Anthony Franco
3:56
Hey everyone, hope you had a great week!
3:57
Going to keep this chat right to an hour since I've done a bunch of them with our outlook series this week, but I should be able to get through most of the questions
gleyber
3:57
He's always mentioned as a trade chip but this year (156 games, 121 wrc+) do you think he gets extended? Peraza isn't playing well either, but cashman doesn't seem to love gleyber. What are the chances of an extension and what might a deal look like?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Yeah he just has never felt like a player they'd want to extend. They've got the middle infield prospect duo of Volpe/Peraza to potentially step in. They could flip Gleyber for pitching help or something
4:01
But you're right, he is a good player. Second base only doesn't tend to pay well in free agency, but he's a well-rounded and above-average hitter every year who's going to hit free agency before his 28th birthday. While five-year free agent deals for second basemen aren't usually a thing, Gleyber could be an exception
I think the 5/75 that Benintendi got -- good hitter, some defense, still young and a former top prospect -- should be the floor there

Who is more worthy of the AL Cy Young Award...Cole or Bassitt? I suppose and argument could be made for Sonny Gray. Cole pitches for a .500 team not in the playoffs. Bassitt went 16-8, 200 innings, ERA 3.60, 186 Ks. He's no slouch. Not a jab at Cole I just think Bassitt is a better candidate for the award.
Anthony Franco
4:03
It's Cole for me pretty easily. Cy Young is an individual award. It doesn't matter to me at all that Bassitt's on a better team. I can see the argument for that in MVP consideration even if I don't agree with it, but I really don't think it should matter for CY, Rookie of the Year or a Silver Slugger
4:04
Cole has nine more innings, nearly a run lower in ERA, almost 40 more strikeouts. Bassitt had a really good season, but give me Cole
I would have Sonny Gray above Bassitt as well, as you mentioned
Rand al'Thor is annoying
4:04
Is Brendan Donovan, Ivan Herrera + throw in/lottery ticket enough to bring back a top 1 or 2 starter for the Cards
Anthony Franco
4:06
I think that's a compelling starting point. I don't have a great answer as to which pitcher that might be. It's probably more than I'd give up for Dylan Cease, but he's the closest one

Last question got cut off - would the Orioles rather face familiar team from AL East (Rays/Jays) or AL West team in the ALDS?
4:07
What are your feelings on the current playoff system? Should the #1 seed get to choose their opponent? Should there be reseeding? It seems silly that the 2nd best team in the AL (by record) could potentially face the #1 seed in the ALDS.
Anthony Franco
4:08
I agree, think the top seeds should pick who they wanted to face. In most cases, it'd be the lowest seed anyways, but it's a nice bonus for the best teams and could add some intrigue
4:09
If the top seed chooses to face the #4 team instead of #5 and they get upset, the 4 seed (and its fanbase) would probably have a field day. That's fun
As for the other question, I'd rather face the Jays than any of the AL West teams but I'd take the West teams over playing the Rays
trade deadline
4:09
would adding 4 new mlb teams make the trade deadline more interesting? the expanded playoffs seem to have shrunk the number of sellers
Anthony Franco
4:10
Hadn't considered that but yeah, I think it would eventually be a nice boost to the deadline
In the short term, those expansion teams would be so bad that they wouldn't have a ton to offer. It'd be kind of like this year's A's just trading Jace Peterson and Sam Moll
4:11
Within 3-5 years, the talent should even itself out and having a large group of non-playoff teams would again spur some deadline activity
RAGBRAI
4:12
Assuming Pitt picks up one or two pitchers via trade or FA, who from this year’s rotation starts out there in ‘24? Seems like they have some young guns ready to step up.
Anthony Franco
4:13
Keller stays. I think Oviedo has done enough to secure a back-end job. Brubaker won't be ready for the start of the season, so  it's probably Priester and then two offseason acquisitions
4:14
Roansy Contreras has to start back in the minors after a terrible '23 season. Luis Ortiz didn't secure a roster spot. Bailey Falter will be out of options and probably on the roster bubble all winter
Eddie
4:14
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Silseth was having a stellar run when he was hit in the head with a thrown ball by his teammate.  He had a concussion and I don't think he pitched at all the rest of the season.  Is there any news about him?  Does he come back full force next season?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Activated from the IL yesterday. He's starting tonight against Oakland

Thanks, Anthony, for these chats. The NY Yankees are in need of a slight over hall. I believe statistics have led many an organization down a path of trying to find the diamond in the rough. Only to find out the season is a grind of 162 games and the depth roster spots are tested and not always interchangeable with that said, my question is do you believe the NY Yankees can trade Giancarlo Stanton. I understand he has a no trade clause but maybe to a team like Dodgers, to pay down his salary to make it palatable. He seems to hit well there has fond memories of Dodger Stadium. He grew up in the area. My other want as a fan, in the Off season, is to sign the Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto and FA Cody Bellinger. I look at these as a need. what do you think?
Yankees
4:15
what bat do they add this offseason? They need to get someone, right?
Anthony Franco
4:18
Even if Stanton is willing to waive the NTC, there's just not going to be interest. He's an aging DH with a concerning injury history and a .275 on-base percentage in 101 games this year. That's before even considering the contract. There are probably some teams that wouldn't consider Stanton worth rostering even if he were making the league minimum
4:19
I like the Bellinger fit for the Yankees. They and the Giants are the two teams that make the most sense there to me
4:20
I doubt they sign Bellinger and Yamamoto -- could be nearly $500MM between the two -- but Yamamoto fits if they preferred to make their big investment on the pitching side again
Question Mark
4:20
Everyone seems to be mum about the Wander Franco situation.  How long does this play out before the Dominican Courts make a decision?  He may have had his last at-bat in the Majors if the charges are true!
Anthony Franco
4:22
ESPN reported last month that the criminal investigation is expected to go well into the offseason. Seems like it could be November or so before we hear anything

Hey Anthony, could you provide a calendar of when you folks intend to publish the Offseason Outlook for each team?  It would make it easier for the readers to anticipate specific teams / individuals in which they are interested.  Thanks.
Anthony Franco
4:24
We don't have specific dates set. Not going to do any outlooks for teams that are still in playoff contention, and some of the non-contenders (Red Sox, Mets, Guardians, Padres) could have front office or managerial news that drops right after the season ends
4:25
Steve's hoping to get the A's outlook up over the weekend (although he and his wife are also expecting a baby at any point which could obviously affect that). I'll do the Giants outlook next week and the Reds if they miss the playoffs. Beyond that, it's still up in the air

4:25
So, you guys are planning to do the Mets and Yankees next?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Yankees could be soon. Hoping for more clarity on what happens with Boone first. Waiting on the Mets until Stearns is allowed to speak with the media

There have been a flurry of stadium announcements in recent weeks. Does anything give you pause about expansion being imminent at this point? The Orioles’ MOU is less than what was originally reported, but the trends all seem  to be headed in the right direction. John Sherman’s efforts in Kansas City have been delayed and are polling poorly (can’t blame the local fan base: the team collapsed after the 2015 WS win, is dreadful, and future prospects are grim), but that lease isn’t up until 2031.
Anthony Franco
4:27
No I'd say the stadium stuff has mostly gone as anticipated. Could still see expansion being a legitimate possibility towards the tail end of the decade
