Hello, folks, and greetings from Las Vegas. Going to go for an hour; I have to shower and head to Golden Knights practice at noon my time, 3 p.m. yours. So let's get this thing started ...

Mackey, after last night's Knights win I just had to get in here again and rub it in your face that you told me in this chat last summer that the Vegas Knights would stink and look where they are now!!! You gonna eat some crow for lunch and humble pie for dessert?   How did you not see they were gonna be good? Look at that roster, dude!!!
Jason Mackey

I would try and let that one go, if you could. ... They looked tremendous. Extremely fun to watch, especially live. Fleury is in some kind of zone right now.

Are you on the road covering the Conference Finals or are you done travelling to games now?
Jason Mackey

I'm just doing a short D.C.-Vegas thing; flights were cheap, and we obviously have a lot of guys out here with Pittsburgh ties. After that, TBD. If it's Vegas and the Capitals, I wouldn't rule out a D.C. return.

Tom Wolfe just died. Have you read any of his work on the Grateful Dead?
Jason Mackey
1:01
I have not, but I read his obit in The Washington Post yesterday, and I'm going to. Good, I assume?

Can the Caps hang on and win this thing?
Jason Mackey
1:02
Eh, I think they can win the series. I have a tough time seeing them beating Vegas or Winnipeg, honestly. I'm picking them to lose to Tampa in seven, FWIW.

The movie you always talk about in here - Sudden Death  stars Jean Claude Van Damme. Did you appear in the regular movie or a sequel? Thanks for the Pens stories!
Jason Mackey

Regular movie. As an extra with my dad and stepmom.

Jason, I’m all in on the #TavaresWatch and #WadellWatch for the Penguins this offseason. Do you see it as a legit possibility they trade with Carolina and/or could sign John Tavares? What about any FA defenseman, which ones entice you?
Jason Mackey
1:03
They're not getting John Tavares. That's insanity. Free agent defensemen I like: John Moore and Calvin de Haan. Nothing sexy or expensive. Just somebody solid, a No. 5.

You gonna have time now that the season is over to read the new John Selvin book on the Dead called Fare Thee Well?  It should be a good book with page turner anecdotes.
Jason Mackey
1:03
I hope so, but there's still work to be done. Thanks for the rec. I'll check it out.

Do you mind telling me what your per diem is when travelling for work? My boss is trying to only give me $20 a day and he actually said that's what sports reporters get! I'm shooting for $65 a day. Thanks! What is fair?
Jason Mackey

That's not up to me to decide, and I'm not going to talk in exactitudes for the P-G's expense plan. I'll say this: It's 2018, print journalism is a tough business, and I'm tremendously appreciative of the financial commitment the P-G makes for travel and doing the job the right here. I think we're very lucky.

is Blues for Allah the most culturally relevant album the Dead put out? Not for the time it was released, but for the times now. I put that on the record player and I think that Jerry and the Boys must have had ESP to see the times now and how they are. It is really an ahead of its time album. Is it a favorite of yours?
Jason Mackey
1:05
It's OK. I'm not big on the album stuff, to be honest. More live the better. Album stuff sounds way to contained, not enough energy.

Any chance in heck the Pens could trade up in the draft to get R. Dahlin?   What would a trade that far up cost them?
Jason Mackey
1:05
More than they have to give. So, so.
*So, no.

Why don't the Pens have a first round draft pick this year?
Jason Mackey
1:06
They traded it in the Brassard deal.

Would Rutherford consider going into the season with a few million of cap room to save for around the trade deadline?
Jason Mackey
1:06
Sure. I wouldn't rule that out. Jim isn't going to do something over the summer just to do it. That said, if they keep money, it will be because that's what he thinks is best, not that ownership didn't endorse spending it or something like that. Depends on the market.

Hi Jason,  lucky you being at the Vegas game last night!  So happy for them!   You tweeted the Pittsburgh market has the highest viewership rate for the playoffs, what does that 4.29 stat mean?
Jason Mackey
1:07
I don't have a blessed clue, other than it was better than the number produced by anybody else on that list.

Jason, you were saying last week that the NHL is going with smaller goalie pads next season and that the pads could be so small as to be almost undetectable in order to increase scoring which will in turn increase ratings and revenue for Big Brother NHL. I tried to find supporting articles on this but wasn't able to. Any more info you can share with us on this? Please and thank you.
Jason Mackey
1:07
I don't remember breaking that news, but OK. I remember being asked if I would endorse a move to smaller pads, and I remember saying I would -- so long as player safety wasn't compromised.

In your opinion, is the NHL Commissioner a good person or is he an evil buffoon like Roger Goodell?
Jason Mackey
1:09
I don't have an opinion on Bettman or Goodell personally because I don't feel like we know them personally. I think there are things both could be doing better. Head injuries, for instance. And the NHL at the Olympics. I'll never, ever agree with Bettman's stance on that. Nor do I like the work stoppages that have occured under Bettman. But he has always been nice and respectful to me, and I'd like to keep my comments on his job in line with that.

I want to know if you were able to keep a straight face when talking with Tom Wilson about that hit?   He can't possibly be serious can he??  It would have taken all my will power to not say "now you know how it feels".
Jason Mackey
1:10
Ha. Easier than you think. It's a job. I smiled inside when he said it because I knew he made my job that night way easier with a layup of a story. But he could say he thinks hockey should be played on the moon, barefoot. Doesn't matter to me. It's his opinion.

If Quebec City gets another NHL team, will it be the Nordiques again or a different name?      The Wild is a bad name for the Minnesota team isn't it?
Jason Mackey
1:10
I like the Wild, to be honest. And I hope so. Quebec City needs one. That place is awesome.

Will we see any wholesale line changes for the Pens next year to shake things up?
Jason Mackey
1:11
We'll see changes. It won't be to Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Hornqvist, Guentzel or Dumoulin. Believe that's all I'd put on the untouchable list.

Hey, did they actually film Sudden Death in Pittsburgh or was it filmed on a soundstage in HOLLYWOOD?
Jason Mackey

They filmed parts of it at Civic Arena.
