Luke Adams

Thanks for all the early questions, guys! Let's dive in...
Joe
12:16
Could you see a 3-team deal involving Thybulle to Nuggets, a bench shooter to Philly, and a third team picking up Bones? Who could be part of that deal?
Luke Adams
12:17
I like the idea in theory, though it's hard to come up with a good match for the third team. There aren't many decent shooters at that price point that teams are willing to give up. Maybe you call Indiana to ask about one of Chris Duarte, Aaron Nesmith, or Oshae Brissett? I also think Denver would want more, given that Hyland has 2.5 years left on his contract and Thybulle is a free agent this summer.

12:18
Who has the best chance at landing OG Annunoby? And what would the framework of the deal look like?
Luke Adams
12:20
Teams like the Pelicans, Grizzlies, Knicks, and Suns make the most sense to me. Those teams have all their own first-round picks (plus some extras, in every instance except Phoenix), and have the necessary pieces to salary-match. Plus, they're all solid playoff/play-in clubs who could really benefit from a two-way wing like Anunoby.
Buyout Candidates
12:20
Are you guys going to produce a List of Buyout Candidates?  Or wait until after the Trade Deadline to do so ?
Luke Adams
12:20
That'll probably happen shortly after the trade deadline. Every buyout candidate is still a trade candidate at this point.

Is John Collins contract making him harder to trade? Or is Atlanta just being picky with its suitors?
Luke Adams
12:22
It feels like there's just a real divide between the Hawks and their potential trade partners on how much value Collins has. The Hawks consider him a really strong asset, while most other teams view him as something closer to a neutral/slightly positive asset. If the Hawks aren't willing to compromise on their view and can't convince another team to buy into it, we could see Collins remain in Atlanta for a while longer yet.

I’m playing very well and play either guard and am scrappy on defense.  So many around the league love me as well. Should I  contact my real estate agent and list my home?  I’m ready to go to a contender and have several years of good play ahead of me.
Luke Adams
12:24
The fact that you have three years left on your contract beyond this season makes me think you're more likely than not to still be in Charlotte after the deadline. Maybe the Hornets get an offer they like, but it might be easier to extract value in the offseason, when more teams have cap flexibility and another year of draft picks is trade-eligible.
Twolves
12:24
What can the timberwolves hope for in trade for Russel? Possibly recoup a 1st?
Luke Adams
12:26
They're not getting a 1st for Russell unless they take back a contract that's worse. Even then, there aren't many scenarios that make sense. D-Lo is one of those players who is more valuable to his current team on the court than he is on the trade market, since his cap hit is so high (and he might be a rental) -- I think it'll be hard to find a deal that makes sense for Minnesota.

After the Pacers extended Myles Turner, what do their trade deadline plans look like now?
Luke Adams
12:28
Good question. I can't imagine why they wouldn't be willing to listen on most of their non-Haliburton/Mathurin/Turner players, starting with Buddy Hield and Daniel Theis. It sounds like Goga Bitadze would welcome a change of scenery too. But it could end up being a quiet deadline for the Pacers, at least relative to what seemed possible a few months ago (when a Turner + Hield blockbuster was still on the table).

Not sure why Bones Hyland is being shopped. Defense not great yet, but you need bench scoring + cheap deal + lots of potential. Booth shouldn't get too cute with this
Luke Adams
12:30
It sounds like there may be some tension between Bones and the coaching staff in Denver related to his role and playing time. Plus, the Nuggets believe they're in position to seriously contend for a title this season with another piece. Those are compelling reasons to see what you can get for him.

I feel like the Jazz trading Jarred Vanderbilt should be off the table unless he fetches a massive haul. He's a fantastic multi-positional defender who is a positive on offense, and he's a team-first guy. You're not likely to get a guy as good as him with a late first. Am I wrong to feel that way?
Luke Adams
12:32
The tricky thing is that his contract expires after next season. The Jazz aren't going to be a real threat to be contend in a year -- by the time they reach that level, Vanderbilt will be at least on his next contract, which will likely be a lot more expensive than his current one. So does it make sense to keep him and pay him, or trade him now and hope that the assets you get for him line up better with your contention timeline?

How will I approach the deadline? How should I approach the deadline?
Luke Adams
12:34
You'll face some criticism for playing hardball with teams that want to acquire Bojan Bogdanovic or Alec Burks, but I don't hate that stance -- both guys are under contract beyond this season, so you'll have another chance to trade them in the summer if you want to. Just be careful -- it's risky to bet on players in their 30s who are having career years maintaining their trade value indefinitely (just ask the Rockets, who probably should've traded Eric Gordon before now if they wanted to maximize his value).

12:35
What can Portland realistically fetch with Nurkic's contract? Whose a reasonable trade partner with them?
Luke Adams
12:37
Even though Nurkic is in the first year of a four-year contract and D-Lo is on an expiring deal, they sort of remind me of one another in that it'll be hard to get more value for them on the trade market than they're providing on the court right now. If the Wolves trade Russell, they'll still need a point guard. If the Blazers trade Nurkic, they'll still need a center. So is there a trade partner out there who wants someone like Nurkic and would give the Blazers an upgrade at center? It's hard to come up with one.
not a Kerr fan
12:38
Steve Kerr has said that James Wiseman is the Team's " 4th Center ".  Are you kidding me?  Draymond and JaMychal are NOT Centers.  Kevon Looney is barely a Center at 6-foot-9.  I think Kerr doesn't want to learn how to incorporate a 7 Footer into his Offensive scheme.  He's turned into Don Nelson.  Well, good luck guarding Anthony Davis, DeAndre Ayton, etc with a bunch of Midgets.
Luke Adams
12:39
I've been getting this sort of message from Warriors fans in these chats dating back to last year, before they won a title. They've proven that Green and Looney can get it done in big moments. There's no guarantee Ayton and Davis will even be in the playoffs!

12:40
What trade if any do you predict I’ll make before the deadline?
Luke Adams
12:41
It seems like we get a Bucks/Crowder rumor every few days -- there's certainly a lot of smoke there, and I believe that could turn into fire (think I'm using this metaphor wrong) if the Suns get a bit more realistic about their asking price.
Who's Fabio
12:42
Just curious, does Tim Dierkes own all the rumour sites for the 4 major sports?
Luke Adams
12:42
He does, though he's not an NBA expert by any means, so he mostly lets us do our own thing over here and just runs the business side.

If someone offered kuzma 24million per year, Should tommy matched the offer? Or trade kuzma now and get a multiple 1st round picks or just one 1st round pick and a young player? Kuzma to pacers, Kuzma to kings, Kuzma to warriors and Kuzma to NYK seems a good deal?
Luke Adams
12:45
It's impossible to know at this point what sort of offers Kuzma might get in the offseason, but every report in the last few weeks suggests the Wizards feel good about their chances of retaining him and don't want to trade him. $24MM feels slightly high to me, but it's not out of the question. I suspect the Wizards would go that high, though I'm not sure it's a great idea.
Chicago Joe
12:46
I read that the Bulls discussed a Coby White for Jae Crowder trade with Phoenix, and that they discussed trades with Portland (who are sellers) though the players discussed were not specified.  It seems like the Bulls are buying, when clearly they should be selling right?
Luke Adams
12:48
It doesn't sound like the Bulls' front office is ready to throw in the towel on this core until they get resolution on Lonzo Ball (either he comes back and their group is whole, or they determine he's not coming back and they won't get to see this group all together). I guess I understand that. LaVine's on a long-term deal, DeRozan's under contract for another year, and you can probably get Vucevic back at a similar price, so if you want to blow it up, you could still do it at some point within the next 12 months.

I have read that the Lakers could bring Russ back at a heavily discounted rate next year...how much does he get?
Luke Adams
12:49
We'll see how the rest of the season goes, but I could see him getting $15-20MM per year. Especially if the Lakers operate over the cap.

12:50
Kendrick Nunn does actually look like a positive for the Wizards. He's been playing well in his few games so far. How likely is he to stick around for a piece of the mid-level?
Luke Adams
12:51
They'll have his Early Bird rights, so they wouldn't need to use any of the mid-level to bring him back. We'll see though. It's only been three games so far, and they'll have other options to consider in the offseason. He's looking like he could be more than just a salary-matching piece in that Hachimura trade though.
Joe
12:51
Bones for Vanderbilt? Who says no? is it a start?
Luke Adams
12:52
I like it for the Nuggets more than for the Jazz. That's certainly the type of player Denver would be looking for in a Hyland trade. Utah would probably want a sweetener.
