Good afternoon, let's begin
john from MA

Your thoughts on the draft specifically can the safety(ies) they drafted be expected to fill the hole at ILB?
Ed Bouchette
2:02
No, they cannot, not in the base 3-4 defense, but in the pass defense -- most likely the dime this year -- they can use 3 safeties, 3 corners and one linebacker. Or, they could even put an extra safety in the box and have no linebackers if they really want to get creative (the two OLBs would be ends in that)

Ed, I think I’m in the minority here but I like Tyler Matakavich as a starting ILB. Shazier qualities. What say you?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
He is nowhere near Shazier-like. He and Vince Williams play the same position, the buck
Matt
2:03
this is Bell’s last year in Pgh right?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
Never say never
Matt
2:03
Top 4 Safety’s next year. Davis,Burnett,Edmonds,Allen?
Ed Bouchette
2:03
Yes, that's an easy one, especially after they cut Wilcox
Jimbo
2:04
What were your thoughts when Baker went #1 overall?
Ed Bouchette
2:04
Not much. It was heavily rumored that way in the day or so leading up to it.
Matt
2:04
Top 5 CB’s next year Haden,Burns,Hilton,Sutton,Allen?
Ed Bouchette
2:04
Again, that's pretty much a no-brainer, yes

I think Landry Jones has matured into a very serviceable backup QB. I can't imagine the Steelers not wanting the insurance he brings. Do you agree with this?
Ed Bouchette
2:05
Yes, I do. Drafting Rudolph meant Dobbs is probably gone.

2:05
Martavis is gone, Eli is rehabbing and un-signed, Hunter is...meh.  Washington is #3 receiver on day 1, no?
Ed Bouchette
2:06
Top three again no-brainer: AB, JuJu, rookie
Moose
2:06
Thanks for the chat Ed. I asked you last week about the possibility of us trading MB and try to get a 4th rd pick.  Why so quick to dismiss?
Ed Bouchette
2:06
Because I never thought someone would give up a high three for him.

seems like zero contribution expected from rd 3 picks in 2018, and rd 2 pick used to replace player traded for rd 3 pick, so day 2 draft seems to be for the future, not 2018... correct?
Ed Bouchette
2:07
Martavis Bryant wasn't consistent last year, asked to be traded and was one mistake from being suspended for a year again. This kid will help now and in the future. You are correct on the QB and the OT

Is the plan really that Mason is Ben's replacement?
Ed Bouchette
2:08
He would be eligible for that, but as I wrote in the PG today, what happens if Ben plays another 3-5 years?
Ike Steelheart
2:08
I have to confess that I am a little worried. If this kid from NC State, Jaylen Samuels, plays several positions, then he will want to get paid as he worth 2 or 3 draft picks, right? Does he have the same agent than LeVeon B?
Ed Bouchette

A smart aleck after my heart

Which do you find more ridiculous: the number of mock drafts or the instant grades before the players have set foot on the field?
Ed Bouchette

It's all entertainment, the circus has come to your town

Seems we are a bit crowded in the defensive backfield. I like what I saw from Hilton. Is there a place for him?
Ed Bouchette
2:10
He will be the slot receiver until someone else shows they are better than he is.

Hi Ed - Do you think the Steelers might pursue a trade (for a 2019 draft pick maybe) for an ILB or sign someone after training camp cuts?
Ed Bouchette
2:10
There are a few still out there, Timmons and Bowman, if they feel desperate enough.
Smitty
2:11
At some point you'd expect the Browns to be good with all these first round picks.
Do yo feel they've narrowed the gap on the steelers?
Ed Bouchette
2:11
The gap was so large, it had to narrow somewhat.
Marty

If Ben plans to play another 3-4 years, I guess drafting Dobbs was a wasted pick, and will Rudolph be content to sit and wait for his time, if ever, comes?  Will they try to trade Jones ?

Hi Ed  Do you think any of the UDFA the Steelers signed have a chance to make the roster?
Ed Bouchette
2:12
one or two usually do. I think the kid from PItt has a chance to be their return man

Ed, Given the way the draft unfolded, I follow the team's response in ILBs...but am puzzling over why they'd spend a high pick on an OT that is years away from being a quality starter, if ever he can?
Ed Bouchette
2:13
They say he has a high upside. You need tackles and they really had little behind their two starters.
