Is trade going happen for Harden soon?
Dana Gauruder
12:04
Kind of like asking who's going to win the 3rd race at Santa Anita on Friday. I can only offer an educated guess -- I don't think the Sixers can expect Harden to play nice for very long. Perhaps Morey is hoping for or getting interest from another team. Few people would have guessed in July or August that Lillard would wind up in Milwaukee instead of Miami. On the surface, I would accept the reported Clippers offer -- first rounder, pick swap, expiring contracts -- if I were Morey. Doubt he'll get much more for Harden than that. We'll do a Community Shootaround on this topic tonight and see what our readers think will happen.

Great game between two rising starts last night. I hope both stay healthy be nice story for NBA.

I don't pay much attention to preseason games but that just validated what everyone already knew -- VW and Holmgren will be impact players from the get go. Holmgren could perhaps even challenge him for Rooke of the Year -- he'll be on a better team. But those guys will be penennial All-Stars as long as they stay healthy.

It's time to way overreact to tiny sample sizes! The Raptors look way more settled with Schroeder at the point than anyone should have expected. Chances of them outperforming their projections this year?
12:08
Vezenkov looked really comfortable in his first preseason action. He doesn't help much with Sacramento's weaknesses, but they need another guy who can finish confidently in clutch moments. Can he step into that role?
Dana Gauruder
12:12
Again, I don't glean much from preseason games. Coaches are experimenting and tinkering with various combinations and the players are just getting their legs back. Schroder is a good player but he's not FVV. That's why Schroder has kind of bounced around in the last few years. That simply looked like a stopgap move by the front office. Toronto was hoping to do something more drastic (Lillard) but couldn't pull it off. As for Vezenkov, he was a Euro MVP. He should have an impact but the Kings are kind of easing him in. He came in during the second half and put up some points. I do think he'll bull his way into the second unit but he wasn't one of the first five guys off the bench. I think that will change in a hurry.

Thoughts on Peyton Watson as a breakout candidate?
Dana Gauruder
12:14
The opportunity is there for the taking. Malone basically said the second unit spots are up for grabs. You know Braun is going to play a ton. After that, it's kind of up in the air. You look at the depth chart with Green out of the picture -- who is his competition -- Tyson? I have to believe Watson will be a 20-minute player this season. He certainly has the confidence from the comments he's made recently to the media.

Jason Kidd's name is the answer most frequently provided to the question, "What head coach is on the hot seat if their team gets off to a slow start?"  Outside of the coaches on his staff such as Darrell Armstrong, Jared Dudley, and Alex Jensen, what other names do you believe should be possible replacements?
Dana Gauruder
12:16
One guy who immediately comes to mind is Budenholzer. Maybe things went sour for him in Milwaukee but he's got a recent championship on his resume. That gives you all kinds of credibility.

From looks of the 1st Warrior preseason game Rudy Gay has the inside track for the open 14th spot on the team? I say they keep the 15th spot open for most of the season.do you agree?
Dana Gauruder
12:20
Once again, i wouldn't read too much into one or two preseason games. However, Gay is the kind of veteran that would seem like a good fit for the Warriors, even if it's just more of a mentoring role for their young bigs. The Warriors have incentive to keep the last roster spot open -- for financial reasons, as well as adding a player down the road. With three two-way players instead of two now, I am surprised more teams aren't thinking in those terms.

In 2019, John Collins, Wilson Chandler, and Deandre Ayton were each suspended 25 games for testing positive for various substances.  With the new CBA, the NBA will conduct no more than 1,925 total urine tests, up from the 1,525 from the last CBA.  What are your thoughts on the rare positive test (Didi Louzada) since 2019?
Dana Gauruder
12:24
Wow, you've really read up on the new CBA. Well, they are no longer penalizing marijuana use. As for banned substances, I don't see that as being an advantage for an NBA as it was for all those MLB players who were jacking out homers until the crackdown. I don't think PEDs would improve your jump shot, so that seems to be a minor issue for the league at this point. Interesting that they are conducting more tests, I was unaware of that.

it looks like hornets most likely kit Kia Jones after his summer antics and now requesting a trade.  Do they fill the roster spot with a serviceable big man or make a trade (say Gordon Hayward) and get a couple young players in return?  What other options do they have to add new faces?
Dana Gauruder
12:28
Was Kai Jones even in the rotation plans minus those antics? He really hasn't established himself as a rotation player in his first two seasons, even with Bridges not playing last year. What kind of market is there for Jones? Doubt there is one. They may just end up waiving him but I don't think it will impact whether they trade Hayward.

Who do you think will have a better career. Wemby or Holmgren. That spurs  thunder preseason game was fun to watch last night.
Dana Gauruder
12:29
In the long run, VW. That being said, I'd love to take Holmgren as a consolation prize.

On September 29th, Luka Doncic stated, “I think Grant [Williams] is a good leader too, he talks a lot.  Sometimes too much.”  This quote makes me laugh so much.  First because it was said on 09/29.  Too much on 09/29.  Second, if Grant Williams responded by saying, "Luka complains to the referees a lot.  Sometimes too much."  Do you believe Grant Williams will remain a Dallas Maverick by the trade deadline or will he be dealt next offseason?
Dana Gauruder
12:32
That was just some good natured needling between teammates. Seems like they're getting along quite well. And they're right on both counts! The Mavs were interested enough in Williams to do a sign and trade for him, so unless they have an opportunity to acquire a star and need to include Williams in the deal, I see Williams a major part of their plans going forward.

Given Portland's new roster, who do you think are keepers and who is likely to be trade bait? It seems Simons might be a poor fit next to Scoot for defensive reasons. Though that's never stopped the Blazers in the past.
Dana Gauruder
12:37
Well, they went out of their way to get Ayton. Henderson should end up being the face of their franchise. Beyond that, they'll use this season to evaluate how their other young pieces fit. I don't see Grant being there for the life of his contract -- he doesn't fit their timeline. Brogdon could be on the move to a team needing a guard at the trade deadline. Strictly in terms of Simons/Sharpe, I don't think you can evaluate who is better fit next to Henderson until you have a much larger sample size.

In the 48 games that Robert Covington played last season, the Clippers record was 20-28.  In the 34 games that he did not play in, the Clippers record was 24-10.  When Ty Lue was asked about the depth of the roster and sacrifice for minutes. He stated that Robert Covington deserved to play "a little bit more last year, and that's my fault."  Whose minutes do you believe Ty Lue should sacrifice this season in order for Covington to play more, Leonard, George, Morris, Batum?
Dana Gauruder
12:39
I did see that comment from Lue. I don't think it impacts the minutes of Leonard or George -- those are your stars. Batum still seems like the de facto starter at PF, unless Lue decides to go small more often. So, I'd think Covington would cut more into Morris' minuts.

12:39
Why not just start Herro? I know Lowry wants to, but he flourished coming off the bench in the later part of the season and playoffs.
Dana Gauruder
12:41
That's what the coaching staff has to decide but naturally, Lowry has been a starter most of his career while Herro has a Sixth Man award. So, he's not going to feel uncomfortable providing instant offense off the bench.
PistonsPalooza
12:41
The Pistons roster construction is a mess. To many bigs and PGs and not one legitimate PF on the roster. What kind of trades could they make to fix it?
Dana Gauruder
12:45
They committed to Stewart with that extension and I don't see him playing the 5 a whole bunch with Duren and Wiseman in the mix. They've got Bagley there, too, and he has seemingly worked his way into Williams' plans. Add in Livers once he returns from his latest injury. I don't see them doing anything drastic -- they will probably move Bogdanovic at some point for an asset but for now they justs want to see the young core (Cade, Ivey, Thompson, Duren, Stewart) jell.
Knick fan
12:45
If Knicks can get a lottery first for Quickley, do they do it? Or do they pay him 4 years, $110?
Dana Gauruder
12:49
He really emerged as a valuable piece last season and there was optimism going into camp that an extension would get done. I haven't seen anything to refute that. If the Knicks are serious about being a contender, why would you trade a good young player for a future first round pick at this point?
Boring Town
12:49
Does Portland have a reasonable chance to make the play-in tournament this season?
Dana Gauruder
12:53
No. That would be a huge surprise. Of the 10 teams who made the postseason, which of them will fall? The Lakers, TWolves, Thunder, Pelicans were in the play in last season -- you could argue all of those teams could finish in the top six this season. And then you've got teams like the Mavs and Jazz, who should challenge for a playoff spot. Portland is more likely to finish with the worst record in the West than get into the play-in.
Bulls
12:53
Can the Bulls be a playoff team they made lots of underrated moves in Jevon Carter and Torey Craig will that be enough?
Dana Gauruder
12:56
Of course the Bulls could be a playoff team. They've still got LaVine, DeRozan, Vucevic, etc. Plus, they know from the start that Ball is out of the picture this season. They did make the play in last season. Finishing in the top six and avoiding the play-in will be a much tougher task but it's not out of the question.

12:57
Will Jordan Poole star in D.C. or is he gonna bust without the Golden State roster around him?
Dana Gauruder
12:58
He'll get plenty of playing time there. There are no Currys or Thompsons to compete with for minutes. So statistically, his base numbers will go up (points, assists). Remains to be seen whether he can improve his advanced numbers on what could be the worst team in the league.

Raptors look like a team that needs a lot of things to go right this year. What are your thoughts?
Dana Gauruder
1:00
They'll have Poeltl for a full season but I don't see how you subtract FVV and get better. Plus, the constant rumors regarding Siakam/Anunoby are an ongoing distractions. No, I don't see the Raptors as a major contender -- more likely to finish in the play-in tourney than a top six spot.
