OK, everyone, let's get our chat started....

Great chat as always, with the Steelers cutting Mitchell,Golden and Gay, could Alambam's Harrison be the No1 pick?
Gerry Dulac
1:00
Sure, it's possible.

The Steelers need a splash player on defense after losing Shazier. Mathieu says it’s not about money and he wants to be on a winner and concentrate on football. The Steelers need a safety and need to figure out a way to get him!
Gerry Dulac
1:01
He would be a tremendous addition, but I do believe it will be about the money.

Is Russ Grimm still coaching
Gerry Dulac
1:02
He was in Tennessee. Not sure if he survived the regime change

Hey Gerry, what is your opinion on the guaranteed money in many of the recent contracts? Is this the future of NFL deals?
Gerry Dulac
1:02
It's been going on to some degree for a while, just not as much now. Yes, that will be the future I'm sure. Once the horse is out of the barn....

What do you think about Tyrann "Honey Bear" Mathieu coming in to play safety for the Steelers on a cap friendly contract?
Gerry Dulac
1:03
I'm not so sure they can get him on a cap-friendly contract. If they could, tho, it would be a tremendous addition. He is a difference-maker player
Ryan
1:03
Do you know if the Steelers have even made contact with Tyrann Mathieu? Seems like he's at least be worth a look.
Gerry Dulac
1:04
I'm sure they will take a look and do their due dilligence, at the very least.

Good afternoon Gerry.... great to see Phil and Tiger doing well, just like old times. Do you think the Honey badger may consider coming here?
Gerry Dulac
1:04
Maybe. At least until he hears about the money

Are the Steelers actively pursuing Tyrann Mathieu? Do you think he would be an ideal fit based on his style of play?
Gerry Dulac
1:05
He would be a really good fit for all the reasons i just enumerated. He is a big-play safety who can play all over the field.

I'm a little surprised at the Steelers cleaning house in the secondary ... though not displeased. The question is: after giving Bell more than they have to give, how and with what are they going to restock? They can't find all they need in the draft ... and Mike Hilton was dumb luck. (Note to Bob Labriola: Walter Payton and Barry Sanders were great players. Leveon Bell? ... not even close.)
Gerry Dulac
1:07
I'm not. Why keep the same players who keep producing the same non-results? And they don't have to re-stock a lot, just a key player at ILB and safety
Kris
1:07
Since Bell is continually talking about how he is "betting on himself", why not make a clause in the contract that would guarantee the money he wants IF he can stay healthy, not get suspended, etc? I think having a clause like that may make it easier for both sides to agree to terms.
Gerry Dulac
1:07
Nobody can guarantee a player can stay healthy, so that will never happen
Kris
1:08
At one point mid-season, ESPN was talking about the Steelers having a legit, elite defense. After Shazier went down, things also went down for our D. That really shows the importance of his presence to the team. How do we replace him? Or do you think he is irreplaceable? In terms of his speed, athleticism, etc.
Gerry Dulac
1:08
I have said for two years, he is the one player on defense you can least afford to lose. He is to the defense what Ben is to the offense.
Kris
1:08
Realistically, gut feeling, do you see us winning number 7 before Ben retires?
Gerry Dulac
1:08
I think they have as good a chance as any team in the league
Kris
1:09
How long do you personally think it will take Pittsburgh to become a contender again once Ben retires in a few years?
Gerry Dulac
1:09
Depends on who replaces him
Kris
1:09
I'm assuming a trade is only possible with Bell after the tag is signed? And since he waited until 6 days before game 1 last year, what's up with everyone talking about trading/shopping Bell? You know he won't sign the tag anytime remotely soon so how is that possible?
Gerry Dulac
1:10
Those people want the Steelers to sign Bell to a contract and then trade him. But with the dollar figure it will take to get him to sign, how many teams would want to absorb that price? I can tell you -- not many

Gerry, Any chance the Steelers are eyeing any of these safetys? E Reid, K Vaccaro, and M Burnett? The first two are young with upside, while the latter a solid veteran. Thanks
Gerry Dulac
1:11
They have their eyes on a number of guys, but none I can tell you for certain. I think you will see them let the dust settle from all the free-agent activity and then make a move. That has been their M.O.

1:11 Gerry, any chance the Steelers approach the Bank of Ben for some salary relief? I've lost track of who has agreed to re-structure, but couldn't Pouncey also be a candidate?
They've already made that withdrawl

Gerry, let me down gently on this one: the Honey Badger signing in Pittsburgh could really re-shape what they need to do in the draft. But I'm guessing the price tag would be too high?
Gerry Dulac
1:13
Absolutely it would. It would negate the need to find a safety in the draft who could come in right away and play.

since we have about a 2 year window before we get into cap hell and Ben career ends do you think we would trade future draft picks to get more out of the draft this year
Gerry Dulac
1:14
Nope. Not their style
Matthew
1:14
Hey Gerry. Always enjoy your chats. Any news on Lev Bell's contract negotiations now that Dion and McKinnon have been signed to greater pric
Gerry Dulac
1:14
Nope. I think they remain in neutral.

Gerry, if the Steelers were to add starting help at ILB and S through free agency (I know, they have 37 cents to sign people), then couldn't they drop a TE or two and draft the kid from Penn State or the one from South Dakota State to free up some cap room?
