Steve Adams

Greetings! Sorry for the delayed start
Busy day of news here! Let's get underway
Dave
1:05
Are Bubba Chandler and Thomas Harrington good enough to come up mid season if Jones isn’t healthy?
Steve Adams
1:06
I think they're both good enough to break camp in the rotation. That won't happen, though, and after Skenes won ROY even after they held him down last year, I'm skeptical they'll bring Chandler, in particular, up before the summer.
Rangers
1:06
Surprised Evan Carter was optioned to AAA is it because of injuries last year?
Steve Adams
1:07
He also just had a brutal spring. He hasn't looked right since that magic debut late in 2023, so makes sense to get him regular at-bats in Triple-A to get back on track. I would imagine with a big start to the season in Round Rock, he can be up before too long.

I know you guys are lower in Garrett Mitchell than us Brewers Fans, but I just finished this season in The Show and he hit .282 with 5.7 war. So take that.
Steve Adams

Noted.

Hypothetically, if Trout was made available for trade and the Giants were willing to absorb most of his remaining deal, could he be had for a modest return (i.e. no Eldridge) ?
Steve Adams
1:09
Trout won't be made available, and the Giants wouldn't take on the majority of his contract (nor would another club -- nor would the Angels want to pay one of the best in franchise history to go play for another club).

In this fantasy scenario, sure, I can see them getting Trout without giving up Eldridge, especially if they're eating $200MM+ of the contract, but again ... it's not happening.

Why is it taking so long for a Jared Jones update? Season ending?
Steve Adams
1:10
I have no idea, honestly. This is one of the longer delays between "potentially serious injury scare" and "here's what's going on" from a team that I can remember
Jeff
1:11
Would AZ have traded Montgomery knowing his arm was unhealthy?
Steve Adams
1:12
Medical review stage would've uncovered the ligament issue, in all likelihood. Sounds like he really just felt significant pain in the arm for the first time in his most recent start but that doesn't mean there wasn't prior damage to some extent.

Any chance Bazzana breaks camp ? Kid is workhorse and superb hitter.
Steve Adams
1:13
He hasn't even played above A-ball yet, but I think he could debut this summer.
David Villar
1:13
Do you see any future for him? People speak highly of him in the comments section of his dfa article but to me he seems like a guy with not enough power to make up for his strikeouts
Steve Adams
1:14
Tons of strikeouts, middling production in the upper minors the past couple seasons. Maybe some team claims him, but I'm not particularly bullish.

Help make sense of the Trevino extension. Merely locking up a solid #2 C or more to it?
Steve Adams
1:15
They guaranteed him slightly less than Higashioka got in free agency. Plus defender, nice backup to have... I don't think there's anything more at play than "we like this player and want to keep him," no.
Preller Jr
1:16
Are you surprised padres chose backups that either are too old (Gurriel); can’t hit (Maldonado); or pricey (Iglesias) when they had cheaper younger players who looked ready to step up?
Steve Adams
1:18
I am perennially surprised by Martin Maldonado continuing to garner roster spots but have long since just accepted that teams love his defense and game-planning/calling so much that they're willing to overlook maybe the lightest bat in MLB.

The others, I don't find all that surprising. I imagine Eguy Rosario will draw interest and be traded elsewhere.

Is ranger suarez supposed to miss a lot of time? If so, think Painter gets called up due to Walker sucking
Steve Adams
1:20
From yesterday's post on Suarez to the IL:

"President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski tells the Phillies beat that Suarez could potentially pitch in the majors sometime in April if he continues his current progression with no setbacks."
He's not supposed to be out long and I think they'll be more cautious with building Painter up so he can help out later in the year.

Does Lux bounce around the diamond or does he settle in to a spot.
Steve Adams
1:21
Reds sound like they're going to play him at 3B, 2B and LF
Jason
1:21
At what point do the Yankees realize that they overvalue their prospects and hang on to them way too long, causing their market value to crash. The rest of the MLB teams have obviously figured that out.
Steve Adams
1:23
I mean, all teams do this to an extent. The Yankees have had some high-profile cases, of course, but it's not unique to them. I would like to see them -- and teams in general -- be more willing to part with quality prospects. The Mariners and Padres make things more fun when they're just lobbing top prospects around the league
Defense wins Championships
1:23
Jeff Mathis and Martin Maldonado need to be studied by all fringe minor league catchers. Just be the absolute best defensive and likable player at the catching position and you can play for 15 years

It sounds like Cam Smith is going to break camp, and maybe even be the starting RF on opening day. Do you think the Astros are rushing him?
Steve Adams
1:26
If he breaks camp as the everyday RF, yeah, I'd be worried they're going too aggressive on a kid who has 134 professional PAs, only 20 of which came above A-ball
Well, plus 43 this spring
1:28
Awesome spring showing, of course, but he's learning a new position and has no upper-minors experience of which to speak.

The Astros probably should've just done something to actually address the glaring OF need they have, but we'll see. Altuve/Smith in the corners would pretty emphatically underscore the manner in which they're just kind of winging it out there since Jim Crane is oddly reluctant to incur even minor CBT penalties.

1:28
If the Twins fall completely out of contention, do you think they will entertain offers on Byron Buxton and/or Pablo Lopez, assuming they are both healthy and playing reasonably well?
Steve Adams
1:29
I don't think they'll fall out of contention and don't think they'd trade either regardless. Especially Buxton, who has a full no-trade clause.
