Good afternoon everyone!
3:00
Admittedly a quick turnaround, but let's talk D-Backs' offseason
Tom
3:00
The D-Backs obviously need starting pitching. I know Jameson is out for next year, who do you think they will target to fill the 4th and 5th rotation slots?
Anthony Franco
3:01
Should be able to play in the middle range of free agency. Seth Lugo, Mike Clevinger, Michael Wacha, Andrew Heaney. They have the payroll space to at least entertain a run at Eduardo Rodriguez or Sonny Gray, but I wouldn't bet on them landing someone quite that good

3:01
see a pitcher for bat trade between Marlins and Arizona
Anthony Franco
3:02
Miami's pitching depth has thinned really quickly. Traded Pablo López, Sandy Alcantara TJS, Trevor Rogers had a lost season. Not sure they'd want to make another move like this
3:03
Maybe whomever they bring in to lead baseball operations -- they haven't replaced Kim Ng as GM yet -- really loves Geraldo Perdomo? Guess they could try to line something up with Perdomo and an Edward Cabrera or Braxton Garrett if they feel Lawlar's ready to take shortstop
Dude
3:03
Is extending Zac Gallen essential for this team? Kelly is mid 30's and Pfaadt (despite a great postseason) is a bit of an unknown. Or should they sign another #1 or #2 and let Gallen's years play out until free agency?
Anthony Franco
3:05
Always depends on price, of course, but reopening talks with Gallen should be under consideration. This is the last winter in which I could see a deal in the $100MM range. If he has a typical Gallen season in 2024, I imagine he's firmly out of Arizona's wheelhouse financially when he gets to free agency two years from now
Nate
3:06
As far as resigning guys like Longo and Gurriel, Jr. go… do you think they should keep those veteran presences around? Gurriel benefited the team a lot this year offensively and defensively.
Anthony Franco
3:07
I'd probably take a bigger swing at Justin Turner and keep Longoria more as a fallback option. Trying to retain Gurriel makes sense. Wouldn't want to rely on a Dominic Fletcher or Jake McCarthy to take left field and the corner outfield options beyond Gurriel are relatively uninspiring
Will B.
3:07
Will the Diamondbacks trade Sewald after last night's performance?
Anthony Franco
3:08
Can't overreact to one bad game, even if it's on the biggest stage. The bullpen's already pretty thin. Trading Sewald would be a mistake

What does an extension for Moreno look like?
Anthony Franco
3:10
Mentioned this in the post, but I think something in the $50MM range for the guarantee (which is where Keibert Ruiz landed) makes sense. Would have to be over a shorter term than Ruiz's eight-year deal with two team options since Moreno has had a much better start to his career
3:11
But he's not in that 'franchise building block, $100MM early-career extension' tier that's reserved for the Corbin Carroll types

3:11
DO you think that the diamonbacks can make it back to the world series soon?
Anthony Franco
3:12
I don't think that's crazy. The NL West will be competitive (aside from Colorado) but they should add another starter this offseason and it's possible for guys like Lawlar, Alek Thomas, Brandon Pfaadt to find more consistency than they did this year
3:14
If you simulated the 2023 season a thousand times, this version of the D-Backs probably only makes the World Series in 10-20 of them. But they were also a little ahead of schedule this year and should probably be better in '24 than they were this season, even if that doesn't guarantee another deep playoff run

Dbacks OF is still ALL left handed like last year.  Who are the best right handed hitting OF available?
Anthony Franco
3:16
Pretty slim in free agency. Teoscar Hernández is the top one, although he's probably looking at a four-year deal that gets past $60MM. Beyond him and Gurriel, there's Jorge Soler, Pham, Hunter Renfroe, Harrison Bader
Maybe Mark Canha, depending on whether the Brewers exercise an $11MM option. Robbie Grossman's a switch-hitter who's much better from the right side

How about Try Severino as starter and Candelerio at 3rd ?
Anthony Franco
3:18
I like the Candelario fit. Intrigued by pairing Severino with Brent Strom but that can't be their only rotation add. Probably have to bring someone else in via trade if they're going the rebound route in FA

The young dbacks "starters" (Jarvis, Cecconi, Henry, Nelson, Walston) are mostly going to be depth or end up in the bullpen.  Who's stuff plays up in shorter stints the best?
Anthony Franco
3:20
Most intrigued by Cecconi of that group. Still like Drey Jameson as a quality reliever if he could stay healthy, but that's obviously not a consideration until 2025
Desert Ball
3:20
Do you see the Diamondbacks making a splash in Free Agency for a pitcher such as Nola or Montgomery? Or even a bat like Chapman?
Anthony Franco
3:22
Any of those guys would require the second-largest contract in franchise history behind the Greinke deal. It's tough to project given their general payroll level
I can squint and see it with Nola or Monty more than I can with Matt Chapman. More stability with the pitchers in my view given Chapman's offensive question marks
What if?
3:23
Any chances dbacks go after ohtani? They made a ton of $$ from the playoffs. They’re 1 bat and pitcher away from winning the World Series. Could they do it? Maybe very short deal, worth a lot.
Anthony Franco
3:23
I got a few different questions on Ohtani, but no, I don't find that realistic
ScottAZ
3:24
Dbacks enjoyed good health for all their key players in 2023.  Do you think that was a key to their surprising season?  Or do you think they had enough quality depth to withstand some key position injuries?
Anthony Franco
3:26
This is a good point. They had great health from both Gallen/Kelly and most of the lineup. That was particularly pivotal on the pitching side given the lack of rotation depth
joe
3:26
Christian Walker is heading into free agency soon… Do you see a trade that could send him elsewhere or would the D-backs like to extend him for maybe a year or two?
Anthony Franco
3:28
Don't have to do either. They've got enough short-term payroll room that I doubt they trade him, since he's a pretty important lineup piece and they don't have an obvious replacement. Extension feels likelier than trade, but I'd guess they just go into his final arbitration season and figure things out from there
Duffy Scliff
3:28
Not exactly Arizona related, but who do you think will take a chance with Nick Ahmed?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Giants or Marlins could use shortstop help, White Sox maybe
I think the glove's good enough to get a big league deal but he probably moves to a utility role at this point
Tyson
3:29
Do you see one of Marte/Lawlar/Perdomo as an option to slide over to 3rd if they can't find a decent FA or trade to fill that spot?
Anthony Franco
3:31
That they kept Lawlar exclusively at shortstop when they called him up was a little surprising. Could bump him over to third more frequently if he has an offseason to get some reps there
