Thanks for all your early questions, guys. Let's get chatting!
2-Way contract Rules
12:00
Can players on 2-Way Contracts be Traded to other Teams?  I don't believe I have seen that happen.  Wondering if they can only be Traded for other Players on 2-Way Contracts .......
Luke Adams
12:02
They can be traded, but it hardly ever happens. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is the Warriors getting Julian Washburn, who was on a two-way at the time, in their Andre Iguodala salary dump with Memphis during the 2019 offseason. Dallas might've done a two-way trade at some point too, but I can't recall the details.
They essentially function like draft picks in a trade -- no salary considerations or anything like that.
Pacers
12:03
with this good of a team and 3 first round picks as trade bait, who can we realistically trade for?
Luke Adams
12:05
I'd be surprised if the Pacers gave up any draft assets for win-now help. Maybe they'll be less inclined to become sellers, given how well they've played, but I think it's too early in their rebuilding process to do any sort of future-for-present deals, despite their excess of 2023 picks.
If anything, I could see them trading one or two of those 2023 first-rounders for a future first-round pick and then eventually using that pick to get an impact guy. But I don't think they're at that stage yet.

What kind of return would there be for Dorian Finney-Smith? He and Bullock are redundant and he has been playing out of position for the Mavs, when healthy, as a stretch 4.
Luke Adams
12:08
I suspect the Mavs like Finney-Smith too much to trade him this season unless it's necessary as part of a package for an impact guy. He'd have real value as a trade chip -- his shooting numbers have dipped a little this year, but he has proven he can be a reliable three-and-D player and his contract is pretty team-friendly. They could probably get a first-round pick for him.
Knicks 71pts
12:09
Ok now I wish we had Spida. That said - OKC - SGA - I’ve got quickly, toppin reddish some salary and all our acquired picks + 1 unprotected of my own. Deal or No Deal?
Luke Adams
12:10
Thunder would say no. Due to the relatively heavy protections on those picks the Knicks have traded for, that package wouldn't be considered as valuable as the one Utah got for Gobert or even for Mitchell -- the Thunder would want at least a Gobert/Mitchell-type package, and even then, I'm not sure they have any interest in trading SGA.

Does any team in the East have enough Size to slow down Joel Embiid ?  He's as dominant this year as Shaq was in his glory years.
Luke Adams
12:13
Cleveland might give him some trouble, with Allen and Mobley up front. His game against the Cavs was one of his worst of the season (19 points, 6-of-16 shooting). Of course, we've seen the Sixers lose some huge Embiid games this year, and if Harden/Maxey are playing well, they're capable of winning when he's not scoring 30 or 40.

With a new owner coming to Phoenix do you see the suns loosening their purse strings and potentially taking on some salary (say John Collins) to upgrade the roster before the deadlne
Luke Adams
12:16
As I wrote in our story on the Suns' trade/ownership situation about a half-hour ago, Robert Sarver will likely still have veto power on deadline moves, but there's no compelling reason (in my opinion) for him to avoid taking on more salary -- unless he's not 100% sure about the deal with Mat Ishbia going through. I haven't seen any reason to be concerned about the sale, but who knows what Sarver will be thinking.

How do 30 teams that all each have flaws and weaknesses go 2+ months without making a single trade? I'm stunned how passive NBA GM's have become.
Luke Adams
12:18
The sellers have no reason to lower their prices now and the buyers know that the prices will be more favorable when the deadline gets closer. It's a little surprising that we haven't seen any deals yet, but there's a reason why most of the in-season action happens within a week or so of the deadline -- not much urgency until then.
Some Guy
12:18
Pacers or Kings more likely to add a piece in a trade out of the unlikely playoff squads?
Luke Adams
12:18
Definitely the Kings. The Pacers' leadership probably wouldn't mind getting another lottery pick this season. The Kings badly want to snap their playoff drought.
OG
12:19
Related to the earlier question, my friend is a Pacers fan and one thing they really lack is size and defense on the wing. Nesmith has been playing well, but he's 6'5". What would it take to trade for OG Anunoby? I know Zach Lowe said it would take a lot but he's been really high on Anunoby forever and I don't think what he speculated (close to the Mitchell return) is realistic at all. Then again, the Wolves got a boatload of stuff for a 30 year old center with an albatross contract, so who knows.
Luke Adams
12:21
I think I'm with Zach on this one -- OG would cost a lot. He's one of the best defensive players in the league, and you could easily talk yourself into him having a higher offensive ceiling than what he's shown so far, having been stuck in the Raptors' ineffective half-court offense. His contract is very fair as well, though he'll need a new one in 2024.
12:22
Do I think it would take the equivalent of Markkanen, three unprotected picks, two swaps, Sexton, and a lottery pick (Agbaji)? No. But you're not just getting Anunoby for a couple protected first-rounders either.

The current beat up iteration of the Suns is a mess. Do you see them making the playoffs as part of the play in tournament or do you see them seeding higher?
Luke Adams
12:24
If Booker and Johnson are both back by the end of the month, I still see them as a top-six team in the West. Especially if they can trade Crowder sooner rather than later and get something worthwhile in return. If Booker's absence extends into February and it takes until the deadline to find a Crowder deal, they could be in trouble. The West is pretty tough this year.
10-Day Contracts
12:25
Do 10-Day Contracts count against a Team's salary cap and Luxury Tax ?   Also, is January 5th the first day that Teams can start Signing free agent Players to fill Holes ?
Luke Adams
12:26
They do count against the cap and tax, yes. Last season, the NBA ruled that hardship 10-day contracts signed due to COVID cases didn't count for cap purposes, but I don't know if they carried that rule over or not -- obviously the NBA's COVID situation isn't as bad as it was a year ago.
12:27
Teams have been able to sign FAs all season, but they can sign 10-days starting Thursday, yes. I don't expect to see a sudden flurry of them, but the Hornets are one team that could benefit -- they're nowhere near the tax and signing guys for 10 days at a time won't prevent them from saving the 15th spot for Bridges.

Does De Aaron fox deserve an all star spot or will he be a snub this season?
Luke Adams
12:29
The Kings deserve at least one All-Star, but I think it might be Sabonis rather than Fox. I haven't sat down and tried to pick 12 players yet though, so maybe I'll like Fox's chances more once I go through that process. The fact that some top Western guards have gotten hurt might work in his favor.
Nate McMillan
12:29
Should I be worried about my job? Hawks keep losing close games and I have no creativity running this offense.
Luke Adams
12:30
Yeah, if things don't improve in Atlanta, I suspect you might be out of work before May.

12:30
What are the Suns trying to get for Jae Crowder? It just doesnt make sense to me that he still has not been traded
Luke Adams
12:31
Based on some of the reports that have surfaced, it sounds like they're trying to use a Crowder deal to address multiple issues -- acquiring a power forward and acquiring one more wing shooter (or upgrading on Shamet). For instance, there was one rumor about them discussing Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt with Utah. It seems like they're trying to exhaust all those bigger scenarios before resorting to a 1-for-1 type deal.

Good as Bruce Brown has been for Denver, due to cap rules, they have virtually no chance to re-sign him. Do they consider trading him for someone they can hang onto for a few years?
Luke Adams
12:33
I wouldn't be so sure they won't be able to re-sign him. Brown has gotten less on the free agent market than I expected in each of the last two years -- there's no guarantee that a rival suitor's going to get super aggressive in 2023. Plus, given how much praise the Nuggets have heaped on Brown this year, I wouldn't be shocked if he's willing to take a bit less to stay in Denver, where he knows he's appreciated.
Lamb
12:34
Both of the Warriors two-way players, Lamb and Jerome have been major contributors. They only have one open roster spot. Do you see them either cutting J. Green who has been a disappointment when healthy or making some other move to free up a roster spot?
Luke Adams
12:36
If they've lost confidence in JaMychal Green, I think it'd be pretty easy to trade him in a salary-dump deal. They could attach cash to essentially cover his remaining (minimum) salary, and there might be another team willing to bet that a change of scenery will help him.
Fargus
12:36
Do you think the ridiculous price MIN paid for Gobert has anything to do with the lack of trades this year?
Luke Adams
12:37
Not really. Maybe that deal will make teams think twice before giving up five first-round picks for someone, but most trades aren't anything like that. For what it's worth, we didn't get our first trade last season until January 3.
12:38
(BTW, the first two trades last season, on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4: Rajon Rondo to Cleveland in what was essentially a salary dump, and Miye Oni to the Thunder in what was absolutely a salary dump.)
