3:00
Hey everybody, just wrapping up the Justin Upton post. I'll be back in about 3 minutes
3:04
Ok that's wrapped up
Let's get rolling
Chris W
3:04
Will the Yankees ever be able to get over the hump to defeat the Astros? What do they need to finally get it done?
Anthony Franco
3:05
I really don't think there's a huge secret to winning in the postseason. Being a good team helps, but to some extent, you kind of have to be willing to shrug and acknowledge that stuff happens in a seven game series and the best team doesn't always win
3:06
Could they beat the Astros? Absolutely. I think you could argue the Yankees are already a better team than Houston, and they may have home-field for an ALCS matchup this October. But no matter what, it's still going to be like a 55-45 thing at best
Astros are Yankees DADDY!
3:06
Astros look like the best team in AL.  They have some holes just like all teams.  The reports of Bell today aren't surprising.  What do you think it would take to get him to Houston?
Anthony Franco
3:07
Haha, so this guy would disagree
3:08
Bell makes a ton of sense there, sure. Upgrading over Gurriel would probably be my top priority if I were them
3:09
I don't think it would cost them Hunter Brown. Maybe somebody in the Korey Lee or Pedro Leon tier?
Giantsphan
3:09
Hi Anthony, thanks for the chat!  Do the Giants sell or buy as we approach the deadline?  Thank you.
Anthony Franco
3:10
Think they have to buy assuming they're still within 2-3 games at the deadline, which I expect they will be. It's an aging but still good roster that won 107 games last year, they've earned the right to go for it if they're close
3:11
Catching's obviously a huge need. Could use another high-leverage bullpen arm, maybe an extra infielder since Longoria's hurt a lot and La Stella isn't hitting again
Mickey777
3:11
Odds that Juan Soto is traded by August 2nd?  If traded what is your best guess as to where he goes?  Who do the Yankees acquire at the deadline?  Thanks
Anthony Franco
3:12
Would still put it under 50/50 that Soto goes this summer. If I had to guess, idk, 35%? Dodgers and Mariners would be my top two picks if someone got him but any of the teams Steve listed as best fits this week (aside from maybe the Mets because of the division complications) feel plausible
3:13
Yankees are likely to look for a Gallo upgrade and probably another back-end starter with Severino hurt
Ryan
3:13
What big move does Seattle make? Soto, Happ, Luis Castillo or other?
Anthony Franco
3:13
They'll probably be in on all those guys, but I'm more confident in Castillo or Happ moving this summer than Soto
3:15
I like the fit on all of them basically, guess I'd choose Happ as the likeliest out of that group. They're in a pretty enviable spot. No real needs (aside from perhaps second base) but the opportunity to add an impact player somewhere because of the farm depth and payroll flexibility. They're exciting, glad they got back into it
EddieB
3:15
What's your thoughts on Shane Baz?  Second time he had the sprained elbow.  Seems like Tommy John is next.  Worth holding in a keeper league?
Anthony Franco
3:15
Have to keep him I think. Elbow sprain is certainly alarming but he's so talented that if you assume he needs surgery and that doesn't wind up happening, you'll regret it
Nick Krall
3:16
If you had to guess, what team do you think will land Castillo? And what prospects do you think they will send my way?
Anthony Franco
3:17
Dodgers. Michael Busch and Andy Pages?
Denny Doyle
3:18
What are the chances Valera gets a call up soon?  Is he advanced enough to bypass AAA?  Not like they're getting much  from Straw...
Anthony Franco
3:18
It's pretty risky, I don't really see it. Straw isn't hitting but he's defending well and they just signed him to a long-term extension. It'd be a tough pill to give up on that quickly
3:19
Valera's playing well but he's striking out more than a quarter of the time in Double-A. He'd probably be a better hitter than Straw right away but there's some chance the strikeouts pile up really quickly when he faces advanced pitching for the first time
Chris
3:20
Hypothetical-- If the Mets were willing to trade Alvarez but were unable to acquire Soto.  What type of return could Alvarez bring to improve the Mets for a possible playoff run?  Thank you.
Anthony Franco
3:21
I don't expect this to happen but he'd return a whole hell of a lot. Would the Diamondbacks put Zac Gallen out there if Alvarez is on the table as a headliner? Maybe
Dodgers fan
3:21
Do we really need soto or Castillo. We have been so good. Also I read that soto will not sign an extension
Anthony Franco
3:21
Need either, no. But that didn't stop them from getting Trea Turner or Max Scherzer last year
3:23
As for whether Soto would sign an extension, I don't think it really matters. You'd love to keep him around forever, but if you're "only" getting two or two and a half years from him, that's absurdly valuable. Turner might walk this winter but that doesn't negate what he's done over the past year-plus
Arthur Dent
3:23
Which team do you predict will make the biggest move between now and the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:23
Dodgers and Twins are the teams I consider most likely to land one of the Montas/Castillo/Mahle group. I still expect that to be the biggest move made over the next two weeks
Artie moreno
3:24
We should take Otani and trout off the table and open up the rest of the team for business. Go for broke
Anthony Franco
3:25
Like trade everyone else? I don't see what that really achieves. Most of the roster won't be appealing to other teams, and dealing somebody like Taylor Ward makes it that much harder to win before Ohtani can hit free agency after next year
They should trade Thor and Lorenzen for upper minors talent, but I don't see why they'd move Ward or Brandon Marsh right now
if the Shoei fits
3:26
Other than Shoei / Soto, who is one star who could be unexpectedly traded in the offseason?
Anthony Franco
3:27
Hmm, I could see St. Louis shaking things up and trading away Jack Flaherty maybe. If the Phillies fall flat on their face in the second half, maybe they consider dealing Aaron Nola next winter? Don't expect either to happen, but as long shots I consider vaguely plausible, sure
The trade
3:28
I've seen that Jordan Groshans + Yosver Zulueta would get a deal done for Luis Castillo. Seems light to me, no?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Yeah but it seems like Zulueta's stock is really shooting up in prospect circles this year. If you buy him as a Top 100 caliber prospect at the end of the season, then that's a reasonable ask. Whether he's that caliber of player is a better question for one of the prospect experts. I've never seen him
