Anthony Franco

Hey everyone, hope you all had a great week!
4:00
Lots of questions in here with the deadline coming up so I'll move quicker than usual today
Cubs catchers
4:00
Is Gomes going to be traded (seems he is good value for next year), or Barnhart (little reason to keep with emergence of Amaya)?
Anthony Franco
4:01
I find Gomes the more plausible trade candidate. Barnhart's extra year under contract isn't all that appealing with how poorly he's hitting
Adam
4:01
Would Balazovic for Carlson work for the Twins and Cards? Or at least be the framework for a trade?
Anthony Franco
4:01
Cardinals should do better than that if they move Carlson
SOLOOOO

Many are asking about whether Ohtani will be traded, but I wonder how many teams have the prospects and the ability to make the deal worthwhile (trip to the world series this year). Rays, Dodgers (Won't happen), Orioles (Won't give up prospects), Rangers, Astros/Braves (Don't have farm system). Really the rays and rangers might be the only legitimate offers for him. He is an incredible talent but unless I feel I can win a world series this season, I am not giving up prospect capital to get him.
Anthony Franco
4:03
I think more teams will feel they have a legitimate chance to win the title than you do. The '21 Braves had the worst record of any playoff team, last year's Phillies were the final seed in the National League. If you get in, you can get hot and make a run. It's a lot more variable than the NBA and probably even NFL playoffs
4:04
Skeptical the Angels will pull the trigger on Ohtani anyways -- it was easier for me to see before they swept the Yankees -- but I think teams like the Giants, Twins, Brewers, Orioles (who should be willing to give up prospect talent at this point, they're really good) would all legitimately be in if the Angels considered it
The Rangers fan
4:05
Any chance the Rangers land a starter and a left fielder?
Anthony Franco
4:05
I'd be surprised if they don't get a starter. Left fielder's not as pressing but I would like to see another left-handed bat mixed in there
Awesome Kim
4:05
Will we see another blockbuster trade from Mr. Preller
Anthony Franco
4:06
(Padres)
I don't think they're in position to push in like that again. The farm talent's thinning out and competing this year is a stretch when you're as far out as they are
4:07
Whether they pull off a blockbuster in the other direction is more borderline. Still lean towards no but if you consider moving Snell or Hader a blockbuster, I don't think that's out of the question
Social Climber
4:07
Is there any hope for Daulton Varsho to salvage his season and the trade that brought him to the Jays?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Never thought he was repeating last year's power output, which is why I liked the deal a little more on Arizona's end. He's better than a .213 hitter with a .276 OBP, though, and the outfield defense is still exceptional
4:09
I think the Jays will mostly come out fine in that trade but if they thought Varsho was going to be a 4-5 WAR player annually when they made the deal, they probably overrated him. He's a good player, not a star
4:10
Other thing to note is that Gabriel Moreno isn't exactly lighting the world on fire in Arizona. He's been ok, I guess. Lourdes is having the best season out of anyone involved and was clearly the third piece of the trade at the time
Ohtani
4:10
If Ohtani was traded, what do you think the prospect return would look like? Soto 2.5 years went for 2 recently graduated top prospects, 2 Top 50 prospects and one more lottery ticket.
Anthony Franco
4:11
Yeah I just can't see Ohtani bringing back anything like that. San Diego was getting Soto for (what they hoped to be) three playoff runs. An acquiring team on Ohtani is getting him for one
4:12
The Turner/Scherzer deal still feels like the better comp to me. Two very good prospects (Ruiz and Gray were borderline top 50 guys at the time) and two mid-level prospects. Chance to reinvigorate the farm system for the Angels, of course, but I can't see them getting the equivalent of MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, James Wood and Robert Hassell
4:13
Two months of any player -- even the best player on the planet -- just has a cap on the amount of value you can expect. Even if the Braves (the best team in MLB in my view) landed Ohtani, they'd be well below 50% to win the World Series because the MLB playoffs are super variable
Jorge78
4:13
Does Jarred Kelenick get the dumbest injury of the year award?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Feels like we see the "broke a bone while hitting something out of anger" injury happen like two or three times a season but it'll be up there
Big decision
4:15
When Nelson Cortes returns in early August, I'll need to drop another pitcher. Who's the most droppable between Dean Kremer, Kyle Bradish, Brayan Bello, Andres Munoz, and Bryce Miller?
Anthony Franco
4:15
One of the O's guys, probably Kremer
Sox Fan
4:15
Someone called in to MLB Radio today and proposed Lucas Giolito and Tim Anderson for Bobby Miller and Gavin Lux. Is that a reasonable swap?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Way too much for the Dodgers to give up
4:16
Probably would've been skewed in Chicago's favor even if Anderson were having a typical season, but it'd at least be a defensible ask in that case. Unfortunately, he's been terrible
Philly A's
4:17
What outfielder would/should the Phillies target at the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:17
Steve's got a Front Office email coming out today arguing for them to make a push for Candelario as their big deadline bat, so keep an eye out for that
4:19
Obviously, Candy's not an outfielder so it's not an answer to your question specifically. Pham could fit, maybe Grichuk. Don't think it has to be an impact bat, just someone who can play left field and keep Schwarber at DH
Kranny
4:19
If Fried has no setbacks, the Braves’ main need is a healthy BP arm or two. Does this mean Grissom is likely a goner?
Anthony Franco
4:20
They could get a rental reliever or two by dealing from the middle of the farm system
4:21
Arcia's breakout at least makes it feasible they trade Grisham if they find a controllable bullpen target. But if they're looking at like, Keynan Middleton, they can do that pretty easily with a prospect or two who aren't on the doorstep of the majors
Philly A's
4:21
Hey Anthony!  MLBTR missed Ryan Noda going on the IL for a fracture jaw.. I mean I get it, it's the A's.   Also, saw a lot of negative comments about the A's trading Fujinami- but wasnt he was always a rental player signing a 1 year deal where the A's would never resign?
Anthony Franco
4:22
Didn't have a headline on Noda but mentioned that in here. Had a rapid succession of A's moves that night, which is why I put the final two together
4:23
Fuji was an obvious trade candidate, yeah. They could've re-signed him, I guess, but it's not like they're a volatile middle reliever away from being competitive. If Easton Lucas is a better MLB reliever in 2024, that wouldn't be at all surprising
