Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well!
Going to have a lot of news in the next few hours, should be an interesting day

Anthony,  does the Teoscar Hernandez trade to Seattle seem balanced.  It feels like Toronto could have got more for Teoscar.

Tell me how the trade of Teoscar for Swanson makes any sense.  Hernandez leaves a hitters park and Swanson enters one.  That has to have a negative effect on both players doesn't it?  There has to be other factors besides their contracts to make sense of this.
Anthony Franco
3:03
Made mutual sense to me actually. Mentioned this in the Wednesday chat as well but Hernández is the kind of guy who has less actual trade appeal than you'd think if you just took a surface-level glance
3:04
He's a very good hitter, but he provides basically nothing on defense and he's down to his final year of club control at an estimated $14MM. That's still a fine price -- he certainly wasn't on the verge of getting non-tendered -- but it's also not the kind of profile that's going to have teams dying to grab him. We've seen Hunter Renfroe (who's a cheaper but worse version of this) bounce around the league the past few years
3:05
If you're just talking 2023 roster, Hernández is more valuable than Swanson. Seattle had the financial breathing room to take it on and their bullpen is loaded. Toronto's more up against it payroll wise and has a mediocre bullpen. Fits both their needs pretty well, and the Jays grab an interesting pitching prospect out of the deal

I'm seeing a lot of "fan" proposals from teams on what St Louis will need to give up to get a catcher. While I realize you have to give to get, there's not a catcher in the league they're giving up Walker for. If that's the ask, I would think Vazquez just costs money, and they should be able to bid enough to get him. I see Gorman being floated as well. The Cardinal's are on record saying they want LH thump. He's that guy. I know he K's, but he's 22. And can we look at Alex Gordan and see a guy with that didn't cut it in the IF, and was a GG LFer. I'm putting Gorman in LF and running with the kid if I'm GM. Your thoughts? If he's what it takes to get Murphy, ok, but I'm not giving much else. Am I over valuing him?
Anthony Franco
3:06
I agree St. Louis wouldn't move Walker in virtually any scenario
3:07
As for Gorman, he definitely still has value -- both to STL and on the trade market. But he's not going to get you Murphy straight up or probably even as the headlining piece for him, just too much concern about the swing-and-miss
3:08
Could see him as the second piece in a Murphy trade. A straight swap of Gorman and Danny Jansen feels more viable to me

Could the Dodgers put together a trade package for Corbin Burnes built around Gavin Lux and who else would they need to include to get him?
Anthony Franco
3:09
No indication Milwaukee's interested in moving Burnes but starting a deal with Lux probably gets their attention. Do think you need one more of L.A.
Sorry
3:10
Need one more of L.A.'s top five-ish prospects, an Andy Pages type to get them thinking hard about doing it

Will Cody Bellenger (Sp?) be with the Dodgers at this time tomorrow?
Crash
3:10
If Bellinger does get non-tendered, how good of fit is he for the Jays?
Cody Bellinger
3:10
What do you think will happen
Anthony Franco
3:11
I think he's non-tendered and eventually signs somewhere else for a one-year deal in the $12MM range
3:12
Guess I'd pick the Cubs as my primary landing spot but the Jays make sense too. San Francisco fits, Miami, Texas kind of
Angels fan
3:12
Is the rotation set now. What about willie Adames or one of the big FA SS
Anthony Franco
3:12
I thought the rotation was fine before they signed Anderson so yeah, I think it's pretty well set now. Bring in a guy on a minor league deal or two as depth and call it a day
3:13
I don't think they're playing at the top of the shortstop market this winter, and it doesn't seem like Milwaukee has any desire to deal Adames
They're kind of in that next tier (Amed Rosario or Nicky Lopez via trade, Elvis Andrus in free agency), I think
Billy Beane
3:13
Any thoughts on me moving into an advisory role?
Anthony Franco
3:14
Seems like Beane just wanted less responsibility and they've been preparing Forst for this forever. I was a little surprised but it always felt like a matter of time

Do Astros go out and sign Abreu or is there a trade for a 1B option that might be under the radar?
Astros fan
3:14
What would it take to get Christian Walker from the D’backs?
Anthony Franco
3:15
Arizona would listen on Walker but you'd probably have to overpay to get him, since they want to compete next year. The Astros wouldn't give up Hunter Brown for him (nor should they), but I could see Arizona making that kind of ask. It's not like they need to deal him
3:16
Abreu fits, as do Bell and I guess Yuli (although they should aim higher). Trade possibilities: Rhys Hoskins, Rowdy Tellez, Garrett Cooper, maybe Walker or C.J. Cron
Rocky Balboa

What time is the deadline today to offer contracts to arbitration eligible players?
Anthony Franco
3:17
Ha I actually don't know. Have tried to dig this up and can't find a particularly reliable source. Seems like it's either 6:00 or 8:00 EST?
This is why they need to just publicly release the CBA

2022 offseason (Correa plus 2 back-end retread starters, 1 aging retread reliever, trading for a hit-first catcher who didn't hit, and 2 retread Padre pitchers (that the bench coach should have known better about) equaled 78 wins.  Repeating this now would be a disaster.  $35.1 million can get 1 immediate starter, 2 healthy relievers, and a serviceable catcher.
Anthony Franco
3:19
Yeah I think you can make a perfectly reasonable argument for spreading the resources around. I guess my counter would be that the rotation they're already entering next season with is in better shape than it was at this time 12 months ago because of the Mahle trade and Maeda's return to health
But if you wanted to say they should trade for Kevin Newman and sign Jameson Taillon and a couple middle relievers instead of a top four shortstop, I can see the case for it

What do you prefer to write/report about: trade deadline happenings, or winter hot stove happenings?
Anthony Franco
3:20
Interesting one, probably the offseason stuff
3:21
It's a slower build and feels a little more unpredictable. Deadline always some out-of-the-blue deals, of course, but there's a lot of "bad team X trades decent player Y to good team Z"
Which is fine but not the most interesting stuff in the world
