Greets, chatters! Thanks for showing up (in the Q, here during our hour, or just checking out the transcript after). Big week to come as most MLB clubs are reporting - brace yourself for the unknown injuries that will inevitably pop up upon report date. Other than that, let's get to some questions ...

Happy Monday Brent.  Keeping 3 pitchers - Hunter Brown and Schwellenbach are givens, but am scratching my head over Houck or Darvish.  Youth and projections seems to favor Houck, but Darvish just seemed on when he came back.  Any thoughts.
Brent Hershey
12:04
I'd slightly lean Darvish due to track record (esp ratio history). Both have some health-related risks; there are spots where Houck is a good fit, but you have 2 SP with ceiling already.

$10 Langaliers or $15 Greene in an AL only OBP (2 catcher league). Green's injury history worries me
Brent Hershey
12:05
Don't think I'm as worried as you on Greene, but feel like in AL-only, gotta keep that 25+ HR catcher. I'd go Langeliers.

Hi Brent,
Thanks for answering this question.

20 Team Mixed League, 5v5 with OBP & HldSv. Keepers: 12 MLB & 8 MiLB. Roster: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3OF, 5UT, 9P

I currently have a rather nice problem - 6 3B keepers amongst my 20 keepers. MLB keepers: Westburg, Vientos, Caminero and MiLB: Shaw, Mayo and Taylor.

I can find a spot for all 6 should that be necessary ove those 5 UT spots) but looking to trade 1 or 2 to upgrade my roster in other positions, SP in particular. Taylor seems to an obvious trade choice but I doubt he'll net much of a return. Who would be the next best option? I'm thinking Mayo as BAL doesn't appear to have spot/role for him.

Thanks
Peter
Brent Hershey
12:10
Yeah, I think you have the thought process correct here. I'd at least dangle Taylor, but prob more aggressively shop Mayo. If the return was big enough, might consider moving Westburg, as there's a chance Mayo has more fantasy juice than Jordan, though JM has proven it, love the profile, and right now has positional flex. But yes ... good problem to have. Good luck!

Is Tanner Bibee the best value in the top 1/3 of the SP market?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Don't know if I'd go that far (which depends a ton on format, etc), but I generally agree that via standard ADP, Bibee presents a good buying opportunity. Young, some experience, in a good system/park.

Morning Brett I can keep 11 players,between Buxton 14b, Scherzer1b , Joyce7b can keep 2 of 3 ,what do you think?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Very little to lose with a $1 Scherzer. I'd add Joyce to him; could have some bumps but he should be a nice CL2.

Hey Brent - seems some have my dilemma choosing btw Campbell and Bazzana. Saw some highlights of KC and his swing seemed long to me compared to Bazz. Since you have much greater experience in prospecting, would you say my statement is a) wrong…b) true but very little to worry about…or c) something that may give him trouble in the bigs and more risky than what Bazz presents?
Brent Hershey
12:19
Probably lean to B — partially from all the success he had last year moving quickly up the ladder. If the swing length was a concern, he would have likely been reflected at AA or AAA. Now of course MLB pitchers are better, so he has to prove it here ... but I have him rated over Bazzana partially due to track record. Both solid choices, though.

In a standard 12-team head to head points league. Victor Robles or Bryon Buxton?
Brent Hershey
12:21
Probably Buxton, but depends a large part on your definition of "standard" scoring.

Hi Brent: Long time BHQ subsciber here just wondering when my pre-order Forecaster & Minor League book will be shipped. Thanks for these Chats!
Brent Hershey
12:21
Yes, we've had some delivery hiccups with the books this year that are/were a bit beyond our control. That said, you should have received the Forecaster by now if you pre-ordered. Reach out to support@baseballhq.com and we'll clear that up. Just head from the printer that the MLBAs are starting to ship today. Appreciate your patience; we're looking to rectify this issue for next year.

Brent, what's your gut feeling on Romano's elbow this season, and would Kerkering be your #2 guy?
Brent Hershey
12:24
This is purely anecdotal, but PHI has been able to keep pitchers relatively healthy during their recent run. That gives me a smidge of confidence re: Romano's health. The other issue here is Thomson, who has rarely been a one-CL guy. That could change with elite Romano ... but in either case, yes, Kekering is lined up to play a big role in that back end and should see some saves for sure.

Brent! Can you give a us a few NL names to consider at auction that might actually be sleepers? I see some interesting unknowns slated for 2b on some teams. I'm wondering if you have a few gems for us for any positions at all!
And, one more, will the Padres trade a player to the Cubs so O Caissie can be their LF guy? a Joe/Heyward platoon can't be their answer - can it?
Brent Hershey
12:29
Beano! These open-enders are tough, especially when you're talking "sleepers", as that definition changes from fantasy manager to fantasy manager. But since you mentioned 2B, I like Nick Gonzales, Nick Yorke (who could end up w OF elig) and Thomas Sagasse.
As far as SD LF ... this platoon could be it. Their $ problems and owner squabbles make it uncertain enough that I'm not going to assume any big moves, even with Preller there. Could happen, but I can't expect it right now.

Gonna give rough ranges, since I value our paid subscribers (subscription plans here), but roughly ..
  • 20ish: Joyce, Bautista (though Félix is being overdrafted IMO)
  • 15ish: Erceg, Slaten, Berroa
  • single-digits: Uceta

Happy Monday, Brent.  Who are your favorite ratio boosting relievers in a Saves + Holds league?  Kekering (mentioned above) is one.
Brent Hershey
12:36
Uceta, Uribe, Seranthony, Kahnle, Ferrer, pick any Dodgers RP

mornin' Brett, longtime sub here with BIG request. Our league is a daily but with wkly Faab buys processed ovevrnight Sunday. You have thought out loud about about a 2nd weekly chat. That would be great in terms of being "fresh food" for this fabb situation, which is curently a week old by then.
Can you update where this may go?
Brent Hershey

Still under consideration, but hearing this is helpful. I'd like to do a quick survey for this group to fill out on this issue ... hopefully can have that next week.

Hi Brent,
I have play in a 12-team 8x8 redraft league where we score W, L, QS, IP, ERA, K/9, WHIP, and SOLDs. We have a small bench (5 players) and we start 3 SP, 2P and 3 SP or RP slots (wildcard).
This year we are moving from daily pickups (i.e. streaming) to weekly FAAB. Given that one can no longer stream pitchers in and out, I think I will need invest in durable SP (LIMA plan++) and high inning relievers who can boost ratios and vulture wins.
Who do you recommend as (i) an underrated SP and (ii) stud high inning relievers?
Brent Hershey
12:42
(i) Jesus Luzardo, Ryan Pepiot
(ii) Clay Holmes, if he counts. Adrian Morejon?

HI Brent, will Mick Abel ever amount to anything.I keep thinking this will be the year.or should i dump him from my minor league team in a dynasty league and look for someone else.We get 7 players in our minors
Brent Hershey
12:43
Look elsewhere. I still have a bit of hope, but his stock has fallen so much that he shouldn't be rostered in a league like yours right now.

I know James Wood is being overdrafted but is his skill set being under-drafted 12 team mixed rotos? Could easily see him outperforming Carroll at half the auction price.
Brent Hershey
12:50
Hmmm, not sure about the Carroll statement. Love Woods skills but yes there is a tendency to overdraft. Could show up big time this year ... but getting a full season under his belt will tell us a ton more.

12 team AL-only $260 cap traditional 5X5 keeper - In an only league, how do you approach keepers who are graded as top prospects but may not have a clear role at the start of the season?  I have both Coby Mayo and Kumar Rocker for reasonable salaries but I there is a scenario that they spend time in the minors, at least to start the year.  I want to compete this year so I am conflicted on whether to keep them or not.  I have decent, but not great, keeper candidates that could take their spot(s).  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:52
In an only- with a keeper context, I'd probably lean towards finding a spot. The payoff is so huge if they make it. That said, you need roster balance, and if you feel you're in it this year, Rocker at least should have some innings limitations. Might be more valuable to you as a trade chip.

Standard 12 team mixed H2H cats. Looking to ID some profit in the late SP tiers. Any reason to be excited over Herz, Ben Brown, Birdsong? Maybe even a J McCarthy resurgence if he lands in a favorable situation.
Brent Hershey
12:54
In a 12-tm, Herz is the only one of the pitchers I'd strongly consider. Feel like Brown and Birdsong types will be on the wire throughout the year. Jake McCarthy is probably a good bench OF in that format (or a #5 OF type if your positions go that deep)

15team standard 5x5
I have Yamamota at $10 this year and Shane Baz at $1. I plan on keeping both. However, I have to decide whether to extend each for next year and beyond. So next year Yamamota would be $15 and Baz at $6. What do you recommend. Extend neither, both, or one over the other?
Brent Hershey
12:58
Assuming this means you have to make that decision now (that's rough, BTW) ... I'd probably just go Baz to keep the prices reasonable. Baz could be limitied some this year innings-wise (140-150?) but if comes through, then could be looking at 175-180+ in 2026. At $6, he'd still be worth it I think. Would likely pass on Yama; just enjoy his $10 this year.

Do you see any of these older, riskier, cheaper arms having a big profit, 2024 Chris Sale-like season? Gausman, Alcantara, McClanahan, Senga
