Steve Adams
8:39
Good morning all! Happy Hall of Fame day. We'll get started at 1pm CT, but feel free to begin asking questions sooner!
1:02
Greetings all -- sorry to get started a couple mins late
Let's get underway!
Dave Dombrowski
1:02
What's left on my offseason to do list?
Steve Adams
1:03
Phillies still want to add a RH bat to their outfield mix. Adam Duvall, Robbie Grossman, Tommy Pham, Randal Grichuk all seem like reasonable fits to me
Andruw Jones
1:03
I know my career fell off a cliff quickly, but I still hit over 400 HR and am regarded as the best defensive center fielder of all time. How does a guy like Ozzie Smith get in so quickly, but I can't?
Steve Adams
1:04
Anticipating lots of HOF questions today, so I won't touch on every single guy who's mentioned -- but yeah, Jones is a Hall of Famer for me, and it's wild that he started at like 7-8% of the votes on his first ballot. I know it was a stacked ballot back then, but he was so, so good.
Curious George
1:05
Hey Steve! If someone took on Cronenworth could they get HS Kim?
Steve Adams
1:06
"Taking" Cronenworth would mean taking an $80MM contract, plus Kim's $8MM salary. I don't think any team out there, no matter how bullish they are on Kim, thinks he's worth $88MM for one year haha. Of course there's potential of a Cronenworth rebound -- I actually like him to rebound to a decent extent -- but paying the full freight on Cronenworth to get Kim would still be a nonstarter for any potential trade partner.
If the Padres could somehow convince a team to do it, they'd be hard-pressed not to -- PR hit or not.

1:07
Still a good chance Blue Jays get Bellinger?
Steve Adams
1:08
Jays are among the more plausible fits to me. Cubs obviously can't be ruled out, and Boras has pulled more than a few "mystery" teams out of his hat for top free agents.
Please explain
1:08
What is the purpose of Chapman in Pittsburgh?  A set-up is of little value unless the rotation gets you there.
Steve Adams
1:09
He makes the bullpen better. The Pirates are trying to make their team better. They can still add to the rotation. Good on them for spending a little bit.

1:10
could snell resign with the padres?
Steve Adams
1:10
Given the lengths to which they've gone to cut back on payroll, I'd be pretty shocked
Mike
1:10
What teams would be a good fit for Trevor baur could the A’s maybe get him on a cheap deal?
Steve Adams
1:11
Time for the weekly installment of "No one signed Bauer last year, and I don't think anyone will this year."

Could the A's do it? Sure. Any team probably *could*. Doesn't mean any of them want to. Last offseason showed pretty clearly that none of them did.

Would the Cubs be willing to part with Wesneski for Burleson? Seems like a fair deal to me
Steve Adams
1:15
I don't think Burleson is going to net a big-league ready SP like that when most teams are going to view him as a defensive liability. Wesneski's stock is down a bit after all the home runs he gave up in '23, but the K/BB profile is still solid. I'd prefer him (and I often gravitate toward hitting prospects over pitching prospects, given the risk)
Ptbnl
1:15
I know competitive balance picks can only be traded during the regular season, but is there anything that would prevent a team from doing an off-season trade involving a ptbnl, then acquiring said pick once the season starts?
Steve Adams
1:19
The D-backs and Braves pretty much did this exact thing in 2015. They made two trades -- one before Opening Day and the other immediately after -- that were basically related and saw the Braves take on a bunch of money (Trevor Cahill, specifically). I just went back through our archives trying to dredge up the specifics but I don't want to take up too much time on it in this setting.

At any rate, it's not common practice but it's also difficult to strictly enforce.
Jays fan
1:20
Any rumours on Eddie Rosario? Thoughts on him as a Jays DH?
Steve Adams
1:20
I think the Jays should be aiming much higher
CPT OBV
1:20
Wander never steps foot in the MLB again, right?
Steve Adams
1:20
I'd be surprised
Adam Stevens
1:21
Pirates seem like a logical fit for Cease: want to improve their team, need an arm, 2 years of control. Why don’t we hear more about that?
Steve Adams
1:23
Presumably because they find the asking price too high. White Sox GM Chris Getz said nearly the whole league has contacted him about Cease at some point. The Pirates haven't been shy at all about their desire to add pitching. But the White Sox have a steep asking price and have reportedly often asked a lot about controllable pitching, which the Bucs don't have in abundance right now (hence your original question)

Aroldis getting the best of all worlds? A nice pay date for set up work and a pretty high chance will be in playoff race in some form come July
Steve Adams
1:24
Worked for him last year
Wander Franco
1:24
Is Tampa Bay still paying Wander Franco? If he can't come back to the US to play, what happens to his contract?
Steve Adams
1:24
He'd be on the restricted list and wouldn't be paid.
Curious
1:25
Which player will you be most surprised to see NOT get traded this off-season?
Steve Adams
1:25
Still think Cease goes eventually. And I think the Twins will trade at least one of Jorge Polanco/Max Kepler
Tyler Anderson
1:26
Can the Angels salary dump Anderson to the Rockies or Pirates?
Steve Adams
1:28
Anderson didn't get claimed on outright waivers when the Angels ran him through this August, so probably not at full price, no. But the Rockies desperately need arms, so if the Angels took back some money or ate some of the contract, I can see that. Bill Schmidt, Colorado's current GM, was the Rockies' scouting director when COL drafted Anderson.
Let's Make a Deal
1:28
Luis Robert Jr. to the Giants for Whisenhunt, McCray, Conforto and Bart.
Steve Adams
1:29
The first name Chris Getz would ask for would be Kyle Harrison. The package you laid out there isn't close. Robert for four years and $67MM should command a Soto-to-Padres style trade package, and that's not it.
Walter
1:30
If Cleveland is out playoff hunt by trade deadline do all 3 Bieber, Clase, and J Naylor get dealt?
Steve Adams
1:31
Bieber yes. Naylor would have a decent chance but a high asking price. Clase is signed for five more years and is quite affordable. I know his name's already been out there, so I'm not saying it's impossible or anything, but the trade package would have to be pretty substantial.
