Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 03.07.19

In hindsight, do you believe the penguins regret not singing Bonino?
Jason Mackey
1:04
Hi Michael, no, I don't think they do. I think given his age and what he got from the Predators, the deal just didn't make sense for them. And with the player that Jared McCann can potentially be, I think they're right for thinking that.

What word do you hear the most from hockey players?
Jason Mackey
1:05
Ha. There's a lot of repeats. "Obviously." Or, if I can use two, "for sure."

Do you expect to see a shakeup in the front office given the failure to understand the CBA in regards to the Hagelin trade and also the relative mismanagement of WBS (signing too many veterans to start the year)?
Jason Mackey
1:06
I don't. Trust me, the Penguins weren't alone in missing this. And the goof in WBS earlier ... I don't think that's enough for a front office shakeup. I do think if GMJR decided to retire tomorrow, they would conduct a search rather than promoting Guerin. But that's not directly related to the two things you brought up.

Any idea why Malkin can't stop commiting dumb penalties?
Jason Mackey
1:14
If I had that answer, I would have packaged it and sold it to Dan Bylsma 10 years ago. It's just what Malkin does. He's done it his entire career. No, I don't have an answer. But I also wouldn't think for it to stop.

As you expand your media footprint, would you ever consider taking on a role like Dan Potash?  I think you may already have a pretty good rapport with the players, coach and GM to make it work.
Jason Mackey
1:17
I would like to think that those guys respect me or at least the effort I put in. As for Potash, he's a legend. I can strive to be like him, but that's it.

Did the Pens give Riley Sheahan a tribute last on Tuesday? Didn't see one on TV.
Jason Mackey
1:18
No, they did not. You have to win a Cup to get a tribute video.

I appreciate the reference in the Crosby selke article, although I'm a left winger with no D, but with some giddy up in my skating and a good scoring touch. No helmet for me though - old school and I'm exempt... Enjoyed the group trade deadline chat, any chance Dave M makes a guest appearance on here, maybe a playoff preview? Yes, being very positive re playoffs!
Jason Mackey
1:19
Cosmo, good to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed the trade deadline chat. It was very popular web-wise. I would love to get more involved with something like that, and I like the possibility of a playoff preview chat. I will check with my bosses on it. Thanks for the suggestion.

What do you think Pettersson's contract will look like? I know Rutherford mentioned they were extending him.
Jason Mackey
1:19
Hard to say. I could them doing in the Oleksiak range ... like $6 million over three. That's a real ballpark estimate, though. A lot can change between now and then.

Assuming the Pens can ever get fully healthy on the blueline, who is the odd man out?
Jason Mackey
1:21
Are we considering Olli healthy? If so, I'd think it looks like thisL Dumo-Letang ... Johnson-Schultz ... Maatta-Pettersson (could flip) ... that would put Gudbranson as the odd-man out.
JohnAl
1:21
What things would an outside hire be related to, if not how Guerin has handled WBS?
Jason Mackey
1:22
I should've worded that answer better. I think Guerin would be a candidate. I just think they would try to go big-time since the window to win is now. They would likely try to get someone with more experience. ... This is moot, though. As I understand it, GMJR has zero intention on leaving.
Cameron
1:22
Also, who's moving on D? Gudbranson, Johnson, or Maatta?
Jason Mackey
1:22
Moving where? Sides? Teams?
Cosmo K
1:22
As far as Kessel is concerned, Darren and I aren't terribly worried about him getting through his goal-scoring slump, after all he's a cancer survivor... I'm guessing that keeps things in perspective for him and is part of his semi care free attitude, right? (That's a Phil-ism, right?)
Jason Mackey
1:22
Forget any of that. Look at the chances Phil has gotten the past couple. Does anyone really expect him to NOT convert them for much longer?
Cody
1:22
When the d is all healthy how do you see the pairing shake out
Jason Mackey
1:23
Dumo-Letang ... Johnson-Schultz ... Maatta-Pettersson. ... I could also see them flipping Johnson and Maatta. Be careful about asking this, though, guys: I got this 400 times before Schultz came back, then everybody got hurt.

Do you think Sully will give Cullen some rest down the stretch?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Nah. That's not a concern at all, honestly. Cullen might be one of their best-conditioned players.

Fair to say the next 10 games are the most important of the season? 5 games against division opponents fighting for a playoff spot, and the other 5 are also against playoff teams. 4 of the last 6 games of the season are against bottom dweller teams. If we can come out of the next 10 at 6-4 or 7-3, I think our playoff chances look very good.
Jason Mackey
1:25
Yeah, I think that's fair. I hate saying "most important of the season," though because that could change during the final week, then those become the "most important of the season." But I get your point. It's a really big stretch coming up that should tilt things one way or the other.
Cosmo K
1:25
Was Pominville's shot and self block/save this week considered a shot on goal?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I don't know, Cosmo, sorry.
Laura

What's the mood in the room going into these two Columbus games?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Really light for the Penguins. They're in a good place. Columbus ... more tight than light.
Dan
1:26
Should two of the 13 forwards on the roster go down, who would be next in line to get the call up from WBS?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Two of the forwards on the roster aren't going to go down.

1:26
Any Black Aces that could contribute this year? Specifically FWD. When Horny briefly went down and with Rust out got me thinking about fwd depth ... thanks
Jason Mackey
1:27
Black Aces generally practice before, travel, get the experience, etc. You're not really looking for them to step into key roles. ... They have some guys -- Angello, Di Pauli, Lafferty -- who next year might compete for spots but not this season.
Franky
1:27
hey Jason, when do you think phil will break out of his slump? He is getting chances, but they have to go in eventually right?
Jason Mackey
1:27
I think Phil has a big game tonight, Franky.
