ARTHUR HILL

Welcome to this week's chat. We'll start with a question about Karl-Anthony Towns.
Anthony Edwards Hype Machine

KAT is flopping big time on the national stage. Does his performance in the WCF negatively affect his trade value in the eyes of rival GM's or is this a small sample size issue?
ARTHUR HILL
12:05
Towns hasn't enjoyed many memorable playoff moments during his nine years in the NBA, so the conference finals may be cementing a perception that he's never going to excel on that stage. I think the main thing hurting his trade value is his contract. He's owed $221MM over the next four seasons, and that's a lot to commit to a player when you aren't confident he can lead you to playoff success.

If you are the Hawks brass, who do you take at Number One?  My choice is Clingan to prop-up the interior defense and rebounding, espcecially given that Capela may be on the trade block.
ARTHUR HILL
12:09
If the Hawks are looking for a center to anchor their defense, they should look closely at Clingan before committing to Sarr. Sarr may be more versatile, but Clingan already has the size and bulk to compete with NBA big men. Atlanta may also be able to trade down a few spots and still have Clingan on the board.

Who is the front runner for the Lakers job? Will the Lakers interview terry stotts and Kenny Atkinson and Scott Brooks?
ARTHUR HILL
12:11
It's sounding more and more like J.J. Redick is going to be the choice for L.A. Atkinson may be headed to Cleveland, and a weekend report said Stotts is a potential candidate there as well.

On 05/21/24, you stated, “I expect the Wolves to win, but it won't be an easy series.” Do you still expect the Wolves to win?
ARTHUR HILL
12:13
The Wolves had the top-ranked defense in the league during the regular season, so I thought they would do a better job of controlling Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Give a lot of credit to them, and to the Mavericks in general, for solving the Wolves' D and taking over games in the closing minutes. And no, I don't expect Minnesota to overcome the 3-0 deficit.

Should I look to trade Ball before he is labeled injury prone and his value goes down? Who would interested in him?
ARTHUR HILL
12:16
I think Charlotte will give Ball at least one more season to prove that he can stay on the court and play winning basketball under the new coaching staff. If it doesn't happen next season, then they'll probably start to explore the trade market. There are always teams willing to take a chance on a talented young player who hasn't reached his full potential in his first NBA stop.
Golden State Worrier
12:17
What do you expect the Warriors to do with Chris Paul?
ARTHUR HILL
12:20
$30MM is too much for Paul next season given his age and level of production. The Warriors can't realistically keep that contract on their books considering their tax situation, and I don't see anyone being willing to trade for it. I expect Paul to be a free agent.
Not so dandy duo
12:20
Trae Young or Dejounte Murray..... will either of them get traded? Who would you keep?
ARTHUR HILL
12:23
I expect the Hawks to explore the trade market for both members of their backcourt. The ball-sharing plan they had in mind when they acquired Murray from the Spurs hasn't worked out, and it's time to commit to one or the other as the lead guard. I liked how Atlanta played during Young's late-season injury, and I think he could produce the better return from a team that needs a star.
Detroit Desperation
12:23
Who keeps there jobs in the front office and coaching staff once Langdon’s hiring is official? I hear Stewart is unhappy and wants out, what is best possible scenario on a return?
ARTHUR HILL
12:27
A weekend report indicated that GM Troy Weaver may be on the way out, and that might be for the best since he's not running the organization anymore. Detroit probably needs a coaching change as well to make a complete break from last season, but $67.5MM is a lot to pay Monty Williams just to go away.
Clint Capela
12:28
What kind of return would the Hawks receive if they traded Clint Capela? A crappy future 1st with lots of protections? A couple second round picks?
ARTHUR HILL
12:30
Capela is 30 with a limited offensive game, so Atlanta wouldn't get a lot in return. The move would be more about clearing a spot for their No. 1 pick. The draft compensation you suggest might be accurate, or maybe a veteran guard or wing player to help round out the rotation.
Draft trade
12:31
Any chance the Spurs would trade up with the Hawks for the number 1 pick? I'm sure Wembanyama would love another French guy next to him. The Hawks could get some of their own future picks back in the deal
ARTHUR HILL
12:33
With picks No. 4 and 8, the Spurs are a very strong candidate to move up in the draft. Sarr or Risacher would both be good additions to the roster and would help keep their franchise player happy.

What outside pieces should NYK target to get over the 2nd round hump? Thanks!
ARTHUR HILL
12:36
I like the Knicks' roster as it is. It was injuries, rather than a lack of talent, that kept them from reaching the conference finals. The front office has plenty of assets to go star hunting this summer, but unless they can someone who complements their current core -- not Donovan Mitchell or Trae Young for example -- they'll be fine bringing the same group back for next season.

12:36
In your opinion, is there anyway the Heat deal Herro and Butler in the offseason
ARTHUR HILL
12:38
Yes, Pat Riley loves to chase stars and I think he'll be willing to part with anyone other than Bam Adebayo. This year was probably a better indication than last season of what the future would look like if Miami tries to run it back with the same roster.

Is this the best chance Boston has to win this year since the east looks to be a lot stronger next year and no easy way to a championship like this year.
ARTHUR HILL
12:41
The Celtics have been at or near the top of the East for several seasons now, so they don't need an easy path to reach the finals. You never know how things are going to break in the playoffs, and it's not a surprise now when Joel Embiid or Giannis Antetokounmpo is injured in April. This may be the Celtics' best chance, but they'll have plenty more.

Adrian Griffin has been an assistant coach for five NBA teams. You stated, “And if there's an offer from Portland [to be an assistant coach], he should jump at the chance. All indications are that Chauncey Billups is on the way out soon.” Why would Chauncey Billups want Griffin to be a member of his staff?
ARTHUR HILL
12:45
I don't think it's up to Chauncey. He seems to have lost his influence in the organization, and his days in Portland appear to be numbered. Someone on his staff is likely to be the interim coach by midseason.

If the Cavs sign Mitchell to an extension, should they trade just Garland?  Or Garland and Allen?  Do you think they can turn those 2 players into good players that are a better fit?  What do you think they will/should do?
ARTHUR HILL
12:48
I think the new head coach is going to have some influence in the decision. If they hire someone who believes he can make a Mitchell-Garland backcourt work or the Allen-Mobley pairing up front, there's no rush to break up the current version of the team. I wouldn't be sure about Mitchell's long-term commitment to Cleveland even if he signs an extension -- he could always ask for a trade in a year or two -- so I would be very hesitant to part with Garland.

12:49
Too early in the rebuild for the spurs to make a move for garland or Murray?
ARTHUR HILL
12:50
Not at all. Finding an experienced point guard should be a priority this summer, and I think either of those players would benefit from playing with Wembanyama. Particularly Garland, who could emerge as a star in the right setting.
Dylan
12:51
this Playoffs prove that seeding doesn’t matter but instead matchups matter more?
ARTHUR HILL
12:53
Matchups and injuries. The Celtics probably win the East regardless, but the West could have turned out much differently if the pairings were changed.

12:54
The Memphis Grizzlies have asked Coach Taylor Jenkins to make several changes to his coaching staff so it seems that he's on the hot seat.  With Morant and the other injured players coming back, what type of season and what round in the playoffs do you think Jenkins needs to have to keep his job?
ARTHUR HILL
12:56
I think the Grizzlies expect to be what they were before all the injuries and Morant's suspensions, which is a top four team that can at least reach the conference semifinals. It's going to be tougher than ever with Dallas, Minnesota, Denver and OKC at the top of the West, and even that might not be enough to prevent a coaching change.

So much hate for Julius randle but knicks played so well for the brief period when Randle OG and brunson all played. Why is everyone 1. Discounting him or 2. Saying he's got to go?
ARTHUR HILL
12:57
He's a polarizing figure and the Knicks played well without him, but he's also an All-Star for a team that doesn't really have another post-up scorer. I would only trade him to get a bigger star and a better fit in return.
