OK kids, we will start our chat in about 15-20 minutes, so get ready.
10:52
OK, here we go....

Hi Gerry do you think the Steelers would go defense with either the 2nd or 3rd pick if a high rated player is there?
Gerry Dulac
10:53
It wouldn't shock me. But, with so little done in free agency, I would expect he first two picks to be offense, either RB and C/T. But they need inside LB help and they don't have any backups at the most important position on the defense -- OLB

So many mock drafts, so little time!  They are all over the map on who the Steelers choose in Round 1 ... RB, OT, ILB, Edge.  If you are GM and you're on the clock, who would you choose? Second question, does your intel and "gut" indicate what they will likely do with the first pick?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
The second question will answer the first question -- they will go either RB or OT/C on the first round, depending on how the draft unfolds.

Hi Gerry, what is your best guess on how the TE position will shake out this season?  I say keep Ebron, for 2021, although I do not think he will deliver, sign Jesse James to two-year deal, draft a quality TE prospect in round 3/4, cut Gentry, keep Rader for practice squad.
Gerry Dulac
10:56
You don't have to worry about keeping Ebron -- they've already ensured that. Jesse James is such a logical choice to return, and that would be a good move. I don't think they will cut Gentry but I like what I saw of Rader as a blocking tight end/special teams player late in the season.

My dream draft is to get both Teven Jenkins and

Will Tomlin pull Ben if he is stinking up the game in an attempt to save it and try Rudolf and Haskins??
Gerry Dulac
10:56
Nope.

Did Okorfor ever play on the left in college? Many are assuming he can.
Gerry Dulac
10:57
I don't know that answer, but he is more capable on the left side than Banner.

I reviewed all of Justin Layne's film from 2020 and am convinced that he was Tomlin's worst secondary pick over the last decade, which is very damning. Tomlin's secondary picks have all been "reaches," or players that were expected to be drafted much later in the draft. Why have the Steelers struggled drafting DB's, considering Tomlin's pedigree as a secondary coach?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
You're right, that's very damning, considering their drafting failures at that position.

It seems like once you become an NFL assistant coach, many become lifers in the sport.. Is it telling that Randy Fichtner has not even a position coach yet? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:58
I have to admit, I'm surprised he hasn't. But maybe he doesn't want to jump right back in. Or maybe he wants to wait for the right offer.

Good morning Mr. Dulac.  Thank you for diligently and patiently serving your readers.   Do players entering the NFL undergo some kind of training and/or orientation to the work world with which they are about to enter?  If so, who provides this training, the league or the team?   My frosh LBs in Manhattan Beach again send their regards to you!
Gerry Dulac
10:59
Yes they do. The league and teams orient all rookies in many aspects of the professional world of fotball, including investments, how to deal with the media, social media, et al.

The concessions available to fans last year at Steelers game were REALLY poor. Any word on the availability of nachos and cheese and hot pretzels for this year? What will the post-covid fan experience be like?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
Give em a break. There was a pandemic.

What do you think they ultimate ly decide to do with Mason? This is his last year under contract and obviously most likely Bens. Do you think they give Mason a small 2-3 extension?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Yes I do. That would make the most sense. They are not going to go into 2022 with NO quarterback

Give me a random dark horse pick for round 1.  I know youve got one....

Will Zalatoris. Oh, you mean the draft, not the Masters....

Thanks for the chat! How much time, if any, does a team spend on studying other teams needs prior to the draft to develop their strategy on what positions or players may be available when they pick? Or am I overthinking this?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
I don't how much time they spend, but they conduct so many mock drafts before the actual draft that they are prepared for many scenarios, including what other teams will do.

Gerry, I just LOVE how REAL you keep it with Steelers nation - thank you! With regard to keeping it real, the Steelers cannot possibly address all of their "holes" in this year's draft. Which positions are of the greatest import? TYVM.
Gerry Dulac
11:03
And that's because they didn't address center in free agency. Usually they attack a position of need in free agency to eliminate that need in the draft. To your point, I think you will see RB, C/OT, ILB and OLB
Tarzan
11:03
The Steelers need a tight end. Fee agent or draft or both?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
It won't be both. Bringing Jesse James back would alleviate that problem
Ryan
11:04
Outside of Harris and Etienne is there a RB in this draft that you could see being our future starter? I don't think we need anymore 3rd round+ guys.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Agreed, they have third-round guys. They need a stud starter. And, yeah, I think Javonte Williams would be a good fit, too

Gerry -   What is your best guess on which center the Steelers pick and the round?  Do you think the Seelers think they can pick up a TE in rounds 4 or below that gives them same value as J. James?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
There aren't many NFL-desired centers in the draft, but Dickerson from Alabama might be the best. Rashawn Slater is a good possibility on the second round. I don't see a tight end any higher than the fourth round, if at all.

Gerry, love that chats - as a former wrestler, I think Iowa wrestling stand-out (from Murrysville) could excel in the NFL. His work ethic is legendary and he would be a GREAT influence in the locker room. Have the Steelers ever had success bringing in "athletes" from other sports, a la Tony Gonzales?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
Yeah, another former NCAA champion wrestler -- Carlton Haselrig. Went on to be an All-Pro guard

Morning Gerry, Are NFL coaches and FO personnel allowed to talk to college players when they attend pro days on college campuses?
Gerry Dulac

Of course. That's the purpose
