Hey all, hope you've had a good week!
I have some errands to run before my shift so I'll need to keep this one to an hour

Can you see the Yankees offering Gleyber a contract, say 2/30 with maybe an opt out and thus keeping Jazz at Third?  Thanks for the chat
Anthony Franco
3:02
Still lean towards letting him walk, moving Jazz back to second and seeing what alternatives are available at third. Gleyber's strong finish and impressive postseason makes a return more plausible though. Would've said there was zero chance the Yankees brought him back if you asked me in July
3:04
2/30 with an opt-out feels about right for the price point btw. That's about what we've got as our tentative contract prediction for the top 50

Emanuel Clase has given up as many runs this postseason (5) as in 74 innings of work in the regular season.  Is it just the mercurial nature of closers, or do you have any speculation what is going on?
Anthony Franco
3:05
Yeah I think it's just the mercurial nature of the position. Especially in October, relievers are working in such small samples
3:06
Clase has two blow ups because he's given up home runs to Kerry Carpenter, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Judge is the best hitter on the planet and Carpenter's a monster against RHP
Stanton's a flawed hitter at this point but obviously still capable of taking anyone deep on any swing. Clase has made a couple mistakes and he's gotten burned by really good players

What does Posey do for next year and beyond?
Ben
3:07
What is the most pressing need for the Giants in the offseason?  Willy Adames at SS, re-signing Snell SP, or going after Burnes SP
Anthony Franco
3:08
If they've got space in the budget for one of those three, I'd bring back Snell. It's probably more likely that they sign Adames in reality
Jake
3:08
How do you see the Brewers replacing Adames' production next season? Would they be willing to take a flyer on Arenado to play 3B with Ortiz moving over to short? Career OPS of 1.057 in Milwaukee and seemingly shouldn't be too expensive prospect or money-wise if Cards are willing to eat some dollars.
Anthony Franco
3:09
Don't think the Cardinals would be willing to pay the money down to the level necessary for Milwaukee to take Arenado on
3:10
Not the most exciting answer but I expect them to move Ortiz to short and patch third together between Frelick, Tyler Black and a Kevin Newman/Jose Iglesias type free agent
Arthur Dent
3:10
Assuming he gets posted, how do you see Hyeseong Kim panning out in the Majors.  Any word of what type of money it’s going to take to land him?  And… assuming the M’s don’t pick up Polanco’s option, any chnace Dipoto would consider him?
Anthony Franco
3:14
We're operating on the assumption that he will be posted. We're trying to get more information on the player but Baseball America's scouting report points to a utility role. I think the KBO production supports that. He hasn't hit for much power and the K/BB profile isn't anywhere near as impressive as what Jung Hoo Lee showed in the KBO
3:15
He's young, has some versatility and supposedly can play a plus second baseman. Tim made the case that teams that like him can squint a see a Nico Hoerner-lite profile and maybe buy him as a second division regular
3:16
We've loosely got him down for three years in the $8-10MM range annually but the error bars on the Asian signees are super high because teams project a lot of these guys (beyond the clear superstars like Yamamoto) in different ways
Viable fit for Seattle at second base, sure
Jackson Merrill
3:16
Will the Padres extend me this offseason, and if so, how many of my free agent years will they buy out, and how much will I get paid?
Anthony Franco
3:17
I'm sure they'll try. No idea what his willingness is to bypass a chance to get to FA at age 27 after a rookie season that impressive
3:20
Merrill's already shown more in the big leagues than Wander Franco had when he signed for $182MM. Wander was the consensus #1 prospect in MLB before his debut, but Merrill probably would've gotten there if the Padres had started him in Triple-A this season. I'd take him over James Wood or Dylan Crews if I were starting from scratch

Do you think the Reds' rumored interest in a Sonny Gray trade is legit? Hard to imagine them taking on that contract, even if the Cardinals cover some of it, given the Diamond Sports revenue uncertainty.
Anthony Franco
3:21
I don't doubt that their front office would love to make it happen but I agree that the contract will probably end up being prohibitive
3:22
Even if they could make it work, doubt it leaves room for the offensive upgrades they'll need to make this winter
Gadzooks
3:22
Should Houston wind up trading Kyle Tucker this winter, what would an ideal package look like?
Anthony Franco
3:22
Even one expensive season of Tucker should net multiple top prospects but I'd be shocked if the Astros trade him
3:24
They might be up against it financially but they're clearly still in win-now mode. They could offload Ryan Pressly's money for a modest return without dealing a huge hit to their chances of winning the West again
Kevin
3:24
what do you consider power hitting positions of the 9 players on the field, naturally not the pitcher but ?
Anthony Franco
3:25
In general, the corner outfield, first base and DH are the positions where I'd expect the most offense (which basically needs to involve some level of power production)
3:26
Wouldn't approach roster building that rigidly though. We've seen the middle infield, especially shortstop, develop into a position where teams get power production from guys like Witt, Henderson, Seager, Lindor etc.
3:27
There are a decent number of 20 homer catchers out there too, although it's rare to see a catcher with that kind of power and plus on-base skills. They tend to be power and defense only
Ryan
3:27
The Jays are at best are 3rd in the division. They have an awful farm system at the moment. Two big players with one year left on their contracts in Vlad and Bo. I know Vlad has mentioned wanting to stay. Why not trade them for prospects and try to resign next offseason? If  Vlad wants to stay long term why not sacrifice a year for the greater good?
Anthony Franco
3:28
I get it on paper but the 'trade, then re-sign' path rarely happens in practice. If you do trade Vlad this offseason, he could sign an extension with that team. Even if he gets to FA, maybe he's less keen on coming back to Toronto after he has had a year of playing somewhere else (especially if the Jays are still in a retool/rebuild situation)
3:30
I'm also skeptical the Shapiro/Atkins front office could make it through a retooling season. Even if they were confident they could circle back on Vlad in a year, are they still around if the Jays go 70-92 in 2025?

Why don't catchers hit more? They are right there tracking 150 pitches/game. How have none of them (almost none of them) used that for tendencies to improve hitting? Seeing that many pitches, there shouldn't be any excuse for a catcher to not have an excellent eye at the plate
Anthony Franco
3:32
Seems like whatever benefit you get from seeing a ton of pitchers is outweighed by the physical and mental toll of playing the position
Obviously they're also not particularly fast as a group -- which is both because they're in a crouch for half the game and generally tend to have stockier builds to hold up physically -- which isn't doing them any favors in beating out infield hits
