Giants' Outlook '23

Anthony Franco
6:58
Hey everyone, hope you're having a great evening!
6:59
Looking forward to talking Giants for an hour, think they're in for a really interesting offseason
Anthony Franco
7:00
Hi my name is also Anthony Franco
Anthony Franco
7:00
Good start here haha
Farhan
7:00
Do I FINALLY move away from the reclamation projects and give the fans players to root/buy jerseys for because they're here for the long term?
Anthony Franco
7:02
Yeah they have to. They tried last offseason and just came up short, but Zaidi's openly discussing how they need to change their approach and there's a lot of payroll space because they missed on Judge and Correa
7:03
For Zaidi personally, it also just has to be time to go for it. He's on a one-year deal, they've changed managers, they've made the playoffs once in his tenure. There's probably not a whole lot of leash left so the front office should be less risk averse this offseason
The Dude
7:03
What young players are you most excited about and think will contribute the most next year?
Anthony Franco
7:05
Luciano's the most exciting but it could be pretty rough in year one with how often he struck out in the minors. If you're including Bailey in here, obviously he'll be a key contributor. I expect Kyle Harrison to hold a rotation spot all year and generally pitch pretty well
Keith
7:05
Is there anyone on our internal FA list we should really keep outside of Cobb?
Anthony Franco
7:05
If they wanted to throw like 2/8 at John Brebbia, that'd be fine. I agree that the bulk of the free agent class should probably walk
Quinn
7:06
Do the Giants sign Ohtani? Because I feel like they have a good shot to do so based on Ohtaini's free agency from 2018.
Jesse H
7:06
What are the chances the Giants go after both Trout and Ohtani?
Anthony Franco
7:06
Two of a million Ohtani questions, predictably
7:08
I expect the Giants will make a legitimate run at Ohtani. They'd be in my top three likeliest teams to land him. Are they above, say, the Dodgers or Texas? I don't know. Even if the money's right, they have to sell themselves as similarly positioned to compete long-term as teams like that are set up
7:09
Bellinger feels likelier to me since that's a little less competitive, but I'd be surprised if they didn't sign one of those two players
7:10
As for Trout, I still doubt he's traded. Even if it's probably the best decision for the Angels if Ohtani walks, that'd require Halos' ownership to relinquish both Ohtani and Trout in the same offseason -- and in this hypothetical, to the same team. I can't see Arte Moreno doing that
Jesse H
7:10
Was Haniger a bad signing?
Anthony Franco
7:11
Thought it was fine value at the time. Not a steal or anything, but right around the money we expected. Obviously didn't look good in year one, but that's in part because he had a fluke injury that broke his arm and knocked him out for two months

Is Casey Schmitt an every day major leaguer??  In 2024?  2025??
Anthony Franco
7:13
I think it's within the range of outcomes long-term but don't believe the Giants are positioned to give him that shot next season. The offensive approach got exposed last year. Unless they think he can handle shortstop -- judging by Zaidi's comments, he's behind Luciano in that regard -- he has to start back in the minors
Rick
7:13
1st basemen that will be available via trade ? Andrew Vaughan?
Anthony Franco
7:15
Sox probably hold Vaughn. Not clear that he's a better player than LaMonte Wade anyways, he has kind of stalled out. Could see Cleveland moving Josh Naylor. Alonso and Goldschmidt don't seem like offseason trade possibilities but could be available next summer if their teams are out of it

Should Yaz be extended? I think we need to refocus towards athleticism and versatility.
Anthony Franco
7:16
He's 33, still under arbitration control for two more years, and is a good but hardly irreplaceable player. I wouldn't extend him and I'd at least be open to trade possibilities if it gets them a starter or (less likely) a potential starting shortstop
Thriller
7:17
Any trade value for Joey Bart?  Any teams that might be interested to give something back?
Anthony Franco
7:18
Should be some trade value but it's marginal. Believe I mentioned the Yankees and Marlins in the post. Colorado could work, Boston or Tampa Bay perhaps
Scott
7:18
Did Conforto or Manaea actually play well enough to opt out?
Anthony Franco
7:19
I think Manaea did well enough to get two years at a similar salary to what he's making now. Conforto was just ok. He could beat $18MM over multiple seasons but he's not getting that annually over two or three years so I expect he'll stay and hope for a rebound offensive showing in '24
Nicholas
7:20
What, do you think, are the chances the Giants sign Yamamoto?
Anthony Franco
7:21
Wouldn't put any specific team at more than 20% or so since we don't know anything about his preferences. It'd be atypical for this front office and I think a bat should be the priority, but if they miss on the top two free agents, Yamamoto fits there well enough
Joe
7:21
What impact bats are really out there besides Ohtani and Bellinger? It seems like most FA wouldn't be significant upgrades. And I think it's time to say goodbye to Joc and Wood, agreed?
Anthony Franco
7:22
There aren't any, at least in free agency. I guess Teoscar Hernández could be an impact bat but the Giants are already deep in corner outfielders and should be getting more athletic in the outfield
7:23
Similarly light on the trade front. No obvious candidates since all the rebuilding teams have basically stripped the roster to the studs at this point. There's a long shot chance the Rays trade Arozarena or something.

Are the Giants going to go with a true youth movement next year?  Fitzgerald and/or Matos over Slater? Schmitt over J.D. Davis at 3rd?  Stick with Bailey at C vs signing a vet?  Luciano s the every day SS?  Etc.
Anthony Franco
7:25
No I don't think they're going this far. Relying on 3-4 rookies as primary starters means you're accepting there's a strong chance the team isn't going to compete. I don't see the organization or front office being in position to do that
7:26
Bailey will be the catcher. Luciano could get the shortstop job, though I think it's more a reflection of the dismal market at the position than him necessarily being ready. I don't expect Casey Schmitt to start at third base
Mr. Lucky
7:26
In regards to Luciano, the article mentioned that he had been patient at the plate. Does a high K rate coupled with patience mean he was called out looking a lot? Did he have a high chase rate? Thanks Anthony.
Anthony Franco
7:28
Should've spelled this out better in the post. He takes a lot of pitches but a) there's some called strikes that go with it, as you mentioned and b) a lot of swing-and-miss on pitches inside the strike zone. The latter is the tougher thing to fix in one offseason, especially without much experience above Double-A
QUEUEDB
7:28
do you think the 107 win season was the beginning of the end for Kapler (and potentially eventually Zaidi)? High expectations to live up to when that roster really wasn't close to complete
