Thanks for joining our chat! All about original comic art!
9:02
Please remember to direct all comments/questions to other posters with "@name" so we know who it's meant for.
Here we go!

Hey Felix!  Multitasking w/ a simultaneous art-drop & chat, huh?  Impressive.
Felix Lu
9:04
Haha! I'm trying! We'll see how it goes. Got a full day, so trying to get as much done as I can early!
James

I'm on the edge of buying my most expensive piece. This particular one has been sitting for sale for about 3-4 years. After speaking to the artist about similar commissions it seems like a great deal. To good to be true?
Felix Lu
9:07
If I'm reading this correctly, you want a piece that has been sitting around. You're not sure about it's FMV (especially since it's been unsold for so long). However, the artist charges the same, or more, for a commission?
9:08
If that's the case, then get the piece that's been sitting. Because at least you know you like it. A commission is a crap shoot. There's no point in gambling here. You can try to negotiate a better price, too. Good luck!
James
9:09
Any chance you can get "Rob C" from CAF on the podcast? Would be fascinating to hear the backstory and road on attempting to collect EVERY single character that ever appeared in a comic series.
Felix Lu
9:09
I don't think I know him...shoot me a link to his CAF gallery! That's quite an undertaking, regardless...I wish him luck!
Rick Yankosky
9:10
@Felix Whose work, from a newer artist, not in your stable, are you most enjoying @ the moment?
Felix Lu
9:11
Man...tough one. Lots of artists whose work I admire, but not sure about "newer" artist. I think I've got all the new/young guys I like already!
Rick Yankosky
9:11
@James imo, if it speaks to you (& it sounds like it does) how can it be too good to be true?  get it!

Hi Felix! Happy Friday!!!  This question is for you or anyone that wants to offer input, as someone who has their finger on the pulse of original art and art collecting, recently has there been anything (sale, auction, trend) that has caught you by surprise?
Felix Lu
9:13
Recently? Maybe GREEN LANTERN #76? That was 2015...time flies. Only because no one knew that it even existed. And then it shows up! HA sent it out on tour and I got to hold it in my hands in their SF office. That was pretty exciting.
9:17
Or if you mean by surprising sales or values...not really, at least not off the top of my head. I guess of the things I've sold, the one title that caught me totally by surprise, was GOD COUNTRY. I didn't think it would sell as well as it did. At all. There was no track record for it for either Geoff Shaw or Donny Cates. But every single page sold from the first issue. And then every page for every issue after that. Not a Big Two event book. Not a "hot" creative team". An independent mini. Still blows my mind!

Morning All! I’ve never bought double page splashes because I keep all my art in portfolios and can’t think of a way to properly display/ store them. Anyone here own some and have suggestions?
Felix Lu
9:19
Only way to keep it in a portfolio is to keep it folded (assuming it's two boards taped together). Very difficult to properly display. I just had some custom mylars/boards made to fit Paul Pope's 19"X24" art. This works for regular DPSs (17"X22"). But I have yet to find a portfolio big enough to store them.

@Felix Just wanted to say thanks for all you do! Just got my DWJ daredevil commission and loved it! Can’t wait for the rest to start coming in!
Felix Lu
9:20
Thanks Victor! DWJ
9:21
DWJ's rate has gone up with demand. But he's really putting a lot of work into them. They're crazier than ever. I will be posting his most recent efforts, including your DD, this coming week for everyone to see!

I know Rob! But only as a Sandman commission collector. Had no idea he was trying to get art from every character ever. That's nuts!!
9:22
Great collector of Sandman commissions, regardless.

Hi Felix, I'm thinking about getting a separate insurance policy for my collection. How do you value pieces that were bought years ago if you can't find any specific comps today? I paid $50 for some pieces that go for 3x that today.
Felix Lu
9:23
I use CIA, and they let YOU tell them what you think the art is worth. Your premium is based off your own valuations, so it's up to you how much you want to insure for. The more your art is "worth", the more you'll pay, so it all works for them!
James
9:23
@Rick: I'm a little dubious because it's been sitting around for a considerable amount of time. It's a breathtaking piece!
Felix Lu
9:27
@James: I've been through this before. A piece sits around a while, and so it feels like it will be there forever. So other pieces get prioritized ahead of it. There's no urgency...until it's gone.
So you have to ask yourself how you will feel if someone else pulls the trigger first. How will you feel to see it in someone else's CAF gallery. If you can live with that, then take your time. But also means you probably don't want it that badly anyway.
Rick Yankosky
9:28
@Felix Just a "Thanks!" for turning me on to the 11 o' clock comics podcast.   Has become a staple of my listening.
Felix Lu
9:28
Glad you're enjoying it! I was on the 500th episode with them and Skottie Young...it was a blast.
Pete Marino
9:29
Cut the tape and put them side by side, artists almost never use archival tape anyway, so you want to get that evil stuff away from the art.
Felix Lu
9:29
That was for David.

God Country's success was a wonderful and well deserved surprise. So happy for Donny and Geoff.
Felix Lu
9:30
Me, too. I know how hard those guys worked. GC was not an obviously commercial story. But it was the story they wanted to tell. For once, the market rewarded an authentic effort!
Matt Todd
9:31
You have mentioned several times on the podcast that a seven figure sale (public i.e. auction) is inevitable and it will have quite an impact on the market, if you were to guess/speculate what artist's work do you see breaking that barrier? Frank Miller? Jack Kirby? Neal Adams? or perhaps a more auteur artist like Robert Crumb? I realize that it comes down to the buyer and their very deep pockets but I wonder if it's going to be a mainstream/superhero piece of OA or a more independent artist's work.
Felix Lu
9:34
It could be either (mainstream superhero or independent artist). But more likely former (latter appears to almost entirely limited to Crumb). The most obvious candidates, to my mind, are early Marvel SA covers. But the very early ones are a mystery...no one's seen one. They could have been destroyed. So that leaves things like surviving Kirby Marvel covers, and Ditko ASM covers.
Also, if HULK #181 ever hit the market, that would have a clear shot, too.
James

Anyone looking for bigger portfolios check-out Bottleneck Gallery - they recently started producing 24x36 portfolios. Hope this helps some of you with bigger pieces :)
Felix Lu
9:35
There you go! That's about the size for rock/ad posters.

Does anyone here collect double page spreads, and if so, how do you store/ display them. I’ve stayed away from buying any mostly due to logistics of properly displaying in a portfolio.

@Felix Lu sorry for the patchwork post and typos.  Trying to edit in the chat window and multi-task obviously didn't work out well for me =)
