15
Jason, can an NFL player weighing 146 pounds afford to not know the playbook?
Jason Mackey
12:16
He doesn't weigh 146 pounds, and it's not that simple. No NFL player can afford to not know the playbook. That also wasn't what he did. He was trying to make a play. He screwed up. Yes. But I don't think it's fair to say that Calvin Austin III doesn't know the playbook. He does.

12:16
Greetings Jason; I hope you were smart like me and took the under for the Pirates' win total for the season (75.5), time to cash in!
Jason Mackey
12:16
I don't bet. Very little knowledge of it. I have an addictive personality and I'm extremely competitive. I don't think it's a great idea for me to start.

I’ve been a die hard Pirates fan my whole life, is it possible Nuthead gets pressured out of ownership by MLB or the other owners?  Please say yesssss…
Jason Mackey
12:17
Sorry, but I doubt it. If Manfred puts pressure on the Pirates, does it do the same to the 2-3 teams spending less? Stick situation.

12:17
Jason, do you remember all that annoying talk about me bringing my unquestioned expertise in drafting big uglies back home? Yeah, I have not heard that much on that topic lately.
Jason Mackey
12:17
Sounds like a subject of one of my columns this week. Drafts have not been good enough. That has been part of it, for sure.
Pat B
12:17
Jason, was all that Sid talk just me clumsily telling KD to keep Sid's wingers?
Jason Mackey
12:18
I think it was telling Dubas to step on the gas. The Penguins can slow play this and probably will. I think Brisson was trying to get him to use some cap space, maybe move prospects, etc. The trade thing was a pseudo thread. I don't think Dubas is gonna move off his marks.
Johnny M
12:18
Jason, how is it possible that the guy who penned the truly horrendous Your Body is a Wonderland also be the same chap who has resurrected Brown Eyed Women and Mississippi Half Step, among others? Inexplicable.
Jason Mackey
12:18
Pretty crazy, you're right.
Guest
12:18
What would have to take place for Nutting to sell the tea,m
Jason Mackey
12:18
He would have to be intersted in doing so.
Aaron R
12:18
Is there any hope for this OL?  I'm a bit old for this amount of weekly beatings.
Jason Mackey
12:20
I'd sure hope. I can see why you're asking. Ha. The hope for me would be this: These guys have performed well individually at various times, even Broderick Jones. They just haven't done it this season. It could still happen. Not saying it will. But I do think it's in there.
Konnor
12:20
Jason, BC saved his damn job by getting lucky and drafting me, yes?
Jason Mackey
12:20
I don't think so. I still have a tough time seeing how you can bring back the GM six years into a regime change with a win total in the 60s. Isn't that why you fired everyone in 2019?
Wayward
12:20
Jason, thanks as always for the chats.  I think most people appreciate the job Kelly has done.  If there is a new GM, do you think he would keep Kelly on the organization's recommendations, or do you think he would want his "own" guy?
Jason Mackey
12:21
I think Kelly stays no matter what.
Raffy
12:21
Jason, was it a tad premature for The Pirates' broadcast team to compare my technique to that Judge guy?
Jason Mackey
12:21
I didn't see or hear what you're referencing, but if they compared anyone to Aaron Judge, yeah, it's probably premature.
Keith
12:21
Hello Jason. Do you have any recommendations yet for Cherington’s replacement ? I’m hoping they don’t miss out on anyone the longer they keep him around.
Jason Mackey
12:22
Well, they haven't done anything yet. One option who would intrigue me, though: Dayton Moore. Currently an advisor with the Rangers. Still only 58. Built the Royals. Knows small market baseball. Now ex-Rays president Mark Silverman is another one.
Stash
12:22
Jason, are those still refusing to deem SO the greatest freaking player ever just talking silly?
Jason Mackey
12:24
Assuming you mean Shohei Ohtani? Nah. I still think it's reasonable to have a debate about that. He's obviously absurdly talented. Not arguing that. But the counting group's feelings aren't for nuthin'.
Go Blue 72
12:26
Why do we continue to trot out Devanney ?  Why do the Pirates bother with Suwinski and Bae?  I would put Davis in that category bit remain hopeful, maybe delusional, that someone can fix that swing and get him to be productive.  In short, why are the Pirates determined to show us these sub .200 hitters at the end of the year?  It seems like it is reinforcing the fans’ belief that they can’t develop or trade for talent.
