Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 7/23/24
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams

Hey all -- we'll get started at 3pm CT today rather than the usual 1pm slot. Tim, Anthony, Darragh and I are recording an extra-long episode of the MLBTR podcast with all four of us in advance of the deadline. That'll push today's chat back a bit. Look for that to drop on the site tomorrow morning!

In the meantime, feel free to ask questions for today's chat in advance. Plenty to talk about leading up to the deadline just one week from now! Looking forward to it!

Greetings all! Let's get underway.

When Kyle Finnegan gets traded, who is likely to close for the Nationals?
Steve Adams
3:02
Robert Garcia, I suppose? Huge K%, solid BB%, already working some leverage spots. The Nats could trade away Finnegan, Floro and Law, so they'd likely be turning save opps over to a pretty inexperienced arm one way or another.
DeJong
3:03
With all the other White Sox players talked about, is there a market for me? or packaged with another rental Sox player?
Steve Adams
3:03
Could go somewhere as a bench option or a stopgap for an injured SS, but I don't think DeJong himself is commanding much in a standalone trade.

I still can figure out this Skubal business.  Is Detroit really looking to move him?  That seems like a good way to turn away the fan base just as it is coming back.
Steve Adams
3:06
No one has ever said Detroit is "looking to move" Skubal. But every contending team would salivate over him, and most have multiple MLB-ready pieces they could send back to the Tigers in return for two-plus years of Skubal.

I think it's likelier that he stays with the Tigers, but he'd be far and away the best pitcher on the market the Tigers may as well listen to see if someone's going to offer them something like three potential regulars for Skubal.

Justin Steele isn't getting traded. But what kind of prospect package would the O's or Dodgers have to dangle to keep the conversation 2 sided?
Steve Adams
3:08
Same kind of names you'd expect in Skubal talks... Mayo, Basallo, Kjerstad, Povich etc. from the Orioles. Rushing, Ryan, De Paula etc. for the Dodgers. Maybe a struggling young starter (Bobby Miller). Steele has three seasons of club control remaining. I highly doubt he's going anywhere.

Anything on jazz? Why taking so long ?
Steve Adams
3:09
Every trade takes a long time. Teams tend not to move until the final few days. I expect him to be traded.

Is the dodgers landing Robert and Crochet a real possibility?
Steve Adams
3:09
Sure. It'd cost a ton, but they're not short on young talent and both would fill needs both this year and beyond.

Any news on Ty France? Did someone claim him?
Steve Adams
3:11
Chris Cotillo with MassLive just reported that he cleared. Not terribly surprised there, given the salary and lack of production. I was trying to check around and see if he was being assigned outright to a minor league affiliate or if he was just going to stick on the big league roster. It seems like the former (which would mean he'd reject the assignment in favor of free agency), as France was hugging teammates and stuff last night, but trying to confirm that.

What do you think Cleveland’s deadline will look like
Steve Adams
3:13
Adding a starter but not necessarily one of the high-end ones you're seeing bandied about the rumor circuit most frequently. They have such a good track record of maximizing pitcher performance. Put someone like Trevor Rogers or Reid Detmers in Cleveland and let's see how it goes. I think an acquisition along those lines is likelier than them adding Jack Flaherty/Yusei Kikuchi or something more on the nose.

Angels are only 9 games out with the best trade deadline acquisition set to comeback in Mike Trout.  Why would you trade anyone since it's a down year in the AL West and the player's you would trade won't bring back a whole lot
Steve Adams
3:17
Arte Moreno has entered the chat!

Seriously though, there's no banking on Trout to stay healthy, no depth in the rotation. Much of the lineups is former top prospects and retreads who didn't stick elsewhere (Willie Calhoun, Keston Hiura, Mickey Moniak, etc.) There's no way I can see that lineup or pitching staff being that of a contender, and the AL West might be having a "down" year, but at least two teams (Astros, Mariners) are going to push to get better.

The Angels make the same fatal mistake you're describing every year. It's a large part of the reason they're in their current predicament.
Woof. Mets put Christian Scott on the injured list with a UCL sprain :(
That is ... suboptimal.

Paddocks innings seem to be getting to him.  Can we threw him to the bullpen where he did alright and get a veteran starter?
Steve Adams
3:18
I assume that's the direction the Twins would prefer to go, yes.

When do you see the MLB allowing draft picks to be traded? It’s time!
Steve Adams
3:18
Agreed. Hopefully in the next CBA

Does Bellinger get traded?
Steve Adams
3:19
Even if he were healthy, the two opt-outs on the contract would scare most teams away. Trading for someone with an opt-out or player option is pure downside. They play great, they're off to free agency. They get hurt or crater, you're stuck with an extra year (two, in Bellinger's case) that the team probably doesn't want.

There's a reason most guys with opt-outs/player options don't change hands at the deadline every summer.

Is Dipoto on the hot seat if the M’s miss the playoffs?
Steve Adams
3:20
I'd be quite surprised.

Bichette headed to Cleveland?
Steve Adams
3:20
Bichette is on the injured list, and Jays GM Ross Atkins has downplayed the idea of trading Bichette/Vlad multiple times.
3:21
I still think it's possible someone overwhelms the Jays for Vlad -- he's healthy and generally hitting well since a slow start -- but Bichette is hurt and was performing poorly at the time he went on the IL. Hard to extract a meaningful return in that scenario and even harder to sell low on a player of that caliber.
Cubs
3:22
Read a rumor that Cubs are Red Sox deal where Red Sox get Taillon + insert prospect for Teal I think that Cubs would do this in a minute. What prospect would this take? It use feels light on the Red Sox side.
Steve Adams
3:23
That's not really what the report said. Bruce Levine with 670 The Score said the two sides have talked about Taillon and then pointed out that the Cubs want better production from catcher and the Red Sox have a top catching prospect in Kyle Teel.

I don't think there's any way Teel is on the table in talks for Taillon, though.
3:24
Honestly if the Cubs could just get someone to take the final 2.5 years of Taillon and give up a mid-range prospect, that'd be a fine move for them. It shouldn't take Kyle Teel or anyone of his ilk to make that trade happen. Shedding the $18MM/year on Taillon's contract has plenty of value in and of itself.

Is Rooker or miller getting traded by Oakland?
Steve Adams
3:26
Rooker has the much better chance of the two to go. I wouldn't call either a lock, but Rooker's the best bat on the market probably, and he'll be 30 and into arbitration this offseason, so his value's going to begin declining much sooner than that of Miller.

Bryce Miller for Urias, Norby, and Stowers
Steve Adams
3:26
I'm sure the Orioles would do that, yes. I doubt the Mariners would.
