Anthony Franco

Hey everyone, hope you all had a relaxing holiday!
Top Market
3:01
Which of the big remaining free agents will sign next? Bellinger, Chapman, Snell, Montgomery, Imanaga, or Hader?
Anthony Franco
3:01
I'll guess Monty, then Hader
Ben Cherington’s Neighbor
3:02
Who would require a greater prospect return for the White Sox… Cease or Robert? Asking for a friend.
Anthony Franco
3:02
Definitely Robert. Two more years of club control and he's the better player to begin with
3:03
I think Cease will be traded, I'd be very surprised if the Sox moved Robert
Giants
3:03
Will they open the season with all of Conforto, Yaz, and Haniger on the roster now that Lee joined? Would Conforto or Haniger have any value on the market?
Anthony Franco
3:04
Yeah I'd guess they keep all those guys. Conforto and Haniger are both on above-market deals at this point. They'd have to pay down some of the money to trade either
3:05
Yaz would have some value but he's a better corner defender than either Haniger or Conforto so I doubt they'll be anxious to move him
Dano
3:05
How many minor league deals/invitations to spring training are teams allowed to give out?  Is there a limit?  Or is the limit based on roster size/needs/budget, etc?
Anthony Franco
3:08
No limit on minor league deals. I'm not sure what the cap is for Spring Training roster size, although theoretically you could release a player during ST if you wanted to add someone else on an NRI
3:09
The bigger constraint is that players who are sorting through a handful of NRIs are generally looking for the team that has the best path to an MLB roster spot. If one team already has 20-30 guys on an NRI and another has 10, the latter club is probably more attractive to that free agent

Would a Shota Imanaga deal be about the same as the Senga deal last year, or did Yamamoto up the ante for all Japanese pitchers going forward?
Ryan
3:09
Any chance the Reds sign Imanaga?
Anthony Franco
3:11
Imanaga probably beats Senga but I don't see that tied to Yamamoto. Senga's success in Year 1 is what'd give Imanaga a bit of a boost as opposed to Yamamoto (who everyone agrees is much better than Imanaga) getting 325
3:12
As for the Reds, that feels unlikely. Makes sense from a roster perspective but he probably prices himself out
Ryan
3:12
Do you think Teams are hesitant to give Snell a 5 or 6 year deal because of his inconsistency?  Do you think he would sign a 3 year deal  with a good AAV, making him a possible option for the Reds?
Anthony Franco
3:13
Still feel pretty good about Snell getting at least six years
3:15
He's coming off an absurdly dominant four-month stretch, had a Cy Young season before that, and is a top 5-10 pitcher in terms of missing bats. I can't see how he wouldn't earn more than Carlos Rodón did

Happy 2024! (almost) What if the Jays trade for Brandon Drury (Angels) for the infield then go after 1 of  Max Kepler (Twins), Lane Thomas (Nationals) or Christian Yelich (Brewers) in trade. Depending who is trade, sign JD Martinez to DH if he is interested.  Which would work best or be possible. Thanks for 2023
Anthony Franco
3:17
Likewise! I liked the Drury fit more before they signed IKF (which was a weird move), but Martinez at DH makes a lot of sense. There's still room on the roster for a Kepler or Thomas type, sure. Don't see Yelich getting traded

Michael A Taylor would be a great addition to the Reds. If I remember right, they were checking in on him about a month back ago. He would be a perfect fit. They only have have one true centerfielder and they need a right handed bat that hits lefties well. He is both of those and would be a good late game defensive replacement for Steer. I think he made 4.5 mil last season. Do you think he signs for more than that?
Anthony Franco
3:18
Agree that he's a good fit for the Reds. Two years at around $6-7MM annually for me

If you were running the Red Sox (they should have hired you this offseason ...!), would you give up a top prospect like Marcelo Meyer, Kyle Teal, or Roman Anthony to fill a roster weakness like SP or 2B?  Who might realistically be available for one of those prospects?  Wondering how focused Boston is on winning in 2024.
Anthony Franco
3:21
Not at second base, can address that with more of a stopgap type like Kyle Farmer trade or Amed Rosario in FA. I wouldn't trade Mayer at all -- it's just a sell low coming off the shoulder surgery -- and would be reluctant to move Anthony. Putting Teel in a package for a starting pitcher with multiple years of control seems fine to me, though
3:23
Generally speaking, I'd lean more aggressively on the pitching front there. I like the core enough that I buy them as a legitimate playoff contender. They obviously haven't done anything yet, but there's enough smoke that I'd be surprised if they don't come away with a mid-rotation or better arm. It's early

Hi Anthony and happy New Year. Snell seems to be favored over Montgomery based on his track record but Monty might be the safer choice based on consistency. How do you see it? And do you think they will hold up the market like Yamamoto did or do you think teams will start to pivot to the next tier? Thanks
Anthony Franco
3:24
That seems a fair characterization on Snell vs. Monty. More stability with the latter because the command is better, clearly higher upside with Snell. I wouldn't expect either to hold things up the way Yamamoto did
3:25
Almost all the big-market teams were on Yamamoto, which won't be the case for those guys. And Yamamoto had a hard deadline that made him likely to sign before Christmas (could've run it into January if he really wanted to), whereas Boras has shown he's willing to take things into late January or February, even on his top guys

Jays's moves are a mystery. As of right now, over/under 90 wins next year?
Anthony Franco
3:26
I'd take the under on 90 with this roster but assuming they add another bat, I'll go slight over
Dave
3:26
Do you think Dodgers are seriously thinking about Hader? Does not seem to be Friedman’s MO for relief pitchers.                    Happy New Year
Anthony Franco
3:27
I don't think they're doing Hader as well. They did go big on Kenley a few years ago, but it's a little different when it's your own player
Robert Stephenson maybe

Are the tigers done for the offseason?
Anthony Franco
3:29
They should add an infielder. Add a Gio Urshela type to cover a few positions with all the uncertainty they have on the dirt
Shortstop would be ideal, but alas, there are no good shortstops
Dave
3:30
Best option for additional starter for LAD. Trade or FA. Also pitcher’s name Thanks for chats in 2023. Premium MLBTR service is definitely worth it.
Anthony Franco
3:32
Appreciate that Dave! A back-end innings type to round it out seems fine. Giolito's the higher end of that as an upside play, but someone like Lorenzen could work if they wanted to go cheaper at this point

Does Jordan Hicks sign as as a closer or as a set-up man?
