Hey everyone, hope you all enjoyed deadline season!
3:00
Well judging from the questions in here you didn't all enjoy what your favorite teams did, but hopefully it was entertaining to follow haha
Let's talk about it
Dylan

how real are the padres? Within a week or so, they’ll have added Soto, Bell, Drury, and Tatis is coming back really soon. Top that off with Clevinger and Snell pitching better than ever, they look scary.
Anthony Franco
3:01
I think they're the second-best team in the NL now, but I'd probably have them behind the Dodgers, Mets and Braves in the pecking order in terms of likelihood to win the pennant
They've got no chance of winning the division, which means they can't get the first-round bye. That hurts and puts them behind the clubs with a shot at it for me
3:03
But the roster is awesome obviously. Still think it's a little behind the Dodgers (largely because Grisham and Cronenworth haven't looked as good as expected) but not dramatically so. They're going to make the playoffs and I sure as hell wouldn't want to face them

Angels fans are getting more and more fed up. Every year we end up selling. Our farm system is bad and Artie moreno doesn’t  know what he is doing. If we lose otanhi I am finished

Anthony, which side of the trade or hold onto Shohei Ohtani are you on? The Angels could have traded him and pulled in a haul larger than the Nats got from the Padres.
Arte Moreno just looks at the money that Ohtani generates. He doesn’t seem to be doing what is best for the organization but only what is best for Arte. If

Dueling Ohtani takes here
3:04
I think I'd have kept him, even from a strict baseball perspective. Without Ohtani, I don't know where this team goes with Trout and Rendon on the books forever and the former having more and more injury concerns
3:06
So I'd push it in for 2023, somewhat similarly to what they've been doing but with more emphasis on their lack of position player depth. They've been burned by bad pitching time and again and they really focused on that this past offseason, but I thought ignoring the middle infield was a pretty bad misstep and that's been a major problem in hindsight
They need shortstop and bullpen help badly, and probably another outfielder after the Marsh trade

do you think that Juan Sotos decision to sign with San Diego will influence what Trea Turner will do. We need to make him top priority
Anthony Franco
3:07
Soto didn't sign an extension with San Diego, he just got traded there. Still seems pretty likely he'll go to free agency a couple years from now
I don't think it'll affect how the Dodgers approach Turner's negotiations, no

Jays getting dissed on for not getting the “elite” reliever. Aside from Hader, which RP that was moved was that much better than Bass?
Anthony Franco
3:08
Hmm yeah probably not many that I feel strongly about being huge upgrades over Bass. Jorge López, probably Robertson but it's close. No one else really jumps out off the top of my head
SuperSoto
3:08
Question, my friend and I were talking and he said that he sees Soto as a 50 homer type, but I think with his obp and pitch selection he’s more of a high 30 low 40 type. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Yeah I'm with you. I think he has the power to hit 50 but don't think he swings enough to get there
Not saying that's a bad thing, to be clear. His approach is one of the things that makes him so great
Angels fan

There was an Article in rumors about making trades after the deadline. Is there anything we can do now

Who's the best player that gets through waivers and gets traded in August?
Anthony Franco
3:10
Waiver trades are a thing of the past. I encourage everyone to read Steve's post from this morning if you want a rules refresher. He did a great job on it
3:11
Generally speaking, there are ways to add around the margins still but you're going to make any huge changes anymore (unless you think Conforto qualifies, I guess)

Simmons. Heyward, Bote... Why are the Cubs holding on to them? Move on so we can see the future. Why does it seem like teams cut pitchers without much hesitation, but trfuse to let go of a bad position contract?
Anthony Franco
3:12
Bote's been hurt so I can sort of buy giving him the benefit of the doubt
The other guys, I don't know. Maybe they love Heyward as a person and it's worth it to keep him around for the younger guys since no one's helping you with the money anyways? Don't get why they signed Simmons in the first place
Astros fan
3:13
What happened with the Cubs? Were they betting the other teams would give in at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:13
Might as well stick on Chicago for a minute
Generally speaking, I've been down on the majority of stuff they've done since last deadline (which, to their credit, they killed)
3:14
They feel pretty directionless to me. The offseason was about signing fine veterans who aren't real difference-makers to shorter-term commitments. Then they play this deadline pretty slowly, although I think they were right to sell high on Scott Effross
3:15
I can't blast Hoyer and his staff without knowing exactly what was on the table, obviously. Maybe the offers they got for Contreras they really felt were less valuable than a first-round pick. But I find that pretty difficult to believe, and this felt like a really good time to move Happ if they're not planning on extending him
3:16
From the outside, it seems suboptimal. If the Rockies had done this (and to some extent, they did, but with far less impactful players), they'd be getting skewered. Haven't seen that kind of criticism of the Cubs really but I think it'd be fair
Berry Berry Good
3:16
Iglesias was a top reliever who got moved.
Anthony Franco
3:17
Ah yeah, Iglesias is a good call. Required taking on a lot of money and I get why the Jays didn't, but he's better than Bass

Of all the MLB rookies right now how well do you think Vargas of the Dodgers will rate as a major leaguer?
Anthony Franco
3:18
I'd keep him behind the Julio Rodríguez, Bobby Witt, Adley Rutschman, Michael Harris group of top prospects who have already played well over extended stretches at the big league level
But I love Vargas, feels like a top 20-ish prospect in the game to me
