Good Morning Gerry! Does the uncharacteristic FA activity this spring bolster the chances of the Steelers trading down to grab a top 10 pick or do they wait and see who falls to them, say a Banks or Ringo?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
Well, it wasn't uncharacteristic if you look at how active they were last year too, which tells you they think they need a lot of new players to contend. But I don't think anything they did will greatly influence what they do in the first round or who they select, other than it won't be a guard.

Asst. GM Andy Weidl won’t be the final voice on the Steelers’ picks. But given his background in Philly — where his old boss Howie Roseman is a magician at manipulating up and down the draft board every year — I’m wondering if you think some of that has rubbed off on him and might impact the way the Steelers do business next week.
Gerry Dulac

I'm sure some of Howie rubbed off on him but I don't know that it will have any impact on draft day. That's because the decisions will be mainly among Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan and Art Rooney II. That doesn't mean Andy Weidl won't have some input because, after all, he is the person responsible for putting together the draft board

A lot of talk about taking an OT in the first round but do the Steelers historically value the position? In the 53 drafts since 1970 the Steelers have taken an OT just twice. They have taken a DB most often during that time and my money says they will do it again.
Gerry Dulac
11:01
I would agree, but don't go to sleep on the possibility of an offensive tackle, especially Darnell Wright. But there is one position on the team, above all the others, that could use an immediate starter and that's cornerback. Keep that in mind.

Do we know if OT Dawand Jones, DL Gervon Dexter, CB Emmanuel Forbes or CB Kelee Ringo actually come in for pre-draft visits with the team?
Gerry Dulac
11:03
None of those players made a visit

With the team bringing in more interior OL for pre-draft visits versus Tackles, are they more likely to draft iOL from your point of view?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
No. Quite the opposite. If they draft an OL in the first round, it will be a tackle. I'm not sure a guy like Peter Skoronski interests them because, for their purposes, they think he's a guard, not a tackle.

Aaron Wilson pointed to CB Tyrique Stevenson as a possibility for the team at 17. Have you heard anything similar?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
That's the first I'm hearing of it. So...no

From what you're hearing, what sleeper picks could we see at 17?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
If you see a sleeper pick at 17, shame on them.

Gerry, thank you for your time in holding these chats. My question is about Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz. You have been a proponent of his for quite a while and I agree with you after going back and watching some of his game. However, with Cole at center and at least 4 other solid interior linemen, would the Steelers still consider Schmitz if he were available at either 2nd round slot?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
The reason I like him is because he might be the best plug-and-play lineman in the draft, the guy who could come in and start immediately at his position. I can't speak for them, but if were there at 49 I'd jump on him.

What is the earliest you foresee the team addressing EDGE?

11:07
Thanks for the chats Gerry.  Whats with Bush bashing the culture Tomlins creates?  A large number of players come out and say they want to play for Tomlin.  And those that dont like him usually fade away into mediocrity somewhere else.  I could argue Tomlin kept Bush as the starter WAY too long.  Why not just shut your mouth and try to revive your career?
Gerry Dulac

Oops, forgot to send previous answer about Edge rusher -- Fourth round
11:09
Ok, now on to Bush -- that's Bush. That's his problem. Blaming everyone but himself for his deficiencies.

Does the Robinson addition change any draft plans for the team at WR?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
Nope. Wouldn't add one to the fourth round anyway. But, as I've always cautioned, they have a hard time turning their back on a skill player when one with a high grade is still sitting there. Always remember that

Do you feel that the Steelers take full advantage of the proximity & accessibility of the Pitt program with regard to drafting or signing their players?
Gerry Dulac
11:12
You make it sound as though it's a gold mine next door.

Is the team more likely to trade up or trade down this year? If up, which specific prospects would warrant a move? Jalen Carter, Gonzalez, OT #1?
Gerry Dulac
11:13
To me, if they trade up, it's to get a top CB. Yeah, like the one you mentioned. That guy. I think a decision on Carter is made only if he drops to 17, which I doubt

If the Allen Robinson trade goes through post physical does that mean no WR in draft (except possibly 7th round) and do you think it makes it more likely we find our 3rd qb late in draft and/or undrafted free agent? Any opinion on the QBs who've been in for a top 30 visit?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
The idea the Steelers were going to target a WR high in the draft is foolhardy, even before the Robinson trade. But I am not ruling out the possibility of drafting a WR on day 3. As for QBs, I don't see them drafting one, but I will tell you they like the kid from BYU who was the only QB they brought in for a visit -- Jaren Hall

Hi Gerry. When Ray F. issued his first mock draft he chose Lucas Van Ness at 17. I didn't like that pick. The more I've watched of him I'm really impressed. He's an inside/outside version of TJ Watt. I've read he can also gain weight without slowing down. Do you have an opinion of him and would you take him at 17 if he gets that far?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
I will tell you the Steelers really like him, either as a DE who has to add 20 pounds or a possible edge guy who needs to lose 20 pounds. Me? I would have him add 20 pounds and be the next Cam Heyward.

Joey Porter and Deonte Banks are the best CBs available on the board at 17. Which one do they take?

Do you feel that GM Colbert would have made as many off season moves this year? Is it a by-product of not having the franchise qb cap hit and the ability to spend in other areas?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
He made just as many moves last year, especially to get Trubisky, Daniels, Cole, Wallace and Ogunjobi

Good Morning Gerry. The Steelers are closing in on their worst playoff win drought in the Super Bowl era (most of it with a franchise QB). Where do you think most of the blame for this drought should be placed? Head Coach? Front Office? Expensive QB contract? Something else?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
A little bit of the front office and coaching, but mainly the coaching. That is Mike Tomlin's job. And to be embarrassed the way they were in their past three playoff losses, allowing an average of 45 points a game, there is no excuse for that.

How did you like the proposed trade for Robinson? Low risk high reward?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
It's another no-brainer. He is a productive veteran receiver when healthy. Yes -- low risk, high reward.
