Hey everyone, hope you're wrapping up a good week!
It's been a hell of a week. Let's discuss
JAYSFANATIC
3:00
Is there ANY chance the Jays sign one of Rodon Correa or Swanson? Move Merrifield to the OF and BO to 2nd
Anthony Franco
3:01
Won't say zero chance but it feels like a longshot. Rodón seems more plausible than another huge investment in a position player that also dictates moving Bichette off shortstop
Jeremy
3:01
What do the Yankees need to do still to have a better roster on Opening Day than they did in the ALCS?
Anthony Franco
3:03
I wrote about this yesterday in greater detail, so I encourage you to read through that. Broadly speaking, adding a left fielder and getting another depth starter feel like the goals. Not having to rely on Hicks or Cabrera in left would make them better than they were at the end of last season
Adam
3:03
Could the Twins and White Sox really make a trade involving Kepler?
Anthony Franco
3:04
Eh I don't know why Minnesota would want to fix the ChiSox's right field problem. Depends on the offers and I think it makes sense from Chicago's point of view, but intra-division trades between hopeful contenders are really tough to line up
Thank you for the chat!
3:04
What needs to be attached prospect wise to NYY Hicks to move him in a shallow CF market? Would MIA work for a corner OF (better roster construction)? Could WSN take on salary for the prospect, maybe even include a Rainey or someone similar? 3/30 doesn't seem incredibly onerous.
Anthony Franco
3:06
I think Hicks would get around half that as a free agent, so shedding all the money's a tough sell. It wouldn't take a top 100 type talent but I'd guess someone towards the back half of the organizational top ten
3:07
I don't think Miami or any of the other CF needy teams would view Hicks as a great option. He hasn't posted above-average defensive marks there since 2017 and has been a below-average hitter two years running
Thank you for the chat!
3:07
If MIN doesn't land a SS, would IKF for Kepler make sense?
Anthony Franco
3:08
I'd rather have Kepler but it's not a crazy framework. Could probably tinker around the edges with a mid-level prospect to make it work
It'd be an odd look for Minnesota to trade for IKF after they had him for a day last spring, but if they're not worried about the optics of it, I think it makes some sense
Thank you for the chat!
3:08
Would NYY Peraza be a decent starting point for Reynolds? Alternatively, which 1:1 ARI OF could be a fair swap?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Peraza-plus for Reynolds seems about right. Don't know that there's a 1-for-1 swap with Arizona that works
Wouldn't give up Varsho for Peraza. Wouldn't give up Peraza for McCarthy. Thomas is closest but I'd prefer Peraza personally
Andrew
3:10
Thoughts on what free agents are looking likely for the Padres to round out their roster post-Xander?
Anthony Franco
3:11
Feels like they need another starting pitcher. It's hard to tell where Seidler's drawing the line on the budget, but they do fit for Senga nicely if he's just cutting blank checks
3:12
If they're tapped out on that kind of addition, which would be understandable, then a Drew Smyly or Ross Stripling makes sense. Also need another corner bat, even if just someone in the Corey Dickerson or Trey Mancini mold
Free Bird
3:12
Any thoughts on the Rule 5 draft?
Anthony Franco
3:13
Not really. I've heard of about half the players who got taken but don't know much about any of them. I thought it was pretty funny St. Louis took a 32-year-old whose only MLB experience came back in 2014 though
3:14
Hopefully Rodríguez makes their Opening Day bullpen. It'd be a cool story
Perry On The Grill
3:14
Do the angels actually go over the Lux Tax this time? The interest in Contreras was, well, interesting, and shows we are still wanting to spend.
Anthony Franco
3:15
Not really clear how far they were willing to go. If they were in the mix at three years and like $16MM per, that's interesting and suggests Minasian's being honest about having the ability to spend but doesn't necessarily hint at luxury tax levels
3:16
They're about $20MM shy of it right now. My guess is they'll stick shorter term but add a couple more pieces that bring them within $5MM or so by Opening Day and see where the team's at
If they're competing midseason and there's a chance to improve via trade, hopefully new ownership (which should be in place by the deadline) signs off on going over with the urgency to compete next year
Jeremy
3:16
Senga or Bassitt: who is going to be better in 2023
Anthony Franco
3:17
I'll take Bassitt for strictly year one
More safety in the MLB track record
Anita
3:17
HI Anthony, I saw a comment which I found interesting... signing Christian Vazquez (great defender and arm to hold runner from stealing which is going to increase) and then use 2 of our catchers to trade for a pitcher and outfielder.... thoughts
Anthony Franco
3:17
Believe Anita's referring to the Blue Jays here
3:19
I don't mind it in theory but think it's hard to orchestrate in practice. Vázquez isn't going to want to sign somewhere where the playing time outlook is jammed as it currently is. I think they'd have to make the trades you're referring to first, which means you'd need him to agree to wait out the market while you deal two catchers to other teams that ostensibly could also be interested in signing him
3:20
Which he probably doesn't want to do and also forces Atkins and company to deal their in-house guys very quickly to ensure they don't lose Vázquez
Jason
3:20
Olney had a report that the Yankees were planning "something big" , mentioned Correa .. Why not ask the Angels about Trout? New Jersey guy, might waive his no trade. Makes sense for both sides really .. Thoughts? (not a crazy yankee fan btw)
Anthony Franco
3:20
Angels aren't doing it this winter
3:21
Maybe next offseason if the team's bad and they lose Ohtani, leading new ownership to decide to nuke the whole thing. For this offseason though, they're going for it
Astros
3:21
Where do we get our catcher? could Urquidy for Jansen make some sense?
Anthony Franco
3:22
Don't think Urquidy has that kind of pull alone but it's not a crazy framework if you throw in a prospect or build a multi-player deal that also gets Toronto another reliever
Duffy Scliff
3:22
What does the starting infield look like for the Red Sox on opening day?
