Good morning from Latrobe .... let's get our chat started.

Do you have an idea of what the Steelers’s plans are now for a long term starting franchise quarterback? Is plan A: hope Russell Wilson pans out this year and sign him for a couple more years, and if not just start from scratch next year?
Gerry Dulac
10:01
Bill, shocking to get a QB question from ya. Basically speaking, that is the plan. They intend to sign him to another deal after the season and he intends to sign it. But, what happens if he plays poorly? Do they sign him to another contract? That's going to be the interesting part.

Compared to other tight end and fullback options on the roster, does Conner Heyward really have value as a Steeler over other players at those positions in your opinion? The “brothers” novelty seems to have worn off to me.
Gerry Dulac
10:02
It's not about being Cam's brother; it's about he's a good football player, a baller, a guy who makes plays. And I think you will see him used more in Arthur Smith's offense.

Good morning, Gerry.  Other than the usual suspects, which player(s) have surprised you the most at training camp with their play in the early going?  Thank you for your insight, as always.
Gerry Dulac

Mason McCormick, their rookie guard, looks really good -- tough, moves people, moves well. RB Jonathan Ward has looked especially good, but I don't think there's a roster spot for him. There are several others.

It appears if a trade happens it will come down to 49ers settling for what Steelers offer or living with a disgruntled Aiyuk in 2024, what would you offer for him?  I say 2025 second and 2026 third and Austin.
Gerry Dulac
10:04
Well, that sounds good, but that's not going to happen because that's the problem to begin with -- the 49ers want an awful lot for Aiyuk. And, if the Steelers would trade for him, they would have to have a deal in place to keep him for more than a year. It's bot about the 49ers settling; it's about the 49ers dropping their asking price.

do you think Justin Fields will have a career with the Steelers as a Slac
Gerry Dulac
10:05
Not as a slash. Let me remind you, Slash was a WR/QB. This guy is not that

If you were the Steelers GM, would you trade for Aiyuk, and if so, what would you be willing to give up in the trade and what would you be willing to pay him?
Gerry Dulac
10:05
Sure I would trade for him ....if the price was right. And that's about the way the Steelers feel too
Uncle Larry
10:06
do you think Justin Fields can be a good “slash” player for us?
Gerry Dulac
10:07
See above. He is not going to play another position. But, if you mean, as a special-package QB who can run -- perhaps. They should utilize his talents. What's the harm? They need to score more points, find more weapons, and he's one.

Steelers fans, Russell is spelled with two L’s!

Hello Gerry. If Aiyuk's trade doesn't happen. Now that you have seen several Steelers' practices at both CB and WR, and all things considered equal, if you could, would you reverse the Diontae/Donte trade or do you believe the Steelers are still better off now after that trade?
Gerry Dulac
10:08
Look at it this way, they got themselves a better CB but also weakened the WR position.
7 year drought
10:09
Gerry, of the following stats which is the most damaging to MTs resume? 1) 13 out of 17 seasons without a single playoff win. 2) 7 straight years (the longest streak since 1972) without a post season win. 3) 11 of the past 13 years with zero post season success. 4) 0-7-1 record in his last 8 games against rookie Head Coaches.
Gerry Dulac
10:09
All of them except No. 4

Is there a fan base who overvalues the potential trade value of their players more than the Steelers?  Would this be a good way to calculate the real trade value: take what the average Steelers fan thinks a player is worth and reduce it by 2-3 rounds for draft picks?

I hate to tell you, all fans in every city do the same

Seeing some buzz around Van Jefferson’s camp performance so far - are you liking what you see?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
Yes I do. But I need to see it in a game

10:10
Can Omar get the deal done for Aiyuk ?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
Ask the 49ers.

In 2025 I’d assume we want to be signing a big contract to a QB because we experienced success. Does this logic make sense if we are considering breaking the bank for a WR1.
Gerry Dulac
10:12
If you mean a new deal for Pickens, they are not going to break the bank. But, as an aside, that's part of the problem with the Aiyuk trade: The Steelers are not going to give up too much or pay him some crazy amount on a new deal because, unless something unforseen occurs, they are going to pay Pickens before they pay Aiyuk. And name me the last time the Steelers gave big contracts to two WRs? I can't.

With Art Smith’s commitment to the run and Najee’s durability is there still a chance we see 22 in Pittsburgh beyond this season? Warren is dynamic, but it seems like his situation is perfect with 22 absorbing more of the workload while still being more or less productive, if not spectacular.
Gerry Dulac
10:12
Absolutely. I expect it
Jim
10:12
Has Fields shown that he may be the QB of the future? Has he improved in camp?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
That's what the games will show us. But, need I remind you of how unstoppable the first-team looked in the preseason last year only to see it flop in the regular season?
Jake
10:14
Jim Wexell claims if it is not coming from you, WR from SanFran rumor talks are just that.
Gerry Dulac
10:14
I told you that Wexell is a smart guy.

There’s no way Dan Moore starts the season as the left tackle right ? I don’t even like thinking about that possibility
Gerry Dulac
10:14
Wrong

thanks for the chats Gerry. Your colleague Ray has mentioned more than once in the past week or so that Fautano’s best shot long term in the league may be at G. This is very discouraging as we are deeper at G than perhaps any other position and we need to get Jones back to the left side. How has TF held up at T so far in your opinion?
Gerry Dulac
10:15
Ray been talking to me too much. Long term, the plan is Fauntanu at right tackle. Short term, the best and maybe quickest path for him to get into the starting lineup is at right guard.

  • Good Morning Mr. Dulac.  I for one will be ready for the Brandon Aiyuk saga to be over one way or the other.  For speculation purposes, is it likely that a trade for Aiyuk this year signal the likelihood that Pittsburgh will look for a trade partner next year for Pickens?
