Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 07.30.25

Gerry Dulac

OK kids, we're going to start our chat in just a few minutes...
9:51
OK, here we go..!!
Stairway to seventh seed

Gerry: counting Bruener and Robinson, the Steelers might have 6 inside linebackers who can play.  Can you see one of them being traded for a WR or OT?  What caliber of WR could say Holcombe bring?
Gerry Dulac
9:52
Well, they couldn't or wouldn't trade Bruener because he's a low-drafted rookie and wouldn't command anything. Holcomb would be a possibility but his past injury might limit his market. I like Holcomb and if he's your backup you're doing OK

Gerry , good morning . What’s the feel or vibe you get from this team about the season ? Super optimistic & confident on making the post season ?
Gerry Dulac
9:55
My man, I'm never super optimistic about anything, much less the chances of the team. And I'm not sure I'm even confident, though I'm more that than super optimistic.

Also what about the attitudes of all the new free agent veterans that have joined the team ?. Is the  appreciation of the Steeler culture of years past when we developed our own players long gone and what truly being a Steeler organization meant?
Gerry Dulac
9:55
That's too hard to evaluate, especially this early.

Have you seen HG2?
Scottie Scheffler is really ingratiating himself to us with his self deprecating humor.
Gerry Dulac
9:56
I have and I'm not exactly going to encourage anyone to go watch it. But, yes, Scottie is very good.

If you were calling the shots, what QB moves would you have made since Ben retired? Start Mason? Something else?
Gerry Dulac
9:57
I would've drafted Kenny Pickett. Oh wait, they did that

Gerry: in the mid teens there were a lot of 26 and 84 jerseys in the stands.  I think many fans now look back on that era and think it was derailed by the selfish attitude of those players who were more interested in leading their position in salary than winning.  A decade from now will we feel any differently about TJ Watt?
Gerry Dulac
9:58
It is beyond unfair and completely inappropriate to put Watt in a conversation with those two, especially 84. Just because he has a big contract doesn't qualify him to be selfish and narcissistic. He is anything but

Hi Gerry - thanks for the chats. Definitely not the most talked about topic, but what does the punting competition look like between Waitman and Johnston thus far?
Gerry Dulac
10:00
Johnston will be the punter, but I'm impressed with Waitman. I don't know why or how he didn't get a shot with another team in camp. Maybe he will eventually. He's an NFL-capable punter.
Lou
10:00
Hey Gerry. How is Roman Wilson looking at camp?  Think he will hold up as WR2?
Gerry Dulac
10:01
He will not be WR2 unless something dramatic and completely unexpected happens. I'll say this, even without pads, he has not done anything to stand out after one week at camp. I like the guy, but at some point, even in shorts, you have to stand out. Maybe he will soon

In a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being excellent, how would you rate the Steelers ability to evaluate quarterbacks since Ben retired?
Gerry Dulac
10:04
Well, the only one they apparently over-rated was the guy they drafted in the first round and traded two years later.  They might have under-rated Mason Rudolph. They got more out of Justin Fields than the Bears did. Rodgers? Kind of hard to over-rate a four-time MVP

Good morning, Mr Dulac. My question has to do with compensation for players on the practice squad. My impression is that there must be tiers, but I don’t know. If, for example, a player who has signed a contract that would pay him for being on the 53 and is then moved to the PS, is there a corresponding change in what he is paid?
Gerry Dulac
10:05
Yes there is.
Ryan
10:05
Wouldn’t it be prudent to find out what you have in Will Howard THIS  year, before potentially trading up to draft a quarterback next year?  I feel like we will never know the true potential of Howard because Rogers will be starting this year and then next year they’re going to go and draft “their” guy.  Maybe you already have the quarterback of the future on the team and can use all those picks to build around him next year 🤔
Gerry Dulac
10:06
They are interested in this year, not 2026 or 2027. They are trying to win this year, which is why Aaron Rodgers is here. They will worry about 2026 and 2027 in 2026 and 2027
Jim
10:06
So far Rodgers looks like a major upgrade "arm wise" over Wilson, is the arrow pointing up on the season? Defense looking good, RB's solid, improved all the way around from last year?
Gerry Dulac
10:07
It's only one week into camp with no pads. I'll wait

If Broderick Jones was a 6th round draft pick, would he still have a job?  Is he just not living up to expectations of a first round pick or is he really as bad as he seems?  The three penalties in five snaps game was really hard to watch.
Gerry Dulac
10:07
He's not as bad as you seem to think he is.
Jim
10:07
Do you think Johnson will surpass Warren early in the season or at all? He looks good so far.
Gerry Dulac
10:09
At some point he will. I'm eager to see him pads against guys wanting to tackle. But he will be the starter in 2026 because they will not re-sign Warren.

Line from a movie last night that's stuck in my head. "no matter how bad things get, somebody else always has it worse." Which in our case would be Browns fans. Do you get the sense Stefanski has the same level of control over there as MT has in Pgh.?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
No he does not. He has a meddlesome owner who learned nothing in his time as a Steelers investor
Jim
10:10
Do we need to start worrying about Jones yet? Not hearing great things out of camp about him. Is it just media hype or is he struggling?
Gerry Dulac
10:11
They're not even in pads or hitting yet. What's to evaluate??
Left tackle
10:11
Good morning, Gerry. Hope the weather cooperates today for pad popping. Suppose Broderick Jones is average at best, what, if any  moves are the Steelers ready to make in order to protect AR?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
They are not prepared to make any. Jones is their guy...unless he's a complete disaster

10:13
Morning Gerry. I looked at the hall of honor roster this morning and it appears the only prominent member of the four-rings club from the 70's that's missing is JT Thomas. Do you envision him on a short list anytime soon?
Gerry Dulac
10:13
Not sure.
Jersey Danno
10:14
Lots of candidates for Camp Darling '25. Sawyer, Johnson, Howard, Castro. Any emerging dark horses early on?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
Gotta wait a little more
