Hey everyone, hope you're all having a good week
Looking forward to another one of these, let's get rolling
Dave just…Dave
2:00
Is Amir Garrett a non-tender candidate? If he could just not walk so many guys, and bring his strikeouts back up, his numbers would be quite good (amazingly, he hasn’t given up a home run so far this season!)
Anthony Franco
2:01
Yeah I think he'll be non-tendered. Like you mentioned, the walks are astronomical and the swing-and-miss is way down relative to his best seasons in Cincinnati
2:02
The zero home runs allowed is pretty remarkable -- hadn't realized that until you pointed it out -- but also not something you can expect him to repeat, particularly since he actually has a below-average grounder rate
Stormy
2:02
If San Diego was willing to eat 100% of hosmer’s deal why not DFA him instead of attaching prospects?
Anthony Franco
2:03
They got back Jay Groome, who they must consider a better prospect than Corey Rosier and Max Ferguson (understandably). Otherwise, yeah, there's no point in not just releasing Hosmer
The Mess That Is The DBacks Bullpen
2:04
The Dbacks owe Melancon $6 million for 2023 plus a $2 million buyout for 2024.  Their only reliable bullpen pieces are lefties:  Mantiply, K. Nelson, and C. Smith (and he is debatable).   What should the Dbacks do about this mess over the winter and specifically the closer role?
Anthony Franco
2:06
Yeah they're just kind of stuck bringing back Melancon at this point, but they certainly don't have to give him the ninth inning. I agree that right-handed relief should be pretty high up on their priority list this winter
2:07
Don't expect them to sign Edwin Díaz or anything but they're a dark-horse fit for a Kenley Jansen or Craig Kimbrel buy-low flyer, sure
Jose
2:07
Does Jose Berrios pitch in the playoffs? Kikuchi?
Anthony Franco
2:08
I don't see how you can have Berríos in the rotation for the first-round series, since it's only three games. Gausman and Manoah are locks, and I'd go Stripling first if they go to game 3. Can keep José in the bullpen for that though and call upon him as the #4 if they advance to the longer rounds
2:09
Kikuchi probably sticks on the roster as a second lefty reliever behind Tim Mayza, since they basically have no other options. Don't think he'd get any high-leverage playoff innings though, some situational or mop-up work at best
Joe H.
2:09
Are the White Sox the most under-achieving/disappointing team in MLB this year? Do you just chalk it up to injuries, or is this a failed attempt at a rebuild?
Anthony Franco
2:10
White Sox and Giants are 1-2 in some order, then probably Boston and Minnesota
2:11
Wouldn't go so far as to call it a failed attempt at a rebuild. They won the Central last year and still have a lot of talent they'll bring back. If you asked me to pick the 2023 AL Central winner right now, I'd probably take Chicago
2:13
But it's not entirely injuries. Guys like Moncada and Grandal were terrible even when healthy enough to play. Second base was a question mark coming into the season and blew up, rotation depth was always kind of iffy. Would having Tim Anderson and Garrett Crochet healthy all year have helped? Sure, but I don't consider that the main reason they're not going to make the playoffs
reliever overload
2:13
Do the Mariners have an excess of quality high leverage arms that they can trade from to package for some offense?
Anthony Franco
2:15
Reliever volatility is such that I think they'll just bring everybody back. Munoz is under contract forever, Swanson and Sewald seem too good to give up. Penn Murfee isn't really the kind of guy teams are going to give up a big league hitter for, even if he has been quite good this year
2:16
Maybe they package Matt Brash as part of a broader deal to acquire a controllable hitter, but it seems likelier that a "pitching for offense" kind of trade just involves dealing Flexen to a team that needs a little more rotation depth
Bert
2:16
Only can sign 1. Would you sign  Bassitt or Diaz. LGM.
Anthony Franco
2:17
I'd be wary of any nine-figure deal for a reliever (which I expect Díaz to command). So I'd go Bassitt, who's going to significantly cheaper, particularly with the possibility of losing deGrom, Walker and Carrasco as well
BC Dan-O
2:17
The Guards have never been shy of dealing a young prime-time stud before they get too rich; do you think they are partially checking Karinchak for his closer capabilities in the possibility of a Clase off-season trade?
Anthony Franco
2:18
Man that seems pretty bold, even for them. They just extended Clase this spring, would be really surprised if they deal him this quickly
2:19
He's making nothing for the next two seasons (and barely more than nothing in 2025-26) and already locked in as a top ten reliever in the game. I don't see it
Rangers13
2:19
Do the Rangers and Marlins match better in a trade for pitching or Ranger and Guardians for same?
Anthony Franco
2:21
Marlins make a little more sense than Cleveland. Guardians already have an abundance of infielders, as Texas does, and don't really have strict positional needs other than catcher. Maybe you want to include Jonah Heim in a deal with Cleveland for some starting pitching, but that feels risky with Garver coming off the elbow surgery
2:24
I like the fit with Miami though. If they think Adolis García can play center field -- and they've played Jesús Sánchez and Bryan de la Cruz there, so they can't be that picky about it -- then a trade involving Pablo López for García and a couple mid-level prospects is pretty reasonable to me
RAGBRAI
2:24
Does Philips move into the closet role in LA postseason? What about next year?
Anthony Franco
2:25
He's definitely good enough for it but they seem to like him more as a high-leverage weapon. I expect they'll replace Kimbrel with a veteran (or eventually let one of Hudson or Treinen get the ninth) and keeps Phillips in the 7th/8th
Mo Vaughn
2:25
Casas just hasn’t looked good. Does he start the season in Worcester? Do they slide him to DH (assuming JD is gone), have Hosmer at first, or vice versa?
Anthony Franco
2:27
Doubt they'll shoehorn him into DH full-time, although a hybrid 1B/DH role with a veteran signee makes some sense. Hosmer shouldn't factor into the decision at all
For the second straight offseason, I think they should make a run at the top free agent first basemen on the market
RAGBRAI
2:27
Barrero was pretty hyped preseason, then an injury. Has he played himself out of a starting role next year?
Anthony Franco
2:28
Probably. Even with 2023 looking like a transitional year, I don't know how you can open the season with a guy who had a .196 OBP and a 44% strikeout rate as your starting shortstop
2:29
Low-cost veteran stopgap pickup, send Barrero back to Louisville. If he hits well there, the Reds can call him back up and move whoever they sign (José Iglesias, Elvis Andrus) to the bench
Dano
2:29
Besides the Yankees, who will get so enamored with Judge's career year that they throw silly money at him?
Anthony Franco
2:30
Don't see why basically every win-now team that spends near the top of the league wouldn't be involved. Dodgers, Rangers, Giants, Red Sox, Mets
2:31
Padres/Astros have more pressing concerns, but I'm guessing they'll at least check in. You'll probably hear whispers about the Cubs, even though I don't think that'll get very far
I'd take the Yankees over the field though
