Good morning from Tempe, everyone.
12:02
It's the last day of Extended Spring, my target game got moved to 6pm so here I am. Let's talk prospects and whatever else your heart desires for about an hour...
Buff Chick
12:02
Cubs or Brewers list first?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:02
Brewers
>this guy<
12:03
Eric are any of the prospect bonus demands starting to leak out and are those causing people to allegedly rise or slide according to #sources?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:04
Nothing beyond the handful of guys who already have very strong commits or who had bad springs. If there's one player who's the inverse of this it's FL prep SS Jonathan Vastine (Vandy) who sounds more signable than we thought a couple months ago.

Has Jake Burger's showing thus far in Charlotte changed his projections at all?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:06
I haven't seen what he looks like at second base yet but that experiment is probably too new to glean anything from anyway. I bet he plays a big league role somewhere but I don't think he's an everyday player, still.

congrats on landing the cover in ESPN's Body issue

We're recreating that Burt Reynolds centerfold
Pitching
12:07
Hi Eric, I know this is a vague question but what would you say the top 5 pitches are? Not player specific, like “Haders fastball”. I just mean like, are certain pitches just fundamentally better than others?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:08
Uhhhh, I think the pitch that carries the most water and helps pitchers outpace my expectations is the changeup, so I guess I'd say that?
Jeff
12:08
You seem to be the high one on matt mikulski changeup. Everywhere I read labels it as a work in progress, can you offer any insight as to why you give it a future 70.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:11
It finishes in consistently competitive locations and he's thrown the pitch 160 times on tape, gotten 50 whiffs. Just for context, Giolito (I just picked a guy with a great change quickly) has a 22% swinging strike rate on his changeup this year.
12:12
I know Fordham isn't facing lineups so good that you can just compare those numbers apples to apples, but getting a whiff every third time you throw a pitch is freaking good

Can Mark Vientos hit enough to make use of his power at the MLB level? He struggled to start the season at AA, but is still pretty young, and seems to be a guy who often starts slow at a level and then catches on.
Eric A Longenhagen
12:13
I think he's tracking a lot like Bobby Dalbec, which is to say I think he's a role player but not a true everyday, every inning sort.
Darren
12:14
For the draft, are teams trying to figure out which pitchers are using ‘sticky stuff’? Do they already know?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:15
I haven't heard that teams specifically care about this but all you have to do is watch the guy and you know whether or not he's using. Application of this stuff has been going on right in front of us for a very long time, I think a more interesting question is: why didn't fans who regularly watch games on TV ever notice it was going on without being told?

Yeison Santana seemed to have a lot of hype coming into this season, but he hasn’t been performing. Too soon to worry for a 20 year old in A ball or is there cause for concern?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:16
he's played 18 games. Way too early
James
12:16
I have Seth Beer in a dynasty league so I've been following his season closely wondering when the heck the DBacks are going to give him a shot. Its been a great start. K rate down a bunch. Walk rate up slightly. How likely is it that he can be a .275/.350 25-30 homer guy at the major league level?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:17
That line is too rich for me,
ElGuapo
12:17
Burl Carraway walking the yard a cause for concern? Or does reliever expectation mean it’s just a matter of things lclicking” as you picked...
Eric A Longenhagen
12:17
He's not a starting pitching prospect so this is okay. Monster stuff, 94-97 with carry and two plus breaking balls. he's going to be a darn good reliever.
Dalton
12:18
With the Rangers out of it and Josh Jung off to a great start in AA, doesn’t it make sense for the Rangers to call him up after the all star break?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:18
Maybe promote him to Triple-A post break and if he keeps hitting he's up in Sept?
Mike
12:19
Hey Eric - still hearing the rumor that Leiter is pricing himself to the Red Sox at 4? Any other Red Sox rumors you're hearing?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:19
A scout told me yesterday they've kicked around what it might take to get Mayer to fall to them, even if it means over slot. KG and I will be working the phones over the weekend and have a new mock out next week
Francis
12:19
How do you rank Marsh, Larnach and Valera long-term?
Darren
12:20
Jeison Guzman has been raking so far and played in CF some. Can he be an everyday CF?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:21
It's a great question. I have no idea how he looks out there. Saw him a bunch this year but never in CF. Believe in the bat and SS glove enough that I put him where I did on the Royals list. Hard for me to see him being a better CF defender than he is at SS (he's good) but positional versatility certainly doesn't hurt.
CBA Talks
12:21
Do you expect draft pick trading to become a thing and the subsquent creation of *SUPER* teams through trading for higher picks?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:21
I think it'll become a thing if hard slotting becomes a thing.
Mr. Manager
12:22
Michael Burrows is getting some great results in Greensboro. Way better than Quinn Priester. Has he moved into 40+ or 45 territory for you yet?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:23
I think Burrows is a reliever so the 45 FV tier is set-up man territory. Don't think I'd go that far with Burrows but if you told me he became a multi-inning guy, or someone who gets turned to in important middle inning moments I'd 40+ him. Health is a component here, too.
Darren
12:24
Pratto—what would you need to see from him to bump him to a 50FV?
Eric A Longenhagen
12:27
I think I'm just gonna hold him where he is. To be a 50 at 1B is asking a lot, I think my current report holds up.
Really curious what zips thinks of him now, tho.
