Hi everyone. Links to all the prospect stuff can be found at fangraphs/com/prospects so let's get started. This will be my new chat time for a while since it doesn't conflict with minor league spring training.

I’m going to go to Giants minor league spring training games next weekend, at their facility. Any advice on where to sit or any other pro-tips? Also when does BP happen? 1.5 hrs before game? Thank you Eric!
Eric A Longenhagen
12:03
My advice is to not go to the Giants facility for their minor league spring games. It's not a viewer-friendly place to watch games for you or I, I'm just staying away. Go to their road games.

You guys listed Josiah Gray and Michael Grove as potential top 100 guys on next year’s list. What’s the biggest thing you guys are looking for from each/both of them this year that would move them up?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:04
Gray would be development of a third impact pitch, Grove is a blind dart throw based on LA's track record with injured college arms.

Did you read Ben's piece on the old Reds scouting reports? If so, how different do you think current scouting infrastructures look now than they did 20 years ago?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:05
I have not read all of it but you can imagine how different everything is now than 20 years ago, not 'everything scouting' but 'everything societal'.

I'm in a league that will have the following players available in our draft:  Rutschman, Vaughn, Abrams, Witt, Juan Pablo Martinez, Victor Victor, Marco Luciano.  What would be your top 5?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:06
the Cubans would be my last two of that group

Rumor is the next wave of baseball rule changes will implement trampolines, whiffle balls, and ghost runners.  Thoughts?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:07
It's 'Wiffle' and I'm all for it, because I'd be rosterable.

You've been really critical of ASU's program in the past, but they're obviously on fire so far (albeit in nonconference), and guys like Tork and Bishop have actualized their tools in-game. Do you think they've done anything differently this year as a program, or is this just a stroke of luck that sometimes happens with talented players?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:08
I think they have a talented lineup and I hope everyone stays healthy on the pitching side. Very interested to see how they hit against Pac12 arms

How big is the current "top tier" of the draft and who's in it? Obviously, Adley Rutschman is above everyone right now, but please consider the "top tier" to be Adley+everyone who is one step down.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:10
Maybe just Vaughn right now but we like a lot of the top of the draft: https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/2019-mlb-draft?type=0&so...

If Kyle Zimmer is actually healthy and further to keep him healthy he has to stay in the pen, then what would his FV be?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:12
maybe a 40? Hard to trust that he continues to stay healthy even if he is right now and he's also in his late-20s. If he's 92-96 with a 6 slider in relief, wouldn't you rather have a 22 yr old with that exact stuff and a better medical than Zimmer? There are a lot of those guys. Great story, I hope he shoves, but as part of the prospect coverage we have to look at him as a late-20s reliever. We 40'd Ray Black last year and his stuff is better than Zimmer's.

Who's the youngest prospect getting reps in Spring Training? I've noticed Julio Rodriguez has gotten some AB's for Seattle (and hit well). Any other 18 or younger players?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:15
18 and under? There have been about 30 players who have taken big league ST at-bats. Luis Garcia (WAS) has taken the most, Julio and Brice Turang have like 6 each.
Hakuna Machado
12:15
Aaron Eden has been pitching well for San Diego St so far, you thoughts on him as a prospect?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:16
He's interesting, looked okay against Texas Tech last Tuesday. Breaking ball command was pretty advanced, as was usage. Certainly worth following.

You have a 45/60 on Jake Bauers' hit tool right now. Is he more likely to get that 45 up to 60 in AA or MLB? Wondering if development gets stunted or accelerated if 'pushed' into MLB...
Eric A Longenhagen
12:18
Keep in mind that's from his report last offseason. Generally I think more dev happens at big league level than is talked about. Guys are rarely 'ready' from Triple-A.

Has Luis Urias always had the large leg kick? Has he made that work successfully in the minors. Watching him in spring training this year, I've been surprised at how much swing and miss is in his game for a potential 65/70 hitter.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:18
he's had it for a while but i think his utilization of it with two strikes has changed.
Captain America

What should the Phillies look for prospect wise if they were to trade some of their outfield talent?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:19
prospects nowhere near the 40-man, they should call Cleveland about last year's AZ group.
Pat G
12:19
Any backfield prospects really wow you so far?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:20
German Marquez threw on the backfields yesterday and so everyone else looked pretty lousy. Julio looks great.
Hulk
12:22
Any out-there predictions ahead of Selection Sunday for March Madness?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:23
oh that's right, forgot that's happening. Uhhh, Charlie Brown drops 40 on Davidson today and 35 on St Louis tomorrow, Hawks sneak in
Daniel L
12:23
Paddack seems to be getting a some swings and misses on his curve this spring. Do you think it looks better at all from last year?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:24
it's a little better, probably a 50 now
Gary
12:24
Has Logan Gilbert's velocity come back up? I can't find any reports on that.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:24
noted he's been in the mid-90s during sidework this spring: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-25-prospects-seattle-mariners/
Johnny Levin
12:24
Are there any prospects you'd already grade differently since their team list was published?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:24
nope
Johnny Levin
12:25
Thanks for chatting. Relief-only guys in the lower minors who rack up big strikeout numbers, like Tarik Skubal or Bennett Sousa: dime a dozen, or legit closer prospects?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:26
I think you're targeting names too early, you want the 45 FV relief guys we have on The Board
