D1Baseball/Prep Baseball Report Draft Chat: Day One

Hey all -- I will be joined by David Seifert, Shooter Hunt and Aaron Fitt, and maybe a few others.
You can feel free to ask questions. We will answer many of them. But we will also be providing A LOT of instant analysis.

Which teams recruiting class could be hurt the worst by this draft?
Shooter Hunt
5:55
Vanderbilt was at #1 for me simply because of the massive number of potential first round picks. Max Clark is a sure thing early on, and even though Thomas White, Ethan McElvain, and Alex Clemmey might wait until the back half of the first round or even later into the supplemental picks, I still anticipate them to go. SS George Lombard was the big blow for Vandy this spring as he was sensational and is likely to go in the top 30 picks, as well. Alas, there are still other talented prospects in this class that I expect to get to campus, but IF Braden Holcomb is the impact bat that Commodores' fans will want to track most closely.

How high do you think any Oklahoma player or signee goes? Including new juco (unannounced) commit Carter Frederick.
Shooter Hunt
5:56
The two that I am glued to closest are a pair of prep arms from Texas: RHP Jacob Gholston and RHP Kannon Kemp...both had strong springs with stuff that kept getting better and are only scratching the surface of their potential. Gholston, a former basketball standout, just kept getting better throughout the spring, and while he is likely more of a supplemental-2nd round guy this year, the dream of being a Top 10 pick after three years in Norman looked like an enticing possibility.

What impact is being seen from NIL as more programs are using it to their advantage? Are their HS prospects who have spoken on its impact?
Kendall Rogers
5:56
NIL certainly matters with some high school prospects, but I also think it could change the dynamic for some returning players on the fence about signing or going back to school for another season. For instance, LSU RHP Grant Taylor is one in particular that I have my eye on right now.

Related to Vandy getting hurt with their recruits getting drafted - do they try to backfill (portal, go find guys that are JUCO committed) ?
Shooter Hunt
6:09
While the casualties are definitely painful, the staff has likely been planning for them for at least a year. Getting Air Force closer, Sawyer Hawks, was a great start, and don't forget: the squad returns a fair amount of players including many highly touted frosh/sophs ready to make huge jumps/advancements.

New Jersey pulling for Kyle Teel. What do you think, Shooter?
Shooter Hunt
6:11
Outside of Skenes, Teel might have been the biggest riser of the spring. Heading into February there was certainly 1st round buzz, but he asserted himself as a bonafide top 10 pick, and his upside might be even higher than that. Huge fan.

So, the Pirates go with Paul Skenes No. 1 overall. He's the best college pitcher I've seen since Stephen Strasburg. Skenes' has an electric arm, but what has really helped him in the last year is the evolution of his secondary stuff. Hard to pass on a generational pitcher like Skenes.
6:19
@LSUbaseball goes back-to-back to begin the #MLBDraft, as Dylan Crews goes No. 2 to the @Nationals. Crews was Mr. Consistent throughout his entire #LSU career. Special, special bat + a tremendous defender as well.

You guys think Arkansas has a chance of stealing one of the 3 infielder recruits they have committed? I know a couple have been projected in 1st round. Just didn’t know if there may be a chance one slides down a round or two.
Shooter Hunt
6:22
I really wish there was a chance, but I'm just not seeing it right now. Even with Miller missing most of the spring, he was so good last summer/fall that the looks were enough and he should go in the 1st. Zanetello is in Seattle at the Draft, so it would appear likely that he is going to go tonight. Finally, Martin has soooo many fans in the scouting community because of the high upside. If you want a sliver of hope for the three, Martin would be the one.

4. The @Rangers take OF Wyatt Langford fourth overall in the #MLBDraft. Langford was phenomenal all-season long, and shined in Omaha. Massive raw power and the ceiling couldn't be much higher.

can NC State get Landen Maroudis or Chance Mako to campus?
Shooter Hunt
6:35
Those are two BIG arms that the Pack want to get to campus desperately. A dynamic 1-2 punch. Both are elite athletes who really compete. They are firmly in a mix of about 15-20 right-handers. I'd say Mako is a bit more likely to make it to campus right now. The Pirates taking Skenes at #1 likely eliminates 1 or 2 high school arms later on in the draft (due to saved money)

Do you believe the stories Crews number to sign is 10 million

How high do you think Waldrep goes

Who will draft Nolan Schanuel
DSeif
6:44
#21 to the Cardinals is my best guess.

As a TCU fan, the biggest thing I’m watching is where Kyle Carr gets drafted. Do you guys have any insight on where you’ll think he ends up?
DSeif
6:45
Likely to go mid 2nd round.
Kendall Rogers
6:46
The @Reds take @WakeBaseball  RHP Rhett Lowder No. 7 overall. Lowder had an incredible 2023 season. His fastball is explosive and the changeup/slider are lethal pitches  for the righty. Lowder was Mr. Consistent as well in 2023.

Any surprises for tonight in the 1st round? Is Ty Floyd hearing his name called in the 1st round?
DSeif
6:48
As awesome as he was at the CWS with 17 SO, I think early 2nd is his landing spot.

Chase Dollander. Any moment now?
DSeif

Yes

The top 7 have gone fairly close to what the projections were saying. When does the madness start and the draft gets flipped upside down?
DSeif
6:57
I think it gets a little crazy when the last of the best college bats have all been chosen; Shaw, Wilken and Schanuel.
Kendall Rogers
6:57
The @Rockies take @Vol_Baseball RHP Chase Dollander No. 9 overall. Dollander didn't have quite the season he wanted in 2023, but the stuff is still electric and the fastball really jumps on you. The release and such looks easy w/ Dollander.

Shooter, just saw your tweet about the A's picks. Do you think the Tigers saved enough on the Max Clark pick to be worried about their picks as well?
Shooter Hunt
6:57
Without a doubt...the Tigers were in a great spot at #3 with how close Clark/Jenkins/Langford were, so a deal seems incredibly likely. They pick again at 37 & 45..

Any chance Andrew Lindsey goes on Day 1? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
DSeif
6:58
Not dumb at all. He had an outstanding season and has excellent stuff. With that said, I think his age pushes him to Day 2. Late 3rd to 4th round is my projection.
