With the success shown recently by Mahomes/Allen/Watson/Murray/Jackson a lot of teams seem to be looking for that skill set but as seen previously that playing style leads to a lot of injuries and a shortened career. A RB can manage to hold a ball and run with an assortment or injuries but even minor injuries can have a huge impact on throwing motion…
Are teams talking themselves into a future regret with projecting Willis, who doesn’t have the tape to warrant a high pick, into the top of the draft just for that athletic profile?
Gerry Dulac

That is the probably with running QBs -- they are subject to more pounding and a greater incidence of injury. But here's the other problem: Once those QBs get the $100 million contract, their GMs/owners don't want them running as much, thus taking away the very weapon that made them effective. But let's not confuse Mahomes and Russell Wilson with the others. They're running around to bide time, not take off into the secondary.

How much will MC’s scheme influence the type of QB being drafted or are the Steelers more married to the idea of the athletic/rpo capable profile?
Gerry Dulac
10:51
That is usually the case, 9.5 out of 10 times. Plus, the Steelers have always tried to draft players to fit the way they play, not the other way around.

The Steelers will now need 2 QB’s before OTA/Traning Camp.
How do you see them acquiring those players and will this move the QB position up on the list of needs for the draft even with the overall weakness of quality?
Gerry Dulac

I see one of each -- one in the draft, a third-team veteran in free agency. I don't think the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins changes their approach in the first round, but I do think it changes what their approach would have been in the later rounds. I think you will see them draft a QB sometime after the third round, someone to be the third or fourth guy. I know I'm going to get a lot of questions about this today (I already peeked), but I've said it before and I'll say it again -- drafting a QB in the first round is a waste. There are no QBs in the draft who are better than what they have. They are the best what is an average lot. And trading up for one of those guys??? Unless you are desperate (like Seattle), that is ludicrous.

Can our OC scheme ways to get the ball in Claypool’s hands in some manner other than a contested jump ball, which seems to leave him climbing off the turf in some level of pain and likely has led to his productivity issues to some degree?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
Yeah, if he could get open better than he does. There's a reason his catches are always contested.

IF Mayfield were to be cut by the brownies would the Steelers consider signing him as competition for MT or are reports of his personality quirks something the team would not be willing to take on?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
I don't see that happening at all. A team like Seattle makes perfect sense for a Mayfield landing spot.

If either of the boundary options that have injury recovery concerns, CB Stingley and WR Williams, would the Steelers be interested in taking them with the idea of better quality pick that may need a little time to fully recover or are they looking for instant impact?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
They have two WRs -- TWO! I think they need and want someone who can contribute right away.

Steelers clearly have heavy interest in drafting a QB this year. What is your sense, if you have any, that they'll aggressively explore trading up to acquire one?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
My sense is that is totally ridiculous. Any team that does that for one of those guys is, like I said, truly desperate. And the Steelers have never ever approached a draft with desperation.

Hey Gerry, feels like a QB might land at 20, but not sure Willis is there.  Does it seem like if he is there, Steelers pull the trigger, otherwise another direction?  If offense is drafted at that position, I would accept one of the stellar WRs if available.
Gerry Dulac
11:00
I think the only offensive position you will see drafted in the first round by the Steelers is WR. They never turn their back on a skill player. But I think it is more likely they take a WR in the second round. I think it's a safe bet that their top three picks will come from these positions -- DT, WR, OL, SS

Hi Gerry, Is there word of a 3rd FA QB to be signed and who that might be?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
None yet. And there aren't many out there.

Hi Gerry, I have been right there with you in regards to drafting defensive line in round one and passing on an average quarterback crop. If Davis and Wyatt are gone when the Steelers pick at 20, what position do you see as the next target? All grades being relatively equal, I’d prefer Trevor Penning or cornerback with wide receiver the third option
Gerry Dulac
11:02
Given their history, I hope they never draft a cornerback with the No. 1 pick. But, given your scenario, I think you will see them take a WR. The reason I think they will go DT 1 and WR 2 is because there are very few quality DTs in the draft and they better get one while they are still available. There are plenty of WRs.
Gene
11:02
Do you think they will draft a safety in the early rounds or just sign Edmunds.
Gerry Dulac
11:03
Not in the early rounds. No sooner than 3rd, unless something happens before then, in which case drop a SS into the third day, if at all.

Let's assume no more free agents are signed before the draft. In your opinion, which position is the most urgent draft need for the Steelers?

Gerry, I read in the PG that Mike Tomlin will sit in on the second round of interviews for the new GM.  I think that’s a big mistake on AR II’s part.   Tomlin will not want someone who might have a different philosophy than himself and slant the hiring away from the best candidate.  Your comments please.  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Tomlin might sit in, but AR2 will hire who he thinks is the right guy, not anyone else.

Based on pro days and top 30 visits, do you have any indication of what the Steelers will do on draft night? Is Malik the only QB you could see them being aggressive on and moving up for?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
I don't see them being aggressive and moving up for any QB, let alone Willis. Would go down as one of the worst draft-day moves in history.

I really believe the Steelers have needs at WR, CB and DL. However there are not a lot of first round defensive tackles and the WR group lacks top end talent. Both may be better 2nd round value. If the top prospects for both those are gone at 20. What surprise pick could we see?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
I agree with most of what you said. But I don't think you will see a surprise pick. The surprise pick will be if they draft a QB on the first round.

Hi Gerry....tremendous job all off season.   The PG Steelers coverage has been awesome!    I've been sick over the death of Dwayne Haskins.  Such an awful thing to deal with for everyone.   I'm beginning to believe that if a WR like Olave slips to #20....you take him.   Any thought on a WR at #1?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
I don't know about Olave specifically, but it is not far-fetched to think they will take a WR on the first round
Joe
11:06
Seems like receiver depth is good but no stars. Is there a second or third round receiver they may like, if not a name what type do they want. Slot, deep threat?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
I disagree with that assessment. There are plenty of good WRs
Joe
11:06
Steelers loves to draft pass rushers and this is a deep class for that. Where do you think they draft one. I know they picked up Avery but I don’t think that would stop them from adding someone would it?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
They won't. If they do, it won't be until the third day of the draft. They have other needs.
