Hey all, hope you're doing well! Going to wrap up right around 3:00 Central today but we'll get going a few minutes early
Chicken in Philly?
2:53
Which free agent do you think might add the most value to a club for their cost? I’m thinking Christian Walker or Michael Conforto (outside of SF).
Anthony Franco
2:54
I don't think Walker's a viable fit. They don't seem to want to move Harper back into the outfield and don't have room at DH. Conforto works if they trade Marsh or Rojas, sure
Gator
2:54
Could you see the Red Sox making a run at Gallen?  Feel like that staff could use some vets…
Anthony Franco
2:55
They can try but I don't see why the Diamondbacks would trade him this offseason. He'd still have a ton of interest at the deadline if they're not competing
Cards Fan
2:55
If Cards do trade Arenado, who do you think is most likely to trade for him?  I'm thinking LAD, HOU (if they don't resign Bregman, or NYY).
Anthony Franco
2:56
Yankees make the most sense for me. Trading for a somewhat expensive player who is a borderline star is a very Yankees-style move. They have an obvious need at third base and should have more payroll space to accommodate a chunk of the Arenado than Houston would
Dodgers doing this would basically push Muncy to the bench. Don't think it's worth it

Thanks for the chat. What’s the chances Cleveland brings back Bieber, Boyd, and Cobb for next year?
Anthony Franco
2:58
Can't imagine they're doing all three but any one of them makes sense in a vacuum. Guess I'd consider Bieber the likeliest since he's been such a key piece of the franchise for so long. If he's looking at one year or two with an opt-out anyway, could prefer to do that with an infrastructure he knows so well

If a Crochet to the Red Sox trade is built around Abreu+, what is the plus?
Anthony Franco
3:00
I assume the White Sox would rather center a Crochet return around a top-tier prospect than a good but not elite outfielder who'll burn two or three control years while the team isn't competitive
3:01
They did center the Fedde deal around a young big leaguer (Miguel Vargas) so we'll see, but Crochet's their big remaining trade chip and they're so far away from being respectable
3:02
Can't see Boston doing Abreu and one of their top four guys so if the White Sox are in on Abreu as a headliner, I'd guess a Braden Montgomery or Miguel Bleis type as a secondary piece. Think Chicago could do better elsewhere though

Hey Anthony, I listened to both the top 50 chat and the Mega Podcast and there was not a lot of Jays content. So i ask do you believe there will be any Major FA interest in the Jays if there is no extension for Vlad in place??
Anthony Franco
3:04
Nah I wouldn't read much into that. Only so much we can cover in one two-hour podcast or chat. I think we all expect the Jays to be pretty active in FA. Tim put them as his team for Bregman. I like the Santander fit, they'll be involved on bullpen help
Mets Mike
3:04
So, the new rumor that sounds like it has legs and does make sense to me is a 7/160 offer by the mets to adames to likely play 3b.
Anthony Franco
3:05
Don't want to put too much stock into the Adames rumor unless/until it's confirmed by a reporter with a more established track record or closer ties to the Mets
3:07
It's a reasonable enough idea on paper, though I'd be surprised if they're already made a formal offer at that level a week into the offseason. If he accepts, they're basically locking him into third base and moving Vientos over to first. It's hard to fit Alonso on the team at that point, takes a chunk of the money they could devote to Soto and rotation help
3:08
None of which is to say that I don't see the logic for making that kind of move, but I'd be surprised if it's the first thing the Mets do without seeing how the offseason starts to shake out
Cat Herder
3:08
Does Detroit look to move Tork, have him start in Toledo, or make it a 'make or break' year?  Mize seems to be on his way out, but it's tough to read Torkelson's fate.
Anthony Franco
3:09
I'd give Tork one more chance and still expect that's what they'll do, but I know Tim is convinced they're trading him and jumping on one of the free agent first basemen (probably Walker) to add a clearer impact RH bat
metsfan
3:09
Who's your pick for the Opening Day starter for the Mets in '25?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Burnes
Ethan
3:09
Pirates will likely need to make multiple trades to add to the offense. Daulton Varsho and Lamonte Wade seem like great fits. Think they can swing those without depleting the MLB pitching staff?
Anthony Franco
3:11
Wade, yes. I could see the Giants moving him and looking for a more traditional power bat at first base. Wade felt like more of a Farhan guy than the type of player Posey seems to want there. He's got one year of arbitration control at a near-$5MM salary, so the prospect return wouldn't be much
I don't think the Jays are trading Varsho. Not a good time to do it even if they were retooling since he's rehabbing rotator cuff surgery. They're also planning to make another run at competing and already super thin in the outfield
Getz
3:12
What is a reasonable return for Crochet?  I think of him as a top of the rotation starter, with fewer bullets thrown than some others.  Others consider that a bad thing (not a lot of experience), but hopefully he dispelled some of that with 32 starts and almost 150 IP.
Ugh - I meant to finish that with an actual question about Crochet.  Could he get someone like Mayo (Os) or Meyer (Red Sox) AND a couple lottery picks?  Or am I expecting / hoping for too much?
Anthony Franco
3:13
A little lower than that. He's kind of a fringe ace with two years of club control. It's super valuable but not so rare that teams are going to part with a top 10 overall prospect
3:14
They should do a little better than the Cease trade. A top 30-50 prospect as a headliner seems totally reasonable, but I wouldn't expect someone quite at the Mayer/Mayo caliber of "potential foundational hitter on the doorstep of the big leagues"
Joe J.
3:14
Does a Jordan Montgomery for Marcus Stroman bad contract swap make sense?
Anthony Franco
3:16
Doesn't seem like things ended super great between the Yankees and Monty either, but I get the idea. Stroman's a bit cheaper and coming off a less bad season, so Arizona would probably have to throw in a mid-level prospect or two if the Yankees wanted to take a flier on Monty
Matty A
3:16
Where will Kenley Jansen and Tyler O’Neill be playing in 2025? Will either of them return to Boston?
Anthony Franco
3:17
I'd be shocked if Kenley returns. Feels like both sides are ready to move on there. Jays or Phillies make sense
3:18
I'd guess TON walks too but that's more about the Sox having other options in the outfield than any seeming bad blood. I picked the Giants but he could work for Detroit, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Cincinnati or Philly too
Elbow
3:18
Do you see the SD Padres' desire to get under the luxury tax last year as more indicative of a quiet-spending offseason coming up, or as more of a kind of financial reload to be able to continue spending money without as harsh of penalties?
Anthony Franco
3:19
The former. I think Peter Seidler was willing to spend beyond where the current ownership group is because he was extremely motivated to make the Padres relevant nationally (and succeeded)
Rizzo
3:20
What contract do you think Gerrit Cole would have gotten on the open market?
Anthony Franco
3:20
Around 3/135. I think he could've beaten Wheeler money and set the AAV record if he wanted to max out
