Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Brad Johnson

Hey all, let's get started.
Michael
12:03
Who has been your biggest disappointment this year in value?
Brad Johnson
12:05
Well, the easy answer for me is Fernando Tatis. Took him in TGFBI 2nd overall. My team desperately needs his ~18 HR and ~18 SB.
Just quickly scrolling through, I'd have something like 20 more points just with a healthy Tatis.
12:06
In terms of guys who are playing, probably Joey Gallo. But this isn't exactly unexpected. He's bad most of the time then he'll hit 10 home runs in 14 days at some point and finish in the top 100 players.
12:07
I didn't end up with any Trevor Rogers or Brandon Woodruff shares, but they're easy disappointments among the pitchers.

For those looking forward to 2023 and 2024 please rank the impact of the following minor league players: Ezequiel Tovar (Col), Nick Gonzales (Pit), and Robert Hassell (SD).
Brad Johnson
12:07
Hassell's the one guy on this list I think is likely to be a high-impact fantasy player.
12:08
He's going to do a little bit of everything.
12:09
I'm inherently mistrustful of anyone in the Rockies org.
12:10
Tovar could be an interesting batting average play on that huge field. Lot of swing-and-miss though for a so-called contact-only prospect.
I think he's probably a utility guy. Longenhagen tossed a Nicky Lopez comp on him.
12:11
I've always been more pessimistic than most about Gonzales. He has a lot to improve upon before he's more than a poor man's Dansby Swanson.

LAD @ SFG.  Bottom of eighth, none out, bases loaded.  Checked swing strike; ball gets away and is ruled a wild pitch.  However, it apeared the ball hit the batter's foot.  Telecasting crew (Pierzynski and Karros) seemed to agree it was a hit batsman.  Dave Roberts came out to question the call, but it never went to review.  The rule clearly states that whether a pitch is a HBP is reviewable.  No review took place and the call of wild pitch was allowed.  If the pitch hit the batter on a swing ball is dead.  The run that scored ended up being a game winner.  Have never heard an explanation of this.  Did Roberts not challenge (pretty sure Dodgers had a challenge remaining)?  Did the umps misinterpret the rule?
This isn't strictly a fantasy question, but it did affect points, so I'm throwing this out there to see if anyone has any idea about what happened.
Brad Johnson
12:13
I didn't see this one so anyone have anything to add?
12:14
From what you describe, it should be a dead ball. If the umps didn't put on the headphones, then it wasn't challenged.
That goes for the umpire-initiated review too.

SP dilemma this week since Cueto pitched yesterday instead of starting today at DET.  I need to start one of: Cueto @HOU; Ashby @NYM; Houser @NYM & @CIN; Lauer @CIN.
Brad Johnson
12:15
I'd do Lauer with the double-start from Houser my second choice. If you know you need volume more than quality, go with Houser.

If we believe the conspiracy theory that MLB is juicing the balls in the NY stadiums to boost interest in the Yankees and Mets, does that mean we should also consider the likelihood that secondary players like Carpenter will be power sources as well as guys like Judge?
Brad Johnson
12:16
Ha! This is a new one to me. Honestly, everyone is way overrating MLB's organizational skills.
If the NY teams happen to have juicier baseballs than most, it's a logistics fluke.
More likely, this is another effect of the humidors. Or nothing at all!
12:17
Remember, we expected the humidors to increase home runs in humid locations. NYC in June-August certainly qualifies.
12:18
Should see similar effects in Philly and DC. We already saw this play out in Boston (where we got the theory from in the first place)

What do you think of Mitch Keller going forward? He seems to have picked up a pretty good slider to go along with his fastball and looked pretty good against Detroit last time out.
Brad Johnson
12:19
Detroit has a bottom 3 offense so I'll want to see more than one good outing. He held his own against LAD too, albeit with 5 BBs.
I still think he's extremely obviously a reliever.
12:20
The Pirates would be better off sticking him in the pen and using any ol' soft-tossing southpaw for the same 5.25 ERA.

N.L. only, saves and holds. My starting pitching staff has been pretty beat up - Mahle, Megill, Cabrera picked up on fab, Clevinger dl, Woodruff dl, Peralta dl, Lodolo dl, Dustin May dl. Was hoping to see Max Meyer brought up late May but he went to the dl. The quality of starters on the dl is pretty slim so I’ve grabbed relievers to try to get some saves and holds. I’ll hold Bednar and Kimbrel but could you help me rate the following to drop as my starters start to come off the dl? Scott - Mia, Dominguez - Phil, A Diaz - Cin, Rainey - Wash, and Bender - Mia currently on the dl. Thanks
Brad Johnson
12:21
Rainey's probably the priority since he's "safe" as the closer for now.
I think Seranthony is pretty close to saves on a good team.
12:23
I don't have much preference between the others. I don't see Scott or Diaz as plausible closers long-term, though Scott might grab more near-term saves as the Marlins fiddle with their bullpen. Bender has closer stuff but seems to choke under pressure? I hesitate to ascribe failures to lack of mental toughness, but Bender's established quite the pattern of dominating in lower-leverage situations
The Reds aren't a bid holds team either, so I probably keep Scott then decide between Bender/Diaz as the first cut
12:24
Maybe just keep the healthy guy
Michael
12:24
When you look at trends for streaming, do you prefer 14 or 30 day looks, or something else?
Brad Johnson
12:25
I don't actually use trends very often. A few hitters have earned a "streaky" label like Gallo, Duvall, Odor.
With pitchers, if their velocity is normal and they aren't walking the world, I don't care what they did the last few outings.
12:26
Sometimes, I'll use trends in DFS if I perceive the marketplace is skewing towards a projections-based approach. But that's pretty rare. It's still very common in DFS for folks to only use hot players.
